On the sad anniversary of King Curtis' death
Aug 14, 1971......33 years ago......his was a
talent that was truly genuine. Do anyone here

It's easy to overlook King Curtis' musical ability because many people consider him to "only" be a sideman or session player. I guess he did so much outstanding session work for so many different artists that it's easy to make the assumption that all he ever did was play on other people's sessions. He really had some serious chops and he was an great musician in his own right.

I like the work he did on Aretha's "Spirit in The Dark" live LP. Aretha's version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" comes to mind as one of my favorite King Curtis selections.

Didn't he also do a considerable amount of writing/producing/arranging as well?

The first time I ever saw King Curtis, he was a
featured soloist in the Alan Freed Big Band at
the Brooklyn Paramount. It was Labor Day weekend, 1958, and my first experience at a
real live rock'n'roll show. The last time I ever
saw King was at the Wonder Gardens club in
Atlantic City--King Curtis & the Kingpins--and
"Memphis Soul Stew" was high on the charts.
His death in August, 1971 was tragic. Stevie Wonder played and Aretha sang at his funeral.
Jerry Wexler eulogized him. King's signature sound is on those wonderful Coasters singles. They called it Yakkety-Sax.

Hey STU:

Happy 46th Anniversary to that show you saw...this would be the weekend for that!

Also you know the Brooklyn Paramount is now 'Long Island University', Brooklyn campus? The stage is still there and some other materials that the school saved.

My Favorite KC jam: 'Memphis Soul Stew'. A house hold favorite of my Mothers.

Recently found out King Curtis was responsible for bringing Donnie Hathaway to Atlantic Records and getting him a record deal. That's another aspect of his career as a mentor.
