Hi, Has anyone got any info on this 45 I recently bought off ebay , by Lee Alan with vocal accompaniment by the Vendellas, called "Set me free", it's obviously Detroit with the ZTSC#94422 on the label and stamped in the run out groove, the label reads, with proceeds going to the YMCA summer camp in cooperation with WXYZ radio, it's actually not a bad record with what sounds like a Motown backing track with the Vandellas backing the mysterious Lee Alan , I would date it around 64 .

Bunnersoul...Lee Alan was a popular deejay on WXYZ AM in the 60s, when it was a Top 40 station. It sounds like this 45 may have been a non-commercial promotional release in conjunction with some sort of fund raising effort sponsored by the station. 1964 would be a pretty accurate guess as to its release, since that's around the time of Lee Alan's biggest popularity.

BTW, If I'm not mistaken, I think he is still around and I beleive he has even visited this site in the recent past.

Gary, Thanks for the info , that explains why Lee Alan was such a bad singer, he sort of talks his way through the record a bit like "monster mash", would also like to know if the Vendellas on the record are Martha's group with a spelling mistake. I'll try and post an image of the record on the site and also post a message for Lee himself to get in touch.

Hi bunnersoul:
there was a discussion on this record a while back, and Lee Alan came on this forum back then and agreed with what I had mentioned with regard to this record, but I'll post them again for those who did not see it.

the song was cut at the Hitsville studio in early 1963 with Martha and The Vandellas as background singers, Marvin Gaye on piano, Stevie Wonder playing drums Lee Alan had a cold that day but got through it with his horn from Bagdad

the record was sold for the benifit of the YMCA by sending a dollar to his radio station WXYZ for it's metro Detroit area listeners only.

it's really a great early Motown sounding track.
