Hey folks! I just found this board and thought I'd update you on one of Detroit's great spinmeister legends, Fred Zalenka, or "Freddie Z".Fred broadcast THE R&B show on Detroit's WDET in the late 70's on Friday and/or Satuday nights starting at about 11:00PM and featured an incredible array of local and national R&B, mainly from the 50's but some from the 60's and even the late 40's. The show was "Sounds Sweet As a Honey Bee".

Here's one fan's recollection on this site's archive which I could not bring up as search, only in Google cache: "cl-I remember Fred's show very well. It was called " Gone but not forgotten". Anyway I listened faithfully on Sat nights and I remember that the intro tune was handclappin by Red Prysock (Arthurs bro) the great swing and jump blues tenor saxophonist who I once heard John Sinclair refer to as the John Coltrane of jump blues."

Fred had been living in NYC doing the occasional live show in the East Village, doing a Weekly Swing show with old, new, jump blues, R&B, Live Doo-Wop and videos from the 40's and 50's. He was hanging out with friends such as Warren Tesoro (the Larkings) and many others. He moved back to Detroit then Ann Arbor and is coming to NYC on October 9th, 2004 to do live show with special guests. If you're near NYC check out this site:Fred's 'Mo Better Big Bash @ Parkside Lounge

We might get Fred spinnng on radio while in NYC from station you can access by internet. Will keep you updated!
