Hello SDF, today,Aug. 25th is 3rd anniversary of Aaliyah Dana Haughton's passing. This young lady was soaring pretty high. I remember when her 1st album came out in '94 and how mature her voice was at 15, I had this feeling she would be around for awhile. For 2 yrs she appeared on several movie soundtracks and made guest appearances on other artists projects. In '96 her 2nd album One In A Million took her to new heights, it was dance oriented as was the first, but more mature as she had matured. She also included ballads and had the hot producers Missy Elliott and Timberland along for the ride, to me they complimented each other. She sang at the Academy Awards, did more soundtrack work, appeared in her first movie, Romeo Must Die and the world was really taking notice. She was working on her 2nd film, Queen Of The Damned and working on her 3rd album at the same time. Never having met her, I just felt like she was just down to earth, you could tell it in the interviews and how she interacted with people. She was working hard promoting her album and herself, her animated ads for the album were airing and she had done My Diary for MTV, which chronicled her early beginnings from school plays, Star Search and everything else up to this last album, which she talked about in the diary. You got to see her playful side and her inner and outer beauty was shining. Everything was coming together for her and you could see she was just destined for greater things. The last time I saw her was Aug. 22nd on 106 & Park, a popular show on BET featuring the up and coming hip-hop artist,as well as r&b. She was there for a contest in which she was giving away a Cadillac Escalade. She was happy and upbeat as ususal. I couldn't watch the whole show, because I had to leave to go somewhere. That Saturday evening on my way home from work, I was going to go to the record store to pick up her cd, but I was tired. I decided to go on Sun. When I got home I was talking to a friend on the phone at about 8 o'clock, her uncle had just told her that Aaliyah had died in a plane crash. I was in shock! I just kept saying "no, no!" I turned to every station on tv and nothing, finally it was confirmed. I cried as I did when my grandmother passed, when Marvin Gaye passed. This couldn't be! I had just seen her on tv 3 days before! Why! Why did this happen? She was just starting to really blossom!
I don't know about the rest of you, but that hurt me big time, it still does! The following Monday, at Lake Merritt, here in Oakland as they did in many places all over the world, there was a candle light vigil. Many young people came, but their were also many mothers and fathers of all races.
This young lady touched a lot of people in the short 7yrs that we knew her. She worked hard and had really done a lot, I could only imagine how much further she could have gone. When I think of her, I smile, although it is sometimes hard, as it is when I think of my grandmother, Marvin Gaye and others we have lost personally and musically. I was bopping my head at work, while listening to her music on my headphones and singing along. RIP-Aaliyah BKA as Baby Girl.
One In A Million!
I pray that the days get a little easier for her family, friends and fans.

Hi Re Re,

It's hard to believe that it's been so long. That was one weird year all around for me, for reasons that I've discussed a few times before. I remember that a friend had just picked me up to go out. Just as we were driving off, the news of her death came across the radio. It was very shocking & put a damper on the evening.

It was very shocking to me, as I had lost my wife 2 months previously. I'll never forget her funeral. It was such a classy affair, not full of the nonsense that we see far too often these days. Her potential was limitless & for as big as she already was, she was about to become HUGE!!! What a loss for us all, especially her family.

May she always rest in peace & may God continue to bless & comfort her family, as I know that they still can't understand how she could be taken away from them so young & so tragically.

Re Re: Did everything work out with the pics? Could you e-mail me the number again, I lost everything today due to a mishap.

I have a nice 3D painting of Aaliyah as an angel, with her arms outstretched, surrounded by Marvin, Tupac, Biggie, Left Eye,Marly and more heavenly stars.

It was a wonderful gift.

It hangs on my studio wall overlooking me as I work!

Eli Philly Looks Good (Is the heading).
BTW- I like what I heard H&O! I really love the songs that they have chosen, can't wait to hear them!!!! I listened to Aol music when I came home from work on Tues. Queen Latifah has an album coming out. She's doing some covers of popular, r&b, blues & jazz I heard Calif Dreaming and it sounds really good. I also watched the video(she is in the studio singing bits of some of the songs and talking about them.
I was wondering when she was going to do the singing thing for real!! The woman can sing!!!

You know what? I completely forgot. I guess I was so busy with school that I never realized that it'd been 3 years since Aaliyah left us. She has almost 3,000 virtual letters and flowers at www.findagrave.com. You can all take a look.

Eli, about a year ago I saw the same painting that you described in a mall. It had Aaliyah, Marvin, Left Eye, Bob Marley, Selena, and a lot of other singers. Do you think that could be the same painting?

She left us way too soon. I was enthralled by this young lady and her music. Strange her record Rock The Boat was quite nice. But I also loved the song by Missy/Genuiwne and Tweet, that was dedicated to her after her passing. We truly lost an angel......she was full of life and appeared to be having the time of her life.....dam shame.

You know what Aaliyah's name means? It's actually Arabic for "The Most High Exhalted One". And Aaliyah was all of that and more.

Yes, I remember the exact moment when I found out then Aaliyah died...I was another website and someone posted it shortly before midnight on Saturday, August 25, 2001. I called the person a liar and told them that that was a horrible thing to say. But it turned out to be true...

I attended the public memorial service here in NYC at Cipriani's on 42 St. and I took my daughters with me. I even took the day off of work to go! I could not believe that I was crying. I signed the guest book that was going to be delivered to the Haughton family later that day.

I truly believe that Aaliyah would have reached phenomenal heights in this business. Each time I see Beyonce, I feel like that should be where Aaliyah is...RIP Babygirl.
