After recently grooving to "The Horse" by Cliff Nobles and Co. I discovered the numerous spin off tracks that this record spawned ! Bobby Eli .. didn't you play on this track ? What can you tell us of the session, the artist and the subsequent horse record craze ?

Hi Leo,
The guitars were Norman Harris and myself.
The drummer was Cliff (Slim) forgot his last name.
The bass was Ronnie Baker.

The session was recorded at Virtue studios on north Broad street in the "hood" near Temple University.
The engineer was Frank Virtue.

It was recorded for singer Cliff Nobels for a song called Love is alright, but a dj somewhere , possibly in san Francisco flipped it to play the backing track and the rest is history.
Sadly, its been torn down to make way for more Temple dorms.

A spin off was Fantastic Johnny C's "Hitch It To
The Horse" also on the same label.

Thanks for the great insight Bobby. Killer track !! Were you playing the backbeats or the funky part ?
FYI, the enclosed web site conflicts with your memory on who played drums on the cut.

Horse fever research from the web: !!
http://funky16corners.tripod.c om/6_horse_fever1.htm
Excerpt:
If you had your radio tuned to WHAT in Philadelphia in the summer of 1968, the chances were good that Sonny Hopson The Mighty Burner was helping you to get your groove on to The Horse. The tune, the instrumental version (and b-side) of Cliff Nobles & Co.s Love Is All Right , which was released at the end of February, languished as the flip of an excellent, but mostly ignored vocal. That was until a disc jockey in Tampa, Florida flipped the record over and made it a hit (the disc reportedly sold 10,000 copies in Tampa alone in the first week). The record became a national smash, peaking at #2 on the pop charts for three weeks in July of 1968, kept out of the #1 spot by Hugh Masekelas Grazing In The Grass. It was by far the biggest hit for Philadelphias Phil L.A. of Soul records (a solid source of soul and funk classics for many years), and provided fodder for high school and college marching bands for years."

Cheers,

Leo B

Leo,
Norman played the "funky part" and I played everything else.

As far as the drums go,let me get out my ginko biloba and I will let you know for sure, as sometime the "experts" can get the facts discombobulated!

Love that tune. Was just thinking about "The Horse" a few weeks back and how I hadn't heard it in a long time.

And lo and behold, here is a post on the song.

Anybody know what disc has that tune on it? I have to get it. And I have to get it now. I knew the Barnes and Noble gift card I got for my birthday wouldn't sit around for very long.
