I am a high school teacher in Toronto, Canada and I do whatever it takes to help 'my kids'. Many years ago, I started a program called "A Salute to Our Musical Heritage" so that students could learn about samples, song re-makes, etc. I have a bit of a challenge this school year as the youngest ones were born in 1991 and some of their parents were born in 1975. When I try to talk about old R+B and talk about The Temptations, O'Jays, etc. I now hear, "Who?"

Finally I am old and I have waited for this moment as I knew it would come.

Not trying to show off and please believe me when I say this....we have arranged telephone interviews with many big names and they have been great. I would like "my kids" to speak to others whose name is not one known in a household but s/he had a hit. Those interviews tend to be the best ones.

Can you help? I will give my e-mail TimSkinner@Rogers.Com.

Thanks!

I am not a famous R&B singer, but I would love to help out in anyway. That's what I plan to do once I get my degree. :-)

Could you just imagine a world of nothing but rap?
Sounds like the premise of a good horror flick.

We REALLY NEED to re institute music programs into the schools...or else!!!

Hi everyone!

Perhaps if certain leaders would stop approving money to build bombs & would invest those billions into our educational system, we'd be a hell of a lot better off. They give lip service about how first rate our country is, then spend third world money on teachers & educational budgets.

In New York, they've practically done away with music programs, Gym (insurance liability rates are too high), after school programs & just about every social program that we grew up with. In the computer age, many schools don't even have computers & the textbooks are so old, they still indicate that Berlin has a wall, Russia is still a viable super power & Ronald Reagan is still President. In some schools, they actually send home letters soliciting donations from poor parents.

Our educational system in in tatters, but don't worry. They'll still have money for bombs & perhaps may eventually gain control of the oil fields. And when Coporate America finishes downsizing & outsourcing American jobs, it won't matter that the kids aren't being educated porperly. There won't be many jobs left anyway!

However, all is not gloom & doom. Our children can move to India & become a customer service rep for a good old AMERICAN company like Sprint. Then they'll be able to secure a job that pays $6.50 an hour, with few benefits. Those will be the types of jobs that will be left when these clowns get finished with us.

And THEY wonder what's wrong with our kids!!!

To quote the comic strip Pogo:
"We have met the enemy & they is US"!!!

Satipe,
I give you all the credit in the world. From what I've observed, our educational system mostly sucks. I spend alot of time in Europe, where kids do learn English as a "second language." Why not the same for our kids? Why can't we teach them a second language early? That's when they would be the most receptive. Our kids are not stupid by any shape or means. Alot of them are educationally deprived-and I don't blame them for being bored!! Good for you!!

That's because the politicians talk a good game about caring about our children. Meanwhile, their actions belie their words. They always choose money & special interest groups over our kids.

Moe,

I respectfully disagree. Most of our kids are not educationally-deprived. They may be from disfunctional families or environments, but by and large, a decent education is made available to most. On average, in general...choose the term....they get less smart as they get older.

Our kids, and grownups for that matter, read less and less. We want it now and can't wait. We're less tolerant. We hate to admit we don't know things. We want to kick some ass. We don't like what we don't understand, and don't see why we should understand. We're fat and lazy.

It started long before now. How is that according to a recent poll, 54 percent of those sampled still believe that Iraq had WMDs. Those idiots didn't just fall out the sky.

Second language? PLEASE. When you look around at all of the advantages and freedoms our kids have...it's a crying shame that they perform as badly as they do.

Exceptions to the above, there are plenty...but not enough to justify being anything but exceptions.

I thank all of you for your kind words and I appreciate them but I get uncomfortable when I read some of the posts. I can God Honest Truthfully tell you that I do not post here so that you will say nice things about me; I do it because we need to help "our kids".

Lady, even if you don't have a degree, you can help kids as a piece of paper cannot say if you are good with kids as it comes from the heart - sorry for the sermon. Thanks for offering to help and I will e-mail you to accept your offer.

Bobby Eli, what you wrote is correct as the first cut backs are always music and then art. We have a music program at my school but since we are 'inner city', our parents cannot afford to buy the instruments. Our music teacher is FANTASTIC as the kids play old rusty horns, broken drums, etc. and he opens up his room at lunch to let the kids jam. Bobby, you have a name that is notable so if it is in you, start a campaign in Philly to get new instruments in schools and some people will listen. They may listen but do they hear is another question?

Juice...I hope to meet you some day. What you wrote could not say it better.

Hey Gang, all it takes is a little interest and caring and kids respect that! Back to the music topic, if you care about kids and talk about how you care about their musical heritage, it does work. We have been BLESSED by taking it a step further so that kids can talk to singers and groups who are still around upwards of 50 years later. It has only been positive for both sides as the kids feel great talking to 'famous people' and the artists feel great for being recognized.

End of my sermon.

Satipe - You are THE REAL Deal..in this world of 'profit before all else' ..you're a breath of FRESH AIR!!
Like you say "egos" don't even come into it.
Bobby/Destruction - you talk a lotta sense..ThankQ - But I KNOW the pure premise of S.O.U.L. music is "Human/Humane"..it's just a matter of time before 'the penny drops' & peeps realise THE POWER OF "THE" MUSIC; WHERE IT COMES FROM; & THE REASON WE DO THIS!!!!
I LEARN FROM WHAT YOU FEEL ...I KNOW THERE'S A REASON TO """"ALL""" OF THIS ...YOU GOTTA REMEMBER WHEN I CRY..THE """MAAAAN UPSTAIRS""" CRIES TOO!!!
EDUCATE - CELEBRATE!

Jester.

Satipe, Jester, et al

Didn't mean to get off topic or to come off so shrill and caustic. I've personally spent a lot of time helping our youth through tutoring, career education and sports....and I guess like Cosby it tees me off to see so many just piss away their opportunities.

The spirit of what I really meant to say is that, even though it's an uphill struggle, that's not a reason to quit, but to try even harder....because if that battle is lost, we all lose.

Once again my apologies and I wish you success in your endeavor.

"Back in the day", you could hear kids on the street, on the bus, train etc, singing or harmonizing, but now I always run into some mindless numbskull kids , rapping , mumbling is a better word, to themselves!
The come off as total ignorant idiots doing that.
Is that just a Philly thing , or does it happen elsewhere.
