That's a bit cryptic, Mel. Are you talking about the group's 45 on the Karen label? |

I don't rate the Karen song ("Ain't Gonna Give You Up") very highly--been hearing it a lot on a college radio show I tune in to on Fridays. I prefer their single for Impact ("That Same Old Feeling") and their first Inferno single ("A Way to Love You"). The Karen single is listed in Manship's price guide. Best, Mark |

Hi Mark. I really love that song, "Ain't Gonna Give You Up." The flip is called "Am I Losing You" - Jimmy Delphs also recorded it on Karen. I'm not sure if it's from 1971 - maybe it was released in 1970, although it sounds very 60's. |

We were debating "Ain't Gonna Give You Up" on the KTF list recently. I think the majority of folks there thought it was nothing special. To each his own, I guess... Best, Mark |

A Way To Love You ...and Gotta Give Her Love were my favorites. |

I prefer The Shades of Blue's version of "A Way To Love You" - it was only released on their Impact label LP, not as a 45. |

i've got a reel-to-reel tape of the "ain't gonna give you up" session...different parts played separately, different takes (i think), etc....haven't listened to it in years. really need to burn it onto a cd one of these days. |

Probably a dumb question, Graham, but I'll ask it anyway: is the backing track on the Volumes' version of "Am I Losing You" the same as Jimmy's version? I suspect that Ollie may have used the same backing tracks for multiple artists a la Brunswick and Scepter/Wand. Best, Mark |

Hi Mark I don't have a copy of Jimmy's version here with me, but I've just played the Volumes' one and from memory they are the same track. I guess you know Jimmy's is Karen #1550 and The Volumes' disc is #1551 (K100). |

"I like I Just Can't Help Myself", "Gotta Give Her Love", "One way Lover" best. I'd also like to find out if there were any other "Motown" Inferno recordings other than the one single "Ain't That Lovin' You", which was clearly a Motown recording. While perusing the Motown master tapes, recordings lists and acetates, I didn't see any reference to others, but I suspect they recorded more during the period Inferno was distributed by Motown (and Harry Balk had his deal with them). Any help, Ron, Graham, Davie-anybody else? |

Hi Robb That's the only Motown release I know of. Harry was actually a paid employee of the company then. I don't think he was earning much though. I agree with you on those American Arts label releases - they're great. I think they were cut in New York. |
