One of the greatest songswriters of our time is
Mr Eugene Record of the world reowned Chi-Lites.
A very underated composer, he has written some
of the greatest songs in R&B history.
Can anyone here on SD name some of his classic
compositions ???

My favorites are:

River Of Tears- Gene Chandler
Love Makes A Woman -Barbara Acklin

Peace,
Mike Boone

ChiTown checking in here, man you keeping me kinda busy these days:

Coldest days of My Life
I Touched A Dream
Let Me Be The Man My Daddy was
Give it Away

You are so accurate in recognizing Mr. Record, he often collaborated with Ms. Acklin/Carl Davis and as a producer did some wonderful work for the Chilites, Dells and Gene Chandler as well as a little known Chicago female group called C-Nario.........and the band played on........

Any work he did with Gene Chandler was alright by me...
'Love Makes a Woman' was a in hosue HARLEM classic...
But with those Chilites, he damned near slayed me.

Letter To Myself
Try My Side of Love
Hot On a Thing
For God's Sake
Homely Girl
Toby
You've Got To Be The One
Coldest Days of My Life....

I could go on Chancellor, but I think you get my groove.

Coldest Days is a superb song and production.
Yes I'm Ready and You Got Me Walking (also done by Jackie Wilson) are two other great Chi Lites tracks.
I heard Eugene is back with the group on occasions these days. Does anyone know more?
Met the group some years ago...and Gene was quiet off stage....but a great great voice. The group themselves had no ego and were very friendly.
Agree he's very underrated but at least he must still be getting good royalties for Have You seen Her and Oh Girl.

Good thread Chancellor for a most deserving artist. I notice that most people think of The Chi-Lites hits. I'm here to say that many of my favorite Eugene Record compositions are their LP cuts.

I love songs like:
Being In Love & Ain't Too Much Of Nothin' From the "A Lonely Man" LP.

Love Comes In All Sizes, Someone Else's Arms, Just Two Teenaged Kids & You Smiled The Same Old Way, from the "A Letter To Myself" LP

The Sound Of Lonely & I Lied from the "Toby" LP. By the way, they did an EXCELLENT version of "The First Time (Ever I Saw Your Face)" on this LP. Of course I love Toby & You Got To Be The One.

I Never Had It So Bad, Go Away Dream & the absolutely gorgeous Take A Trip To The Islands, from the "Half A Love" LP. On "Take A Trip", the Chi-Lites harmonies were on some other shiznit! That record has a feel that transports me to some other place. That is one great song, the reggae feel on the bridge throws me a little, but otherwise....I love it!!!

Super Mad, Round & Round & Give Me A Dream, from the "Heavenly Body" LP. Heavenly Body was a great song!

Now, I have to check the 45, but if he was involved with these recordings, they would be at the top of my list: I Love You B/W I Need You By Otis Leavill. I Love You is one of those prototypical "Windy City" mid tempo jams, that sways, swings & lopes along. Light, airy & very infectious. It took me 20 years to find this song, as I never knew the lyrics, just the melody. I actually bought this 45 on the strength on an set sale tape catalog, sent to me by Don Parkers Records & Tapes in Chicago. The B side was so good that Don obviously thought that it was the plug side. When I heard I Need You I had to buy it, I love that ballad. I played it a few times & when I finally flipped it....HEAVEN!!!

Eitherway, Eugene used to write with Otis as well & both of those songs have the Eugene Record stamp all over them. Otis even sang falsetto & sounded very much like Eugene on those songs, especially on Love Uprising. Imagine my surprise when I finally heard all of those songs that Otis sang primarily in his natural tenor. I much preffered his falsetto. I'm quite sure that Eugene had a hand in writing these two songs. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

For you Chi Lite fans check out "Try My Side of Love" that's a huge cha-cha record on the oldies dance circuit here in Philly. I kinda broke that record to the DJs about 10 years ago and it's hot! Tell me what y'all think of it, okay?

The famous non- Chi-Lites song had to be "Soulful Strut" by Holt & Young. I knew Barabra Acklin recorded the track first. Chi-Lites "Bottoms Up" is a funky jam for the 80's, and a few more I can't recall right now. I think you all SD'ers touched are all on point this time. Everyone talks alot about Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, Issac Hayes, Barry White. I'm glad some one is remembering Eugene Record for a change and deservely so. I thought Gino's solo lp on WB from 77 titled The Eugene Record was awesome.

hey Juice I was just trying to be generous, I agree with you on Being In Love, the harmonies were superb.

Mike S, they were together on a PBS show, shown in Chicago a couple of weeks ago.......it was probably taped last year........you never know the way they cut and paste, You are right about them being very caring and generous in their interviews/meet & greets after their shows. they are some down brothers and I've met them several times over the years. One time doing a performance in Chicago at the Black Womens convention I won an album of their hits by naming their first hit record,,,,,,,"You Did That To Me "they looked at me and said Dam man how old are You ?

Juice another E.R. collaborator was Lowrell Simmon, (Mellow, Mello Right On ) these guys would just tear Chicago up.....and as far as album cuts go......."Inner City Blues" was a hummer........

Kdubya: I went to a concert with my mother in 80-81 at The Auditorium. The Dells and The Ohio Players didn't show up. All original Chi-Lites Marshall, Eugene, Squirrel and Red, and at the time the guy who's singing with them now who names escapes me. The Dells and OP didn't show up. The Chi-Lites did their set and the Dells and OP's set and came back for 3 encores, that show was a 5 hr show the place was on fire and their band. The Chi's was in rare form and harmonies we're so tight, that no group then or now from their hometown and in other regions could touch em.

I know the Chi-Lites had it really rough when they we're getting started, I know when I say "rough", It may sound a bit worn & outdated, And one one had it rougher than the next person or persons. These guys did. It was rough in the beginning when they we're coming along wanting to make it.

I remember they traveled all the way from the southside on el and on the bus to the westside to manager Ruth Moore's house. They got we're quite poor and didn't have money to make it back. The Vows/Majors had to come out their pockets and give them carfare home. Wow, that had to be a long trip if anyone can imagine being from here.

The a few times they came around they and Sollie McElroy lead vocalist from The Flamingos with them. They weren't calling themselfs the Chaunteurs they we're the Chi-Liters by this time?

Your are right about The Chi-Lites being humble and downhome and excessible to their fans, unlike many artists I met and have come to know too. That's the thing was the fellas when somebody needs help or with a charity fund raiser The Chi's are always there, why?, because they never forgot where they came from in the upbringing of their roots. I think The Chi's along with Mothers Finest, Pointer Sisters and Commadores are so down to earth that it hurts, man.

DynaNaye,

I really liked the Black Flames remake of 'Are You My Woman'. The Chi-Lites were one of my top 5 fave vocal groups, and in later years I came to understand and appreciate Eugene Record's contribution both to the group and to other artists; a lot of which I've learned in this forum.

That said, my girls who are big Beyonce fans know that whenever they hear "Crazy In Love", that "the Chi-lites' are getting paid cause that's where she got that horn part from." Since I first explained that to them, they request to hear 'Are You My Woman' more than Beyonce.

Some great harmonies on a track that was issued as a single in the UK on their Bottoms Up lp - Changing for You. It even charted!

Johneflat, so true, they did have a short period where they were out Temptin the Tempts, "I like Your Lovin, Do You like mine " was a Chicago Street corner uptempo doo-doo-wop favorite, back in the day we couldn't get enough of this record and like the Tempts, Dramatics and Manhattans these guys could harmonize with the best of them....they certainly never got all the credit they deserve. Love those Chicago Gangster Suits they wear... shades of Cab Calloway...LOL... One of Chicagos Finest contributions to vocal soul.

Hey Don great story man......I caught the Chi-Lites 2 years ago at The Chicago Theater at The Soul Jam tour along with the Dramatics and after the show went to their dressing room and Marshall was estatic at the home town reception and he signed autographs and expressed how much he appreciated the fans. He's a class act. I would be remiss if I didn't mention and include The Mighty Mighty Dells, at their last show at Holiday Star Theatre I was able to meet the guys and they are as humble, graicious and wordly as any group I've ever met before, they are truly Knights of The Sound Table..........

Hello Submarine to all, Chi-Sound lovers!

I don't have post before in a threat like this, about one of my favorite soul act because i got all the vynils and almost all the CD's at home and i don't well recall who are the writers of my favorites.
Anyway, I only knows Chi-lites songs writed (or co-writed) by Eugene Record. These are my faves:

-Coldest Days Of My Life (Classical-Gregorian music!)
-I Never Had It So Bad (The same comments)
-You Got To Be The One (good mid-tempo, also ethereal)
-Stoned Out Of My Mind) (similar to the previous in tempo and feel)
-The Sound Of Lonely (fantastic chorus)
-Love Comes In All Sizes (Hey, Juice, this is the most soul-classical music blend for the strings and percussion in the last part!!)
-We Need Order (I remember this is co-writed by Quinton Joseph, the same Quinton drummer at Sigma Sound. This song is also very good with a silent hiatus and acapella chorus at the end)
-The maxi (33 RPM) Try My Side (Of Love) / Get Down With Me. I agree with Nosey, these two tracks got a strings and percussion arragements in a Salsoul-Fania All Stars blend style.

Peace & Soul Food

Now that this has turned into a Chi-Lites lovefest let me state for the record that "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to the People" got just as much play in my house as any Temptations album....and I'm a HUGE tempts fan. If you replaced 'Love Uprising' with 'Are You My Woman', I'd rank it is one of the best of all time. Matter of fact, I'm gonna do that anyway. BRING IT ON!!!!

Good afternoon all!

Mike S: Thank you for the confirmation. I put up the 45 as soon as I converted it to MP3. Thanks for saving me having to dig it up.

Chancellor: Back at 'cha!!!
Kdub & Destruction: Can you believe that there is a book that stated that The Chi-Lites records from their "Temptations" phase don't hold up well?? Well, I guess that the writer should consult with Beyonce. It sure seemed to hold up for her just fine!

CRITICS.....BAH HUMBUG!!!!!

I love that original Chi-Lites Greatest Hits album, that vinyl has a great sound. I also like their later stuff like Whole Lot of Good Good Lovin', Touch Me, Bad Motorscooter and Bottoms Up.

Chancellor & Company:
Great thread! I'm glad someone launched this regarding the great Eugene Booker Record.

Yes, he & the Chi-lites did come from humble beginnings (Eugene was a cab-driver during the early 1960s). They performed with some of the greats during their early years (including the Jackson 5 at the Regal Theater in Chicago)and headlined many of their own shows.

The songs? Several....
Give It Away
What Do I Wish For
Let Me Be The Man My Daddy Was
I Like Your Lovin' Do You Like Mine
Are You My Woman (Tell Me So)
24 Hours Of Sadness
For God's Sake Give More Power To The People
Have You Seen Her
We Are Neighbors
I Want To Pay You Back For Lovin' Me - now THAT was a great ballad....
A Letter To Myself
We Need Order (uhh, President Bush, are you listening...)
Stoned Out Of My Mind (the Chi-lites discover disco!!!)

Now, how about the ones he wrote for others...
Just Another Heartache, What Happened [To The Love We Had] (for the Artistics)
We're Not Happy (rare classic recorded by Wales Wallace on Carl Davis' Bashee label)
Love Makes A Woman, Am I The Same Girl, Be By My Side, Seven Days Of Night, A Raggedy Ride (all for the lovely Ms. Barbara Acklin)
I Love You, Love Uprising (for the late Otis Leavill - and what great tunes they are!!!)
You Got Me Walking (the Chi-lites did it first but Jackie Wilson made the song his own in 1972)

Eugene recorded a gospel album a couple years back with William "Sonny" Sanders handling the arrangements (now someone should start a thread on him!). Eugene's recent appearances with the Chi-lites on PBS were stellar.

A great composer and talent. Thanks you Michael for starting this thread.

I liked seeing Eugene Record with the Chi-Lites on that PBS special. Don't know how it appeared in the audience but it looked a little frosty from my TV.

Zebop whats up !! you are on point with that one ...seems like he was a guest star instaed of a Chi-Lite....based upon the way that he came on stage after the other Chilites were already there.....hmmmmm shades of David ruffin....anyway like I said before you can never tell the way they cut and paste their performances, but it was good to see them back together...plus he hit all the notes.....

Hey Juice my brother.....Their Temptation phase got them a lot of exposure and we know that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, The Chi-lites made a good bsuiness decision and went with what was hot, but they soon left that sound and made some of the most soulful and bittersweet recordings to ever come out of Chicago. And the critics be dammmed ...what they listen to a record for a hot minute and then dismiss it....hell if you all were anything like me you were poor and you played the hell out of those 69 cent 45's then flipped them over while you were saving up for the LP..........

Hey Kdubya! I'm doing good, can't complain. I didn't think I was crazy, IMO Eugene looked like he could of wailed on all of them LOL. J/k. I do have to say that Eugene was definately one of the best acts that night.

Lady Mystique:
What made Eugene an excellent songwriter and producer is that he was open to any and all ideas that came from anyone. It didn't matter if the person was in the music biz or not - if the idea was a good one, Eugene not only used it but he made sure the person received credit.

Sandra Drayton was a fan who brought Eugene the lyrics to the following songs - "Sally", "A Letter To Myself" and "I'll Bake Me A Man". The first two were recorded by the Chi-lites while "Bake Me A Man" was a club hit for the late Barbara Acklin.

Country radio DJ Stan McKenney gave Eugene the words to "Homely Girl" and "Go Away Dream", both hits for the Chi-lites.

While composing tunes for a Chi-lites album, Eugene hit "writer's block" on one song that was finally completed when Barbara Acklin gave him ideas for the bridge. The song was "Have You Seen Her" ("...why oh why did she have to leave and go away......").

I know I don't say this too many times, I loved the record where Eugene plays guitar and Marshall plays drums on "Say You'll Be Mine" by the vows of chicago, on Bob Lee's Big Three. Cause not many may not know this these two men are skilled musicians, and won my respect hands up.

I knew Eugene & Otis Leavill's collaborations and not many know this but Otis could write some boss tunes of his own too. I like Eugene's songwriting, more important I liked all of his collaboration with many other's that's mentioned in this thread.

Through Eugene we here in Chicago was hip and in tuned to what singer/songwriter Tony Drake was doing and also what songwriter Tony Hestor was about from writing some great and memorable tunes for The Dramatics.

I'm really back listening to JJ Jackson and JJ Barnes. I'm rediscovering the music of Jack Montgomery, Gino Washington, Silky Hargraves.
