I'm curious to know how the nicknames were given and what they mean. I'd also like to know their bith certificate names (some of these have no nicknames, but use a stage name):

For the following people, and more, that I've forgotten to list here (admittedly, there are a few non-Detroiters too:

Harold "Beans" Bowles
Wyatt "Big Boy" Shepherd
Wasn't Bobby Eaton called "Skeets" (As in Fred & Skeets)
"Cholly" Atkins (Charlie?)
Jimmy Mack
"Dusty" Wilson
Joey "King Fish"
Richard Steet (Strick)
Richard "Popcorn" Wylie
"Don Juan" Mancha
George"Ivy Jo" Hunter (was he named after Ivory Joe Hunter?)
James "The Voice" Ellis
"Shorty" Long (this one's obvious)
1963 Supremes "The Hitless Wonders"
William "Mickey" Stevenson
Barney "Duke" Browner
"Bugs" Bower
"Lefty" Bates
Is Willie Kendrick his real name? Or is it Willie Kendricks
"Winehead Willie"
Johnny Bristol (is his real name "Bristoe"?)
"Jump" Jackson
Clyde Wilson-Steve Mancha (are Don Juan and Steve related? Ha!Ha!

They're not from Detroit but I've always wanted to know how The Uzzel Brothers of The Corsairs got their nicknames; King Moe, Little Keets, and Jay Bird. Did any of the other Corsairs have nicknames?

Herman Griffin-Herman Lewis
Adrian? "Mike" Terry
Briant - Brian Holland (was "Briant" a misprint? -or is that his real name?
Where did Robert Gordy get the name Kayli from? (e.g. why did he pick THAT name for a stage name?)
Harry Balk - used Mackenzie or was it King (when with Big Top)
William "Sonny" Sanders
George"Gino" Washington
"Diamond Jim" Riley
Jimmy "Soul" Clark
Was "Tommy Good" Tom Kemp?

There are a lot more I had in mind before starting this thread, but have forgotten now. I'm sure other posters will bring them up.

I WAS MORE LOOKING FOR THE ANSWERS TO "WHY AND HOW THESE PEOPLE GOT THOSE PARTICULAR NICKNAMES". Sorry, I hit caps lock by accident.

Popcorn Wylie- for example. Did he just love to eat popcorn? Or is there a much more interesting story?

Did Don Juan Mancha run around with a lot of women at once, or did he bounce from woman to woman?

Or was he from La Mancha in Spain, and his first name was Donaldo?

Beans got his name because he was tall and skinny like a string bean.

As a side note, one of 'my kids' once asked B.B. King what the two B's stand for and he answered, "Whatever you want but make sure it is nice."

Eddie "Cornbread" Kendricks - loved cornbread and limas

I've also heard the knickname Eddie "Cool Crook" Kendricks. This is a reference to a lyric in the song "The Way You Do The Things You Do".

I had intended to list Smokey Robinson, too, of course. How did he get that nickname? Was it because he was so "hot" he was "smokin' "???

What about "Popcorn" Wylie?

Didn't the DJ's in Memphis nickname B.B. King, "The Blues Boy"? But it was a really nice line by B.B. to say "Anything, but make it nice!"

I've never met him in person, but one can tell from his demenor in public appearances, that he's the nicest of folks, and a relaxed, mellow type, with a great sense of humour.

Hi Robb, in his autobiography, Smokey Robinson explains his surname "Smokey Joe" was given to him,at age six or seven, by Claude, a friend of his father. Smokey loved cowboy movies, and at the end of one seance, Claude asked him : "How'd you like the picture, Smokey Joe ?"
Smokey liked that surname, and adopted it. Later on, he learned that Claude was ironic, because dark skinned blacks were sometimes called Smokey, but Smokey, having blond hair and blue eyes, was anything but smokey !
"I'm doing this", Claude was saying,"so you won't ever forget that you're black".

Good one, Mel. Choker Campbell was one of the names that inspired this thread, but when I finally got some of the names written, I'd forgotten which I had already written.

We read the origin of Smokey's name, now what about Choker Campbell, Popcorn Wylie, Duke Browner, Don Juan Mancha?

Yeah Don, but some of the stories about how they got the name are often very surprising. Those are the kinds of stories I want to hear about. A lot of times a minor event happened when they were kids, and the name stuck. But other times, there's an unusual story that can be very interesting.

Robb

I was looking last night at old interviews of Popcorn where I thought it was recorded how he got his name. Couldn't find the detail however but having spoken to him on a number of occasions perhaps I asked him!

Anyway I'm pretty sure it is to do with his eating habits and also his early prowess as a basketball player.

Regards Don, I interviewed him last month and although I haven't played back the tape yet it was clear from his story that he was very much the romantic type

Hence the Don Juan.

HEY SIS, I'M GREAT AND GETTING GREATER.
NO ONE ASKED HOW I BECAME SPYDER, BUT IMMA GONNA TELL IT ANYWAY.
I WAS IN THE 7TH OR 8TH GRADE WHEN THE TEACHER TOOK THE CLASS TO THE AUDITORIUM TO SEE A MOVIE ABOUT INCECTS, SPIDERS AND SO ON. WELL THE KIDS WHO GOT IN TROUBLE THAT DAY HAD TO SIT IN THE BACK OF THE AUDITORIUM, THERE WERE THREE OF US.
ABBAS BEY, VIRGINIA EZELL, AND YOURS TRULY.
WHEN THE TEACHER TURNED OFF THE LIGHTS AND BEGAIN TO SHOW THE MOVIE, I GOT DOWN ON THE FLOOR AND STARTED CRAWLING UNDER THE SEATS. MY BOY ABBAS WOULD START SAYING IN A SCARY VOICE, THE SPIDER CRAWLS, AT THIS I WOULD PUT MY HAND BETWEEN THE CRACK OF THE SEAT AND FEEL SOME UNSUSPECTING YOUNG LADY ON HER BEHIND, SHE WOULD SCREAM AND THE TEACHER WOULD TURN THE LIGHTS ON AND TRY TO FIND OUT JUST WHAT THE HELL WAS GOING ON. THIS HAPPENED 4 OR FIVE TIMES BEFORE I WAS FOUND OUT, AND I'VE BEEN SPYDER EVERY SINCE.
WHEN I SIGNED WITH MGM WE CHANGED THE SPELLING FROM SPIDER TO SPYDER

Thanks for the great story, Spyder! Many of us got our nicknames as kids and they stuck. I'm glad people don't call me "Red" any more.

I can't believe I forgot to list your name on my artists list. It was one of the nicknames that inspired this thread. But you're in good company, as I had also thought of Smokey robinson and Choker campbell, and when I got to the middle of my list on this thread, I had already forgotten whether or not I had written them down. Believe me, you were not forgotten!
