This is to salute one of Michigans' own & his tremendous performance on the upcoming PBS DISCO Special, tentative air date is sometime in October.

Mr Carl Carlton absolutely rocked the house. Carl waited nearly 5 hours to perform. Now, everyone had a looonnng day. Rehearsals in the morning, back to the hotel to eat & back to the Hall for the taping. Carl was the consummate professional & is one of the more down to earth PEOPLE that I have ever met.

When Carl hit the stage, he brought much energy & he electrified a tired crowd with his performance of Everlasting Love. As if that wasn't enough, Carl went into Bad Mama Jama & the crowd was definitely charged!!! His enthusiasm for his art & his respect & love for his fans shines through & the crowd went crazy!

Carl hasn't lost ANY of his voice, he sounds just as great today as he ever did. For sure, Carl is a man who has taken care of himself, respects his craft & gives 100% of himself. He was all over the stage & he absolutely thrilled the audience when he did a few spins & went into a split!!! Carl is A BAD PAPA JAMA & believe me Michigan, you will be proud & thoroughly enjoy his performance!

ccarl

L to R: Some guy, Carl Carlton, Al Cannon (One of the coolest guys anywhere)& Bobby Eli

Hi Re Re,

I will tell you that it was a great experience. For two days, I had the run of things. I'm not a guy who's intimidated by famous folks, nor do I intrude or fawn over them. What's so great about damn near every last one of them is that they were REAL PEOPLE. I mean, they talk about the same things that you & I do. I found that they are genuinely flattered when we simply give them a simple word of thanks.

Carl Carlton is one of the coolest people that I have ever met. The brother kicks it real & he wasn't into any star trip. The man simply loves what he does, he respects his craft & he respects himself. I've seen people with not even half of his pedigree, on some old "I'm a star" BS. If you ever meet Carl, he's down to earth & cool. It's just that simple & that's refreshing.

I found them all to be quite down to earth & once they see that you have no ulterior motives, they treat you like an old friend. I have respect & feel very warmly about almost all of them. I mean, imaging sitting in a room with Carl Carlton & Herb Fame, just talking about life in general? To sit & kick it with Anita Ward & her husband (who is her manager & a Postal Worker as well)& Seeing just how warm, friendly & appreciative she is of her fans. To sit with Carol Douglas & just kicking it. And once Carol found out that we both was from Brooklyn, we were all the way cool.

Imagine speaking & hanging out with Hazel Payne, Janice Marie Johnson & her young son & just talking like old friends? To see them smile when I mentioned a few of their LP cuts like Sayonara & Diamond Real & be genuinely flattered that you liked those songs just as much as they did, is just great. And to talk with Janices' Musical Director, the great Felton Pilate & have him break down rudiments of music, it's really an interesting thing.

Imagine talking with the First Ladies Of Chic, Luci Martin & Norma Jean Wright. I mean they're calling you by your first name & just chillin & the next day, they still know who you are & come speak with you. Can you imagine what it's like for Norma Jean to ask you about her sound & asking you to ask the Sound man a few questions?

Imagine going up to Bonnie Pointers' room & listening to a CD of some unreleased music. And let me tell you, Bonnie has some serious ballads on that CD. If & when she releases it, she's got at least 2 smoking ballads that I heard. And Bonnie is definitely the life of the party. She's about having fun & she's as real as your friend next door. She's not with any bull & she's plain straight up & doesn't play that "leave me alone, I'm a star" crap. Bonnie truly embraces the people & believe me, if you're ever around Bonnie, you ain't gonna be bored.

Imagine sitting outside & talking with St. Claire Lee of The Hues Corporation from 2-3:30 A.M. & talking music. And then finding him to be one of the most humble & professional persons that you could ever meet. As a person, he is one of the most forthcoming & accessible people that you could hope to meet. You'll later learn why even after that 1st night of rehearsal, I found him to be an even bigger person. St Claire Lee is not just an entertainer, he is a DECENT, THOUGHTFUL & COMPASSIONATE MAN. You'll discover why later.

Even Denny Terrio, whom I've joked about, is a very friendly & down to earth guy. For nas much as I've joked about him, in all seriousness, I must tell you that he genuinely appreciates the people & is a very cool guy on & off the camera.

Imagine standing & talking with Jimmy Ellis of The Trammps & to see him grin from ears to ear when people tell him how much they love his music. I'm telling that he was damn near blushing & he deflects all praise from his to his Maker. His humility & his joy for performing is just remarkable. And The Trammps, ALL of The Trammps are guys who will sit & speak with you.

To see a musical legend like Frankie Valli taking the time to explain to two young singers about singing, scales & standards was great. I mean, this is a busy LEGEND, tired from a LOOONNNNG day. Yet, he took the time to talk to a young aspiring singer & I mean, HE TOOK TIME to speak with them...two young R&B singers. None of that brush off crap, no 20 bodyguards, just Frankie, taking an interest in them. You know what, they'll never forget it either.
I'm telling you that 99.9 of the performers on that show were simply kind, friendly, accessible & just downright cool. It's so refreshing when you see that people whom you admired don't look down on you & are so damn approachable. They were asking me what I did & I just let them know that I was simply an ex DJ who has a regular job & simply enjoy their music. Then they start telling teasing me about my voice & saying that I should be on the radio, or singing bass.

I guess that what it comes down to is that if you treat them with respect & don't come off like a groupie or a hanger-on, they're cool. I talk to them like I'd talk to you & they respond to that.

I have to go to work today & I'm still wired from the experience. I do know that some of us will remain in touch & I'll continue to talk to them & act as if they're regular people. Most of them appreciate being treated that way.

I'm just glad to find that 99.9% of those folks that I met were just the nicest, down to earth people that you could hope to meet. I look forward to speaking & seeing them again! It was a great experience, I don't know what more to say.

Hey Juice;
Sounds like an exciting time!! Glad you and my buds had such a wonderful experience!!!
RE: Frankie Valli nice of him to do that and take the time to talk with the young upcoming artists just like some one did for him. Who do you think that was and who did Frankie get all that same speil from back in the 1950's? :-) You got it, when Frankie was following him around like a puppy trying to learn all he could! Yes, he got it all from Jimmy. If you ask him I'm sure he'll tell you so. Joe Pesci will tell you the same thing.
BTW, Juice,I need to know the day? What Vonnie asked you. Email me, ok.

In addition to what has been said, I'd like to give thanks to the executive producers of the My Music series, Henry J. and Susan Deluca and family, and T.J. Lubinsky and his dad Herman((Dinky) Lubinsky jr., and family for always extending to Vonnie and myself their invitation to join them as guests of theirs, and making us feel as though we are part of their extended family, and for giving us the opportunity to extend an an invitation to Juice and two more of our friends to partake of the festivities.

Good afternoon all :-)

Soul Sister: So Jimmy strikes again huh :-) I think that it's a wondeful thing when a person cares enough to reach out to help a young neophyte. So many people seem to forget what it was like to be young, hungry & struggling. During this taping, I saw so much mentoring of sorts going on & it was a wonderful thing. I left that show feeling rejuvenated. It was nothing but positive from beginning to end.

Sister D: Thank you :-) What was so special was to see all of the acts giving respect & cheering each other on. I wish that I could post a video of the rehearsal. The First Ladies Of Chic were rehearsing Good Times & Bonnie Pointer & Carol Douglas sat in the audience & sang & dance & were just having a great time. I saw no one trying to show anyone else up. It was all love, all love & it felt good to be in that environment.

Bobby: My sentiments exactly! Oh, believe me, I have a thread planned for The Lubinskys & The Delucas. As a person who was a non-industry person, as well as an absolute stranger, I can definitely give a perspective of their generosity & believe me, I will do just that :-)

I extend my thanks to you for thinking of me at such a late date. It was a little rushed trying to get everything together, but everything worked out great. I thank you for thinking of me & thanks for helping to restore some faith in music industry people. Lord knows that I wish that more "stars" could be as generous & humble as all of the people whom I met at the affair.

I have a lot of tape to edit & I want to find a way to piece together a montage of Carl Carlton & a few of his moves that rocked the house. Carl made me absolutely embarassed that I can't hit that split like he did!

THANKS CARL!! You just gave me something to shoot for :-)

I just can't tell you how good it felt to see an entire show of artists who really understand what it's all about.

Hi Juice;
Yea, thats something Jimmy always talks about in his interviews, how the generations of performers always gave good advice to newcomers in the biz but unfortuneatly you don't see much of that today.
Furthermopre you have to wonder whether some of these artists today would have even bothered to listen by the way they are living their lives. Too bad and too sad.
The important thing is you witnessed possitive goings-on, nice to hear!!
Juice, I left a suprise for you on the olden day thread in the clubhouse,:-)

Hi S.S.

Thanks for the surprise :-)

What you say is so true. It's important for people to realize that they have something to offer a person, if they'd just take the time to listen. I have an interesting story to share, but I'll just give you a small taste of it.

While waiting for the train to head out of Jersey, Vonnie & I ran into a young man whom we had seen at the show. We said hi & struck up a conversation, as anyone who recognized anyone from the show, was like an old friend. To make a long story short, it turned out that the young man had played in the string section at the show.

This young man was so inqusitive & hungry for knowledge. I'll go into his story elsewhere, but, this is a very level headed young man, who is eager to learn & eager to know the right way to go about the industry. We talked to the young man all the way back to Penn Station & it was again, rejuvenating. He felt good to hear our advice & I was flattered that he even asked.

His story is an interesting one & I hope that some of our knowledgable forumers will have some sage words of musical advice for this fine young man. I'll introduce his story later.

Hello Submarine, soulful friends!

Hi Juice and all,
I'm glad that you says Carl Carlton keeps totally his special voice. I only got one tune, "Everlasting Love" in a ABC records various artists compilation, i acquired in 1976 at 14 years-old. One of the first songs that captivated me for his fresh sound was the one by Carl. The back cover, includes a pick of Carl with a little dog, very nice.

Also, years after, in the disco i worked as barman at 18 years-old (1980) played many times a very good disco-soul song by Carl Carlton. Don't remember the title or lyrics only that contains very good female chorus and the cover was Carl in a "Fitness" style photo (as the one by "Logg" in Salsoul and many other of this era).

I read one time Carl Carlton recorded under the production of Dexter Wansel. This can be very interesting.

Best regards, friends
Peace & Soul Food

Hey Juice,
It's good to know that at least you had a goodtime. I'm just finding out that some threads slipped past me that I really didn't know about. Remember "Artist Jo Armstead" thread was something I left out. that's when alot of Chi-Town folk got hip to Carl Carlton and his work with Ms. Armstead. Actually, the group I know was hip to Carl before anyone knew about and was hip to his Houston TX based recordings. Juice by you being a DJ, wouldn't it been nice to hear Carl do "Tender Roni" a follow up to "She's A Bad Mamma Jamma".

Wow! I heard rumors for yrs that Norma Jean Wright would reunite with CHIC and never did. But what I found out from you is that Norma is back, she's one of the original vocalist I remember, Luci Martin too! I'm kinda curious did CHIC do "I Want Your Love", as far as I'm concerned I love the lp version the best to get the whole feel of the song you know, since your being a DJ on the wheels of steel. With regards to Bernard & Tony RIP, they are sadly missed and they are so.

Bonnie Pointer actually played you some tunes from her forthcoming CD, eh? Hey Juice, wasn't the tunes she played we're supposed to be done with one of her sister's? You right she's not the sob as some divas I hear mentioned about.

Well it's nice to hear that Bobby, Vonnie and Yourself had a great time. Can't wait for your post to be complete to hear more about the show.

Hey Soulful Manny!!!

Are you talking about this LP???
webcarl
The title of this LP is called "Carl Carlton" & it came out in 1981.

The main cuts on this LP are: Bad Mama Jama, Sexy Lady, Don't You Wanna Make Love, Let Me Love You 'Til The Morning Comes & my favorite Carl Carlton song ever, the gorgeous ballad This Feeling's Rated X-tra.

Hi Moe , Nosey & Don,

It sure would've been cool if you had been!
affair, as most of the artists were some of my favorites in that era, especially Chic & A Taste Of Honey. I cut my teeth as a DJ to Chic & ATaste Of Honey. As such, they'll always have a special place in my heart. I have to say this was made possible only through the late birthday/early Christmas gift of Bobby Eli, through the generosity of The Lubinsky & Deluca
families. Believe me, it was appreciated & I feel honored that Bobby thought enough of me to invite me along. Thanks again Bob!

Don: Yes, it would have been cool to hear Tenderoni, or Swing That Sexy Thang. However, I would've loved to hear him sing This Feeling's Rated X-tra. In fact, we were sitting outside, when a young lady came up & asked us whop he was. I asked her if she'd ever heard Bad Mama Jama & he sang a little of it fore her & she knew it. I told her that she needed to check out This Feeling. I asked her if she knew it & she wasn't sure, on the spot, Carl sang a few bars for her.
I shook Carl's hand & gave him thanks, as that song definitely held a special place on my tapes for the ladies, if you know what I mean. Hell, I was getting ready to pay Carl some royalties out of thanks Carl got a big laugh out of that :-)

As for The First Ladies Of Chic, they did Good Times & Le' Freak. Yes, Tony & Bernard will always be missed. I'll tell you that Raymond jones is still with them & they sound great. I will further tell you that Luci & Norma Jean were two very gracious & friendly ladies. I can't say enough about them. We talked about all of those beautiful ballads of theirs like A Warm Summer Night, Falling In love With You & At Last I Am Free. I asked Norma Jean what happened to High Society & Saturday? She just said AHHH!

As for Bonnies' CD, I'm telling you that those few cuts that I heard were smoking & I'm not one to give undue credit. I believe that Vonnie has the title of the songs & The Trammps bassist Rusty was like "Yeah!!!". Honestly, if these songs are released, you'll be hearing some great stuff. I'll try to find out the name of the songs. Bobby E or Vonnie may remember the names. If they are released, remember that I told you that they were good.

A lot of stuff that I have is actual video footage. I'm in the process of editing onto DVD.
As I'm editing it to DVD, I can save whatever frames I want as pictures. I have enough pictures to post pictures for days. I'm waiting to read Vonnies story, it is a pretty good story about a Detroit homegirl. And she is very nice & forthcoming as well.

"Manny" thanks, soulful brother Juice!

Yes, this is the cover... What good remembrances, when in the discos and, in my case working so hard, was a pleasure heard soulful disco music. The same DJ who played this one (perhaps is "Bad Mama jama" for what i can recall of lyrics, ?), played also a Gene Chandler Lp from this same period, Richard Dimples, Jermanie Jackson's Lp (he is dressed color red in the sleeve), BB & Q Band, Ray Parker & Raydio, Gene Dunlap's "Party On Me" and many other good ones of the first 80's.
Sadly, little after, practically all was machine-sound and euro-disco-"bakalao".

Thanks again, friend. Peace & Soul Food!

Hey Manny!

You know that's very true. A lot of artists were hurt by the electronic productions....too many. A lot of that music just doesn't hold up very well at all. It's almost like what they did to the Soul artist with the Disco excursions. Now, to me, Disco was great. However, once some producers began to run amuck, it hurt many artists.

Same as it ever was !

Nah Re Re,

I don't look at it that way. I look at it as a chance to have met people whom I'd admired from afar. People whose music I've played at clubs, danced to & yes, made love to. They bring back memories of a simpler time, a fun time in many of our lives. And to see the camraderie & joy that they receive from performing, is simply great.

Many of them received unfair scorn & Disco was treated like a bastard child. As such, many of them have been relegated to the sidelines & not taken seriously by the "experts", who couldn't hit a C chord on a piano if you spotted them a C-E-G. It is so heartwarming to see a sweet person like Anita Ward & Carol Douglas, basking in the applause again.

I also learned that it wasn't all peaches & cream for everyone. Mr. St. Claire Lee of The Hues Corporation, told me some very interesting stories that gave me food for thought. From talking to him & hearing his experiences & witnessing his compassion & kindness has taught me something very important. And because of his experiences, I will NEVER joke or disparage another entertainer again.

His experiences were real & painful, as was any of those artists, who were scoffed at, or joked about. They took what they were doing seriously, even if the mainstream "experts" didn't. It meant something to them & others as well. As such, their music & lives should not serve as the grist of jokes. They were & are sincere & all that they were trying to do was to give everyone a good time. That shouldn't be disparaged by anyone. They weren't trying to create War And Peace. Their music was about having fun at a time when America was in serious need of it.

We had just come out of those turbulent '60s, with Vietnam, the assassination of MLK & RFK. We had the war protests, riots, The Black Panther movement, Kent State massacre & the Attica uprising. We had a ever growing drug problem, inflation, the Watergate Scandal, Gas rationing & growing inflation, recession & unemployment.

Disco was born from all of these things. People were simply tired of all of the drama. People simply needed an escape from all of the B.S. & whether folks liked it or not, Disco fulfilled that need. In the '60s & early '70s, America was just a heavy place, with a lot of heavy problems. For about 5 or 6 hours a night, people could just escape all of these things & just dance their problems away. And regardless of the moral ramofocations of it, perhaps find a friend to spend the weekend.

People seem to neglect to put the function that Disco served into a proper perspective. There are times when you need social message songs. There are times when you need love songs. There are time that you need angry songs. However, there are times when you simply need something light & carefree. Something fun, that you just don't have to think about. That's the role that Disco served & believe me, it definitely served a purpose. That purpose is simply not given the respect that it deserves. Even a rubberband needs to be in a relaxed state at some point.

I have so many pictures & some video to go through & edit. It's gonna take a little while. However, whatever I show you here will pale in comparison to the show.

As for me, hey....I've got dreams to remember :-)

Something I had written back in may of 2003 in defense of my favorite musical style, it seems appropriate now.

Why Disco was an integral part of Soul Music in the 70s and a major influence on it Today.

Listen to TV commercials, look at ads in magazines, the retro look of the 70s is back and with it comes the soundtrack of that era. Yes, Disco has raised its self once more from under the lighted dance floor to shake its thang in our collective faces. Why is this happening, didnt we bury it in a baseball field in Chicago back in the late 70s. Doesnt the yelling of Disco Sucks by hundreds of thousands of individuals prove it deserves to die? If not that look at how it made us dress and act back in the 70s! That alone is enough to prove it should not be allowed to make a comeback.

The stigma associated with Disco started because of several different reasons; you had the Disco Sucks group white people who still had not learned to dance so they shuffled along to the Classic Rock Dance Music of the 70s lol. The shunning of the style by musical purist in the R&B/ Soul section and people who wanted to split away and delve into funk and deep soul. The true feeling of some individuals at the time goes even deeper than this where racial and sexual bigotry is implied. Finally you have the over commercialization of the Disco phenomena by the media and the Disco movement itself.

So the mindset today is Disco is mindless music that has no soul and is only a fad that is best to be shunned and forgotten. The reality is quite different though, you had some of the greatest musical minds of the time laying the groundwork for the development and marketing of this formidable musical style that to this day still influences current music.

Lets take a look at who and what was involved in this occurrence and how it has continued to play a part in the music field today:

Many individual rightly believe that Disco was developed from the Soul genre as part of the outgrowth of this musical styles internal evolution as increasingly more complex vocal and orchestration became the norm. Other influences on this process where from the Funk side of R&B and the rediscovery of harmonic vocal groups in the late 60s and early 70s. Add into this mix the evolving technology in the recording studios of the 70s and you have the groundwork for creative and innovative individuals to give birth to a whole new musical style.

With the development of R&B turning into Soul music there where several musical branches that came from the tree, one of them was funk. A good example of this process and the further developments in that procedure came best be shown by the music of James Brown. James took the complex polyrhythmic beats contained in his mix of gospel and R&B and fused them into a hybrid that was to become known as funk. Funk had a major impact on the development of Disco during the early 70s it was the counter point to souls orchestrated side. Funk gave Disco its bottom and drive while Soul gave Disco its smoothness and harmonies. Examples of definitive Funk tunes that helped usher in the Disco era are songs by James like I Got the Feelin, Give it Up, Turnit Loose and Aint it Funky Now all of these easily fit into the Funky/Disco category. You can hear in these tunes the bottom end of where Disco is going to come from. These songs grew and developed from these earlier times allowed James to created the origins of Funk. Get Up I Feel Like A Sex Machine with there fusion of R&B with its earthiness and Jazz providing the improvising and vamping elements where a song rode from one section to another with out building to a crescendo or the need of a formal chorus. This musical structure allowed James to let loose and bring the full force of his personality into the music vocally, which in turn led to the later copycatting of his informal vocals yet tightly structured improvised musical arrangements. (Yes, I know this sounds like a contradiction, but the man was one of the tightest cats to arrange and play that there ever was; yet the whole thing seemed loose and freeform when it was performed). Here is where Funk was fully formed and the beginning of the next generation of sound would begin. This was the nexus of Disco and where its funky side came from with the supporting cast of artist and innovators such as George Clinton, Sly Stone, War, Bar-Kays, Bootsy Collins, Maceo and the JBs, Fred Wesley, Marva, Whitney, Lynn Collins and others. The free for all had begun and they knew it. Music had changed from the R&B structure of the last couple of decades and was on a run that would continue at a dizzying pace up to today. As funk and soul evolved there where many contributors to the process.

The influence of Soul on the development of Disco can be measured in several places and by many artists. It is not a clearly defined as the beginning of Funk, where you can point to one song and one artist. Soul music grew out of R&B that was a driving steady tempo non-stop mixture of Jump-Blues and Gospel that developed in the late 40s. There was also an influence of Jazz and traditional Folk mixed in to give it its earthiness. The main focus of the song was on the chords and the song and the meaning it self, not on improvisation by the artist. Time marches on and the R&B of the 50s is influenced by vocalists that have a natural inclination to improvise and the musical style becomes looser and free in its structure, R&B turns into Soul. Soul music had four major geographical areas that influenced the development of the style in the states. NYC, Philadelphia, Chicago and Detroit. With these different inputs into the mix Soul music came to represent several different R&B based musical styles, that where different but where all still the same genre. Here is the point I am trying to help individuals to understand, this process did not stop in the 60s or early 70s when Disco came along it continued and still occurs today.

You can go back to as early as 1968 and hear disco if you know where to look and listen for it. The Dells tune Hallways of My Mind is an out and out Disco tune; all the classic components are there. Four/four time signature, emphasis on the downbeat but still a strong back beat and the classic Disco arrangement; intro, vocal, chorus, bridge, vocal, break, bridge, vocal, vamp. It can still hold with the best of the Disco/Philly dancers that came after it. Now do most people think of the Dells who have performed for 50 years as a group as a Disco band? The answer is NO, but they did influence the musical style known as Disco.

Soul music brought to Disco vocal interplay, orchestrated arrangements and slick production, al of which can be heard in the Dells example. As Soul music splinted into different formats in the late 60s and early 70s more and more artist incorporated the formulas being used by producers like Thom Bell, Gamble & Huff, Harris/Young & Baker, and others. Artist that where recognized as Soul performers where now singing Disco Stylistics, Blue Magic, Intruders, OJays. These artist from the Philly area where the best equipped to cross over into the Disco scene, the structure to make this new form of music was in place; artist with vocal talent, great writers, producers and musicians who where willing and able to do it. Motown on the other hand that had the machine in place was focused on the POP sound and it was not until Disco had become main stream that you see Motown having a significant push into that musical format. Just look at a list of artist that influenced Disco and its a whos who of Classic Soul performers; Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Isaac Hayes, Rufus, Whispers, Patti Labelle, Isley Brothers, Delfonics, EWF, Willie Hutch, Bunny Sigler, Teddy Pendergrass, Aretha Franklin and many more (Gee that list looks very familiar to me and you). All of these artists continued to influence and accept the Disco format as part of a natural progression of soul music during the 70s.

Now add these components together and look at how they laid the groundwork for the groups that where to follow in their footsteps. This is not to say that these are the only two influences on Disco (Soul & Funk), these are just examples. Many musical formats have been thrown into the mix over time and have had profound impact on this much-maligned musical format. Artist like Jackson Sisters, Act II, Timmy Thomas, Peoples Choice, Younghearts, Ester Phillips, Sister Sledge, Heatwave, Barry White, Love Unlimited, Slave, Boney M, Liquid Pleasure, Hokis Pokis, 4 Below Zero, Ashford & Simpson, Ecstasy Passion & Pain, Vicky Sue Robinson, Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Streetwise, Quadraphonics, Intrepids, Dooley Silverspoon, Rhetta Hughes, Modulations, Futures, the later Miracles, Ladies and their Gentleman, Liquid Gold and many others.

Yes Disco was over run when there was the rush to capitalize on its money making potential, but how is that different from how hip hop / rap scene and how it is being capitalized today. Look at the music scene today we all complain somewhat about how it was not as good as it was in the past. Yet if you take the time and look and listen you will find diamonds in the ruff. UKSJ and others are big proponents of finding the sweet sounds of today, why would we turn our collective head and not look for the same sweet sounds we claim we love from the past?????????

I know this was long, but I had a point that I felt had to me made. It is my opinion and I know that we are all welcome to our own. So if you do not agree then that is okay with me. But I have just one more question.

Why is it that DISCO is in all the commercial soundtracks you hear today?

good music comes through no mater what lable it is given!!

Juice, I meant that "Jokingly"(there's that word AGAIN)-LOL. I could only imagine the stories and education you got!!! Yes, Disco did get treated like a RED-HEADED STEPCHILD!! I remember seeing those fools on tv stomping on those records in some baseball stadium on the news!! Human beings are something else, that backlash made it rough for a lot of singers. Something like that caused a ripple effect, it is amazing how any one action or comment can effect many!!!! Those life stories you were told are definitely lessons to live by, be you famous or not!!!

Yes Re Re,

I know that you were (OOPS!!!) joking :-) That's why I love you man!! The funniest thing that came out of the Disco Sucks campaign happened at Commisky Park in Chicago. They had a big bonfire burning Disco records. These folks did such a great jobs, that they absolutely destroyed the Baseball field as well. The field was so damaged that they had to cancel the game. If memory serves me correctly, it was in between games of a Doubleheader.

HEy Bobby,

Thanks for the kind words. What you say is so true. Behind the scenes is the place to be. Thje show is great, but to watch how everyone works so hard & supports each other is a great thing. The artists supported one another & I can tell you that even the members of the audience were positive. The vibes were 99.9% positive & that's one heck of an average.

As for Tahirah, you know she's my buddy. She's very cool & deals in the truth, but doesn't feed into negativity. Very sweet girl there. And Al is simply one of the coolest people around. Al's simply cool, there's no more than I can say about Al. It was a pleasure meeting Al.

Man, I still haven't completely come down just yet. The whole experience feels like I got into a jacuzzi after a long, hot day & came out refreshed. There was just so much positivity from everyone & not a trace of drama. It really restored some of my faith in people. Thanks for the experience!!!

Yes Juicefree, I agree. Carl Carlton is one of the greats to come out of Detroit, but he's never really been given his due recognition. He has been performing since he was a kid and I remember him well on local radio and tv while growing up. He killed them on that PBS Special hosted by Lou Rawls, Mary Wilson and Aretha Franklin. Any idea of when this latest special will air?

Soulie!!!

Very true, very true. In the I Was Wrong thread, I give a few other ideas as to why I felt that Disco was very important, when considering the context of the times. I think that many have forgotten those days. It was great coming of age in the 70s. You could actually kiss someone without fear of dying. Novel concept, dont you think :-)

Hi Marv,

We posted at the same time. Bobby answered that question & I look forward to it. I'll tell you what I didn't ask him, but Carl should have a record deal with somebody. Carl has a very viable voice, The mans pipes are still correct & he's an entertainer. Carl simply gives you energy & he entertains. What more could a record company possibly want? He can bring it on the dance songs, he can sing the hell out of a ballad. Some smart producer should snap up Carl & get busy. This man could sell records if someone were smart enough to get on board.

I was listening to one of Carl's early 45s just this week - "I'll Love You Forever" on the local Lando label, from c.1964. A super nice song from "Little" Carl when he was only around 11 years old. It's great to hear he's doing so well.

The Last time I seen A Taste Of Honey was at the Funk Fest in 77-78? Later I use to see their names in the musicians credit on alot of Motown releases in the mid & late 80's. I'm glad to see the ladies are together again united for the show, wow it has been a long time. What I remember about the ladies we're the band they had backing them in the day.

Here is my attempt at re-creating part of Carls' performance. It's a small gif file, unfortunately with all of the pics necessary to create the file, I had to shrink it. Here's a test to see how it came out. Other than that, I'll have to resort to stills.

Thanks Re Re,

I just wish that it could be larger. It looks so much better at a larger size. Now, it's back to resizing pics & trying to re-create it that way.

Thanks Soul Sister,

Unfortunately, the answer is no. That tiny file is made up of 35 frames that I edited from the video that I shot. I had to squash a 998 kb file to under 50 kb. This is the result. Maybe if I cut a few frames, I might be able to inflate it a little. Other than that, my next post will be the best that I can do. I'll try a photo montage & see how it comes out :-)

Thanks S.S. & MEL!!!!! WELCOME BACK & THEN SOME :-)

Kdub: I just edited 10 & 1/2 minutes of video of A Taste Of Honey. I will be posting a thread on their part of the show as soon as I do a little Photoshopping on them. They are two of the nicest women that I've met. Very down to earth & just cool people. That was my experience being around them for two days.

JF,

Excellent work on the animated gif and the photo montage. You're tecking me out, mo.

I know you're technically competent, but I want to know if

a. You've tried reducing the quality of the pics, including reducing the number of colors to make them bigger...and
b. Have you considered the "yousendit" web site as a way of sharing your vids?

Destruction,

Thank you for the compliment. Believe it or not, I'm not that knowledgable as of yet. I'm kinda learning on the fly. I reduced the picture for the gif to 64 color & the problem is that the original number of frames used for the gif was about 35. That's quite a lot for an animated gif that has to be 50k or smaller. One day I'll figure it all out. Not bad for a beginner.

I'm not aware of the "yousendit" website. What's the deal with it?

Thanks for the help :-)

Juice,

The website is www.yousendit.com

Here's the skinny:

New to YouSendIt? Here's what you do.

Choose who you want to send a file to. It can be anyone with an email address. You can specify multiple email addresses separated by commas.

Select a file to send. You can send photos, audio, documents or anything else. Your file will be stored by YouSendIt without ever filling up your recipient's mailbox.

Click on Send. YouSendIt will automatically email your recipient a link to your file stored on our server. Your file will be deleted after seven days.

No passwords to share, no software to install, no accounts to create, and no full mailboxes. Start sending now!

JF,

Now I've seen variations on the time limit. Once it read, "5 days or 25 views". But this is the latest info.

I found this from the person, I believe it was 1Wicked who posted the Louis Johnson clip and I used it to post the Peanuts/Hey Ya vid.

What I did was to follow the instructions, then I used my email address, then pasted the link to a post in SDF.

I've got about a 700 meg file of my girls singing My Girl that I plan to edit down to about 300 meg and post there once I reload the digital vid editing software back onto my PC.

Good afternoon!!

Destruction: Thanks a lot for that info. I'll definitely check that out! I appreciate you giving me that info. Considering that I have e-mail accounts with hotmail, aol, yahoo & can set one up for my cable with optimum online, maybe one day I'll make up a page or something. I guess that I'll investigate that, as I know nothing about webpage design as of yet. I have a few books, but my time is divided elsewhere at the moment.

I don't know about you and web site design...I think once you go down that slippery slope, we'll lose you forever...wouldn't want that to happen.

But seriously, your cable company has probably already set aside web space for you and I'm sure they've got templates that you only need to fill in.
