Hello Submarine To All! Hey, Alain, You say it to me and I make it (i'm not the only "guilty", here in SDF i'm well known as a very Phillysound obssesed!, smile!) Some times i started Philly threads as "Your Top Ten PIR Favorites" that were very successful in participation... Or the good folks in SDF was comprensive with a Philly-illness as me, smile! I starts to name my favorite ten jazzy vocal and jazzy instrumental. Vocal: 01-I Need You Forever / Lou Rawls 02-Billy Boy / Billy Paul 03-My Old Flame / Billy Paul 04-A Really Hard Day / Dee Dee Sharp 05-Lover Man / Patti Labelle 06-Treasure Of my Life / Billy Paul 07-Early Morning Love / Lou Rawls 08-I'm Glad To Be Back / Jerry Butler 09-It Takes Two / Phyllis Hyman 10-Some Day You'll Be Old / Lou Rawls Instrumental: 01-Bitter Sweet / MFSB 02-Love Is The Message / MFSB 03-Ferry Avenue / MFSB 04-Thank You Miss Scott / MFSB 05-A Million Milles Of The Ground / Dexter Wansel 06-No Greater Love / Leon Huff 07-Reality / Monk Montgomery 08-Opus-de-Funk / People's Choice 09-Mikey'd's / People's Choice 10-Soncere (The Infinite Hour Glass) / Michael Pedicin Jr. Also there are some PIR tracks that includes some good swinging string and horns arrangements or some good scat vocals as Jean Carne, in fact jazz is a constant ingredient in practically all the PIR catalogue, but i name the ones that are very jazzy in structure, arrangements, etc. the whole song. Hello Submarine to all! Hey, Soul Sister, Everettinc and Handsome, Many thanks for your response. I knows all the songs your mentioned, except the one by Michael Pedicin. I only got "Soncere" in a UK PIR compilation and his PIR LP is one of my "hard to find" albums list. I likes also some solo sax by Michael in Salsoul Orchestra as in "Gettaway". I also likes "I Ain't Jivin". Perhaps I likes more "No Greater Love" because the first track i have heard so many times and the other only from three years on, when i find the album. Hello Submarine again, phillybusters! I see some of you mentioned tracks that are not in the PIR catalogue but are outside productions. If we considered also these songs, i think the "jazzy" lists can be enormous! Also grace to some of your lists i reconsidered some songs that i likes and also sounds to my ears very swinging and jazzy. I wanna to add: -O'Jays: "Mi Favorite Person", "Big Gangster", "Don't Breakin' Us Up" and, perhaps the most swinging chorus by O'Jays in the last part of "Desire Me" -Harold Melvin & The Blue Note's "Cabaret" -People's Choice: "The Big Hurt" it's simultaneously jazzy and bluesy -Bunny Sigler: "Sweeter Than The Berry" also jazzy-bluesy -Lou Rawls:"You're The One" and "Pure Imagination" -MFSB: "Zack's Fanfare", "I'm In Your Side", "Manhattan Skyline", "TLC" -The last part in Dee Dee Sharp's "O-O-Child" with very good swing male chorus (by The Tymes!) -Billy Paul: "Malorie", "When It's Your Time To Go", "I Was Married" -Jerry Butler's "Coolin' Out" -Jean Carne's "Free Love" Peace! |

Family Reunion-O'Jays Let's Make A Baby-Billy Paul These 2 songs sound like one & the same, same key, only differences are: words & slightly different music arrangements. Anyone else notice this? Handsome |

Hi, Handsome! I think that the relation betwen "Family Reunion" and "Let's Make A Baby" it's easy to see: Firsty a man and a woman decides to make a baby and subsequently, there are a family reunion (father, mother and son). Smile ! :-) Seriously, the "tempo" it's similar, but the feeling, IMHO is different. The one by Billy it's, IMHO, the typical "corny" ballad and the one by O'Jays it's very cool, specially the intro. Usualy, Billy is more jazzy (in fact, the Jazz singer of PIR for excellence), but in comparison, "Family Reunion" is more jazz-flavoured. You made me think in another two PIR tunes with very resemblance in rythm, tempo, etc.: Ebony's "Nation Time" and Lou Rawl's "Some Folks Never Lane". Peace & Soul Food! |

I'm wrong, I really refered to "I'm So Glad I'm Me" by The Ebonys wich it's identical in rythm structure to "Some Folks Never Learn". Peace! |

Hello Submarine again, jazzy-lovers! Hey, "You Are Everettinct" and Handsome, many thanks for your responses, friends. If we consider also some intro's, practically all the PIR catalogue can be considered as "jazzy". Some of my favorites: -Vibraphone intro in The Intruder's "Sad Girl" -Sax intro in Jean Carn's "Love Don't Comes Easy" -Westmontgomerian guitar intro in O'Jays "Used To Be My Girl" Peace & Soul Food (and Get Down With The Jazzy-Philly Sound) |

Hello again, Phillybusters! Hey, Alain, I'm glad for your post. It seems to me as you have the "Putpurri" album by Thad Jones & Mel Lewis. I read that includes a good cover of "For The Love Of Money". Many coincidences in tastes in your first list as the good Bunny Sigler write-produced ballad by Shirley Jones or the other by Bunny Sigler, "Dance To The Music" it's very good and some psychedelic with those whispers and scat vocals at the end. MFSB, Leon Huff and Dexter Wansel are for me not only the best fusion at PIR, but from the best fusion music in general. It's curious as many acid jazz artists have covered songs as "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" (Brand New Heavies) or "Nights Over Egypt" (Incognito). Peace & Soul Food |

Hello to all, soulful friends! Hey, Johneflat, Despite the fact "Bittersweet" is a instrumental, got a "message" of real bittersweet mellow mood!! what a masterpiece!! Hey, Wonder B, If I have the chance to finally find the Michael Pedicin PIR album...! If all the LP got the same feel of "Soncere", I really need this album. Recently I find a web-site by Michael and in the discography don't appears nothing from his Philly period (PIR and Salsoul Orchestra collaborations). Hey, Her I Am, I allways have problems betwen the spanish edition as "With Love", the UK edition as "Take Good Care Of Yourself" and the US edition as "International" 3 D album. I got the UK edition that I believe includes the song you says. Anyway, the most jazzy, IMHO, in this album is "Long Lost Lover", especially for the westmongomerian guitar by Norman Harris but also for the swinging-sexy vocals. Also the tracks "Philly Jump" and "Ain't No Reagge But Got Funky" by Instant Funk can be consider as fusion or jazz-funk. Peace! |

Hello, DyvaNaye! Your taste is very jazzy! I likes also "Treasure Of My Life", especially when the high register voice of Billy Paul it's so hard to distinguise of the alto sax, in the scat of the last part. About "My One And Only Love", Vincent Montana is plethoric as the Norman Harris guitar! Best Regards, Peace & Soul Food |
