Reading the liner notes on my C.J.&Compny compilation, I, not only see where Dennis Coffey is the producer of one of my favorite DISCO joints of the 70's, but that none other than the illustrious FUNK BROTHERS are all up in my favorite C.J. joint, We Got Our Own Thang... Dennis is playing up some hellacious pschedelic funk, and Mr Uriel Jones just needs a new drum kit after tearing holes in the one he was using on that jam... Damn, Uriel is a bad ass man, who doesn't quite get the recognition and respect he richly deserves... Dennis' riffs sound like he wants to take you completely to another stratosphere on this song, so you had to be careful not to be smokin' nothin' stronger than cigarettes when that joint is coming through your speakers!!!

My question is, after Motown left Motown, how many times did these illustrious cats get together to collaborate on a hit record like We Got Our Own Thang??? Once again, I'm not interested in no obscure rare soul stuff... Hit records with lotsa air-play is what I'm inquiring about... Also, I'd like to extend that question to include the illustrious rhythm section of MFSB... Did they play on any hit records not associated with PIR or Salsoul, and what were the names of the players and their songs...

Peace!
Isaiah

Hi Isaiah. Mike Theodore and I were using Funk Brothers Eddie Willis, Uriel Jones, and Pistol Allen on many sessions before I ever got to Motown. After Motown left we used Earl Van Dyke, and Robert White too. We also used Jack Ashford. When I lived in LA, I used Jamerson on my albums and Bongo Eddie. These guys are all great players and always did great on our sessions. I just listened to "We Got our Own Thing". It still sounds hot! That's Gary Schunk playing all that wild electronic keyboard stuff on a Moog syth. Tom Molton did the mixes at Sigma Sound in Philadelphia. We did the tracks at Pac 3 studios in Dearborn, Michigan and horns and strings at Hollywood Sound in LA.

Bobby, thanks, I feel like a fool not thinking about all that intra-label Philly music you guys did... I just tend to think the two big boys when it comes to Philly music... You guys were doing stuff with Weldon at Harthon Records before there was a Philly Internationa!!! Gots to be mo' careful..(smile!)

Dennis, thanks for the response and the info - and hell yes, We Got Our Own Thang will always sound mad HOT! Incidentally, that's why I miss the album covers, which contained so much information on the production of the album... You didn't need ya bi-focals and binoculars to make out the credits... Some of these reissue cds don't give anybody credits... It's a shame...

Peace!
Isaiah
