Hey All,

I really can't answer this question. Other than for the fact that Stevie had a handicap - and so it must have been a bit more challenging for him to be up on every level imaginable all of the time - they both were very creative and innovative.

What say you all? Which of these two artists will have made the biggest impact on musical history when it is all said and done - "Signed - Sealed & Delivered?"

SoulSister, now who do you think was the first person who popped into my head?(smile!) Yeah, J.B., that's my man...

Stevie and Marvin...GoGoGirl, I once asked this question at the old board, and it went nowhere... I am hoping that your asking the question gives a pizzaz my question lacked... For catalogue size - Steveland Morris... For public empathy and adulation, not even the blind and talented one can surpass Marvin Gay... That is just my objective thinking, as I love both of these performers...

Then again, Stevie has this outrageous pop fandom, because his music appeals to people of all stripes... I don't know if Marvin ever had that... I guess it depends on who you're asking, as there's no objective criteria for determining whose legacy is larger...

All,

Isaiah read both of their Bios on the link above. My God it is hard to decide - but I will give the slightest edge to Stevie. He is blind and he was 13 when he was "Fingertipping" - and so on - and on - and on. LOL!

You make a great point about the cross over appeal also.

I can't really choose...Marvin made somewhat autobiographical music and Stevie, especially in the beginning of the 70s, made socially conscious music, although Marvin achieved that also with WHAT'S GOING ON. Very hard for me to choose. :-)

Loved Marvin. Damn near WORSHIP Stevie. I think as an overall musician, singer, performer, poet, writer, arranger, producer, artist-- Sir Stevie would deserve my humble vote. No one of the Motown in that era *said* things as uniquely as Stevie did (does). Some may feel Smoke was a better composer of love songs, or Marvin had a more charismatic romantic delivery, but in terms sheer awe-inspiring Dizz-ZAMN! & goosebump appeal: Stevie.

One.

Hmmm, this is going to be really tough. They're both really famous, they're both musically talented, and they both recorded some of the most memorable songs. I think Marvin left the biggest legacy, and Stevie's right behind him.

it's Marvin for me....

For some reason he got through to me about the importance of things even though other artists were writing and singing about the same messeges...

The planet , love, peace,

He was a great meesenger - I heard him..

Hello Submarine To All!

I thinks we talks about two giants and both are differents.

Marvin (RIP) was the epitome of sensuality, appart from a multitalented and multiinstrumentalist musician-singer-songwriter. He writed some of the most importants pages of Soul History. Ilikes all of his Motown classics from What's Goin' On to Mercy Mercy Me. It's not "necrophilia" but, curiously, my fave album is his postum CBS LP "Dream Of A Lifetime". Here, IMHO can find the most mellow, dramatic Marvin.

About Stevie, practically i can say the same but he was a pioner in the introduction of syntesyzer sound and write some great poems. He can made Jazz, Pop, Soul. Can be introspective, mellow or joyful (Secret Life Of Plants, My Cherie Amour or Master Blaster, respectively).

They, both apporting two indispensable legacys.

Peace & Soul Food!

Tough question, because I like them both.
I prefer Marvin Gaye as a singer especially with Leon Ware and Stevie Wonder as a songwriter. Stevie's songwriting skills are equal to none and according to the Billboard one of the top 5 songwriters of all time, along with the Beatles, Elton John.

Wow this is so hard because I love them both. I agree with Alain. I love Marvin's singing. He had such a smooth sexy voice. There was something so special about Marvin. I love Stevie too. His songwriting skills are phenomenal. Just look at Stevie's music from the early to mid 70s -- "Music of My Mind", "Talking Book", "Innervisions," "Fulfillingness' First Finale," and "Songs in the Key of Life." I really can't pick one or the other. I have to go with both.

As a singer and performer I have to go with Marvin. He has songs of Social Commentary, Love Songs, sensual songs, great duets. He had a spirituality about him especially in live performances.

Stevie is a good musicaian and songwriter, although as a composer I don't rate him over Smokey. (Smokey wrote and produced for both male and female recording artists and vocal groups and is a well rounded artist)
This is a tough question. As a musician I would say Stevie. As a singer and performer I would say Marvin.

No one, not even Gerald Levert can sing "Let's Get It on" like Marvin Gaye

The Stevie Wonder persona is more identifiable and influential to today's recording artists

I have to say Stevie Wonder has the bigger legacy, although I am more of a Marvin Gaye fan.

This was not as hard as I originally thought. Both of these legendary artists were making music during my formative years. When I was a teenager through my early twenties Stevie Wonder was the man. I still bought Stevies music but somewhere along the line Marvin Gaye just became larger than life and his autobiographical musical forays provided me with an adult insight into many of lifes darker issues. We are talking about two of the most talented singers, performers and songwriters to grace the face of the planet so in closing I guess when I was young Stevie ruled, but as I got older Marvin was the man. I simply play and listen to more of Marvins material than Stevie.

Legacy : Stevie, he's still alive and probably has more genius up his sleeve.
