A "must see" concert is happening in Detroit on August 28 in Chene Park. The Funk Brothers will be backing a few of the ladies from Motown - Martha Reeves, Kim Weston, & Mary Wilson. I read somewhere that the concert will be taped for an upcomming DVD release. I know I'm up for it...who else is going? | ||

At the age of 14 I saw you on the stage of the FOX THEATER and you were just beautiful, talented and a role model for me. If one found themselves carless in Detroit, at the mercy of public transportation, might one easily attend this show & make it back to the Canadian side on some casino or tunnel bus so I don't turn into a pumpkin with no money or place to stay in Detroit? Just wandering, I'm serious contemplating jumping on a bus to Windsor which I think leaves me closer to Chene Park geographically than the Detroit bus terminal at New Centre. Any advice? | ||

Erik T - I am unfamiliar with the bus lines in Detroit. I know the Tunnel bus comes up near the Renaissance. You could probably get a room there at the Marriott. It is aways from Chene Park which is near the IHOP restaurant on Chene and Jefferson. | ||

The Funks already has Crawford in the personal. I always wonder how it would be with Reeves, Wilson & Weston. And with all my hopes, dreams, wishes and prayers seems to be a reality after all. 135$ for the bus to Windsor, I talked to 2 people who'd normally consider such a trip but no dice... I think I'd have to stay in Windsor, is this likely to sell out? The Abyssinians are coming to Toronto the same weekend, and I just might get to visit Detroit or Chicago in a few weeks, so money's gonna be tight this weekend. I really want to make this happen, how far a walk is Chene Park from the CBD? Decent 'hood(s) to pass through, camera around my neck, looking touristed-out, after the show? I find it maddening that in Detroit, Martha would not appear with the original Vandellas. We get so mad about fake groups, like the fake Marvelettes, but when the originals are still here, and still willing (I think) to sing with each other, it is apalling to not sing with them and give the fans what they want. Martha has some serious issues about this, and I am voicing my opinion, but the group was "Martha and the Vandellas" not Martha and a backing track, or Martha and her band. Martha was called out on this years ago by the Michigan Chronicle, and I saw Martha at a "Motown Party" at Second City, in what was advertised as "Martha and the Vandellas" was actually Martha, a backing track, and no Vandellas (Betty Kelly was actually there in the audience). Boos and Jeers came from the audience and she had to cut her segment of the show short. | ||

The company filming the show pulled out, and ticket sales weren't strong enough to justify going on with the show. I talked to the promoter and have a brief going in explaining it, tomorrow. If I had money invested in a ticket I wouldn't count on any rescheduling, I'd go get a refund now, at point of purchase. | ||

By all rights, this should have been a landmark event. Instead, it appears to have deteriorated into a sham. If ticket sales for this concert are as poor as the promoters say they are, then it's their (the promoters') own damn fault. I knew absolutely nothing about this event and I live here in Detroit. I found out about it via this forum. Granted, I don't read the local papers very often and I seldom watch the local TV news, so maybe the publicity was there and I missed it. Still, it seems like more promotion would have ensured better advanced ticket sales, and the need to cancel what should have been a great show could have possibly been avoided. | ||

Hi Sue...I'm really not THAT hard to reach LOL. I watch TV constantly, day and night, I just don't watch the local news very often. If there had been TV commercials on local TV promoting the show, it's for sure I would have seen them. As for the papers, I subscribe to the Free Press. I usually scan the major stories, but I usually only "read" the sports section, the editorial page and do the crossword puzzle. It may sound hard to beleive, but I'm really not a hermit, nor am I a media-basher; in fact one of my "closest personal friends" is an on-air personality at Channel 7. I read/watch what interests me, and that's about it. The History Channel, PBS, TV Land, ESPN, Discovery, and Comedy Central are my favorites. | ||

It takes a really smart, hard-working manager to get press, radio, TV etc. all excited and on board about a show ...tickets don't just sell themselves. Somebody has to be working the phones, working the media. Especially in a case like this where there isn't a big budget -- or any at all -- for ads. | ||

There's obviously a lot more involved in getting a project such as this one off the ground than I realize, so your comments on the subject are well received. I gotta say that there was terrible promotion for this concert. I live in Detroit and I also found out about it from this forum. I read the papers and listen to the radio all the time and there was nothing that I heard. It was not on wdet or in either of the enetertainment rags. Chene park is terrible at promotion in general. Its a shame but once again things boiled down to money. | ||

Well, in today's touring market, acts can't rely on the venue to do enough publicity. Band managers have to hustle, have to speed dial people at each newspaper and weekly, have to chat up deejays -- everything. We all might love these acts, but it isn't a slam-dunk to book them and sell tickets. It takes careful marketing, a lot of groundwork before the concert date. | ||

Martha, Roz, Annette and Lois have been blessed in that they are one of the few groups to have their original line-up intact. When I see Martha and the Vandellas, I want the original Vandellas (Lois too) not Vandellas Martha just happens to have. Why Not? This is Detroit, this is where Motown was, and if the original Vandellas are around the corner, why not use them? The group is not Queen Martha and Her-Ladies-In-Waiting, it is Martha and the Vandellas. | ||

Shawn; I love Martha, Annette, Roz, and Lois equally! Together, they formed the most agressive women's group from the sixties. They can't be catagorized as a girl's group, a girl's group would not be able to sing "Dancing In The Streets" or "Nowhere to Run". As I stated, the Vandellas have been highly blessed by God, the original group is still here after 42 years, I would use all of my originals until we just couldn't do it anymore! | ||

Can anyone say KARMA!!!! I realize that everyone loves Martha & at least Shawn keeps it real. Shawn is honest enough to state that Martha's the one. However, I feel that they acheived success as a group & as long as there are original members alive who are willing to sing, it should be a must. The promoter said the DVD production crew dropped out. That's the "issue." They need to get a new DVD production crew in place, in order to make money since ticket sales were slow. | ||
