This for those of you SDer's in NY or who use to reside here, Chuck Leonard, the first black deejay on WABC-AM pop radio, died yesterday afternoon after a long battle with cancer. He was in his 60's. Rest in peace, Chuck and thanks for those wonderful radio memories. Peaceful Journey, Chuck Mike Boone (Chancellor of Soul) chancellorofsoul.com |

While we're in the bad news department, I saw an obit today for California DJ legend Hunter Hancock, who died 8/4/04 at the age of 88. RIP to both |

Julia Child died yesterday, too. She was only three days away from her 92nd birthday. You can tell she lived a long life. Anyone who lives after 90, famous or not, you can tell they lived a long life. |

wasn't Chuck Leonard with Kiss WRKS at one point? I clearly remember his slow pace very powerful "voice" as it was used on many recordings and commercials. He had a way to introduce records that made you like them. Another icon in the radio DJ world. Condoleances to his family Rest in peace. |

Yes Dyva they are. Chuck was indeed a pioneer in breaking down doors in pop radio for black people. I remember when he first came to WRKS-KISS FM here in NY, during the early 80's. I was extremely happy to hear him back on radio. He had a cool style in his voice that I loved so much. He's definely going to miss........ May Chuck Leonard rest in peace!! It was so funny, due to his affiliation with WABC, I had always assumed that he was a White DJ. I was about 5 & with radio being the aural medium that it is, I'd never seen him. I assumed that since the playlist was predominately Pop, that he was White. The infinite wisdom of kids, huh??? Imagine my surprise some 20 years later when I found out that he was Black!!! I was shocked & proud. He had the perfect DJ voice, smooth as silk. God rest his soul, as another icon leaves us too soon! |

Chuck Leonard was indeed a legend in NYC radio. I had the honor of meeting him in 1990 when I moved to New York City. He was at the time working at WBLS-FM doing the afternoon shift. Chuck was a true gentleman and spent a great part of the afternoon answering my questions regarding the radio market in NYC (I was seeking employment in NYC radio at the time). He then showed me photos of his wife (a blonde knockout) and then-infant son (who is probably a teenager by now). Chuck Leonard was DJ'ing at WWRL-AM in the mid 1960s when WABC's Dan Ingram heard his show and recommended Chuck to his boss Rick Sklar (WABC-AM'S Program Director). Sklar hired Leonard after hearing Chuck's WWRL show. Cousin Bruce Morrow said in his autobiography that Chuck Leonard was THE disc jockey he would listen to whenever he was on the air. Rest in peace, Chuck. It was an honor knowing you. Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Hi everyone. Chuck was a great DJ and nice guy. He flew into Detroit in the seventies to attend my wedding reception. It is sad to hear of his passing. RIP Chuck. |
