My good friend, Malcolm Baunmgart, phoned lastnight to say that the new Bettye Swann cd, which includes all of ther Capitol material, is finally going to be released here in the UK on Monday 16th August on the Honest John label. Its release date has been out back a couple of times but it seems that the long wait is over. It will complement the cd of Money material very well. Now will someone get their finger out and release her Atlantic songs please?

Sorry I don't know the URL but there's a great review of the cd and picture of Bettye in this morning's London newspaper, the Guardian, which continues to give publicity to so much soulful material.

Bettye Swann, where are you? We need to make sure that you know how much we still love your work.

Hewy Motown David,

I have her Money recordings. I will be running to get her new release. I always loved Don't Touch Me. As a kid, I blasted that song. I keep hearing rumors that she is employed by the Post Office in Louisiana. I can't get any definitive confirmation. As a fellow Postal employee, perhaps I can ask a few folks to check that out for me. Somehow, I just think that Betty wants no part of her musical life. It looks as though she's put it behind her. That's sad, as many people would just love to embrace her. I feel that she should come & get the love & respect that she's earned for the happiness that she gave to many.

The only two songs that I'm familiar with are "Make Me Yours" and "Victim Of A Foolish Heart", two of my all-time favorites. I can sing them all day and all night. Did she have a history with Motown or did Motown buy the rights to "MMY"?

The other rumour I keep on hearing is that Bettye is in Las Vegas working a a nursery nurse.

I've also heard that she became very disillusioned with the music industry many years ago and wants nothing to do with it.

A great shame as she is such a talented lady. Honest Jon, the record label releasing this cd, got such a lot of publicity for Candi Staton when they put out the cd of her Fame material a few months ago. I heard that Candi's cd did great business and it was such a thrill to see her on a prestigious British tv show as a result of her release. It's a pity that the same will porobably not happen to Bettye.

There was a small, great review in today's London paper, the Observer.

Well, the cd arrived this morning and I've played it through twice. Nothing on this cd is less than spectacular and my faith in soul music has been reaffirmed. Bettye should have been a big star, imo. Her vocal prowess is shown at its best here and everyone on this Board will not be disappointed when they buy their copy.(Hint!).

The liner notes indicate that Bettye is living in Vegas now and is working very happily in the educational field, as I am. She comes across as a very fulfilled person.

I still think it would be wonderful if someone could coax her out of retirement to do more than a few shows. Can you tell I'm a big fan of Bettye's?

Hi Motown David,

Thanks for the CD review. I've loved this woman since the first time that I heard Make Me Yours & Don't Touch Me. I truly wish that she would come back so that she could see just how many of us appreciate & love her music. Somehow, I just think that she's not enthralled with the music industry. I just wish that she were accessible to her fans. I'd love to let her know just how much I appreciate her music. I was 7 when Make Me Yours was a hit & it brings back some really great memories. I would just love the opportunity to tell her that.

Bettye Swann was absolutely GREAT! She was also
a good performer (I saw her in 1969 when Don't
Touch Me was a hit).

Despite beiong a great fan, I truly have no idea which of her tracks were hits in the States, except for Make Me Yours, of course.
Can anyone fill me in on her chart successes and their position in the charts - pop or R & B.

I'm hoping to buy the new Joel Whitburn R & B / Soul chart book in the autumn.

Make Me Yours WAS, of course, a major hit and her
biggest. The follow-up, Fall In Love With Me, did
well, too. In fact, listening to it, it's a much
better song. Some of the other Money recordings
did ok on the R&B charts, but didn't cross over
pop and weren't really major R&B hits.
At Capitol the biggest single I recall was Don't
Touch Me, which I believe was her first single
at the label. She must've done well with a few
others because she did have lps on the label.
When she went to Atlantic my favorite record was
The Boy Next Door. However, the biggest single
there was either Victim Of A Foolish Heart or
Today I Started Loving You Again. She was work-
ing with Rick Hall at Fame Studios. Those were
R&B sellers, but NOT major R&B hits. I don't
even know if she had an Atlantic lp. My brother
has those books with chart info. so perhaps he
can look up exactly what positions her records
made.

"Make Me Yours" was her biggest hit #1 R&B and #21 pop, "Fall In Love With Me" #67 pop(I thought it was her best)I think "Don't Touch Me" made the top 50, but not sure.

Many thanks for that info, Randy and Tony. I'm very surprised that the hits were few and far between ofr this soulful, classy lady.

We've been away travelling for a few days and the Bettye Swan cd has featured prominently on the car cd player, which has better sound quality than my system at home!

I now long even more to hear the lady sing in concert and it's gonna be my (impossible)dream for the next week or two.

Hello,
Randy, do you mean that most of these songs were produced by Rick Hall at Fame Records?
Does anyone know who the musicians are? The liner notes doesn't tell you all that much.

*sorry for my english*...

I'm excited about the new Bettye Swann cd. I hope to pick up a copy soon. I have the complete Money recordings cd. The cd has a few remixed versions of songs from the original session tapes.

The remixed "Make Me Yours" sounds good but it's missing the backing vocals.

The remixed "You Gave Me Love" is outstanding!

Hi Randy,
Thought you might like to see this.
Tony Bell(RIP) and I, wrote and produced a few
songs on Bettye for Atlantic Records. One of them
was "The Boy Next door". She is a Sweetheart.

Welcome, Hank ! If these tracks were produced by Rick Hall at Fame, the players must have been the usual Fame section, Barry Beckett (organ), Roger Hawkins (drums), David Hood (bass), Jimmy Johnson (guitar), and others.

Hey Phil, Do you have any idea if any of her
Atlantic recordings, particularly The Boy Next
Door, will be (or have been?) issued on CD???
