Greetings All,

"Let's Get Serious" on the subject of what really makes an entertainer(s)/artist(s) successful - prominent and a legendary player in the field of Arts and Entertainment from Past to Present?

For instance - has it to do with fame or fortune gained - and/or both? In other words - whose estates in the business are propably still receiving nice/huge royalties, and most likely still will be - until the end of relative time as we know it?

I read an article where Rick James was quoted recently as saying - and I can't find it now - that he was worth millions, and that he felt with the sampling of his music by the ones out there on center stage today - he still held a viable product, and he saw himself getting paid for days/years from that and touring.

Remember when - Otis Williams stated a year or so ago - that the Tempts were still making big money with folks sampling the Tempts music and with them still performing on tour?

Let's take songwriters for an example. Now we know that usually they are the ones that continue to reap the benefits of a hit song - but not all of them were a Smokey - for example. What other artists/entertainers are still getting paid for some of their massive hits - i.e., Stevie Wonder - Marvin Gaye's estate - Diana Ross - Michael Jackson - Norman Whitfield - Gamble and Huff - Jimi Hendrix - Curtis Mayfield's estates - and so on?

So - what I am curious about is who was/is in the business that is/are still racking in big bucks for their body of work or parts of it? I don't mean the one hit wonders that either are well known for a hit record or two - yet little else - and - whether they be writer - producer or artists. I mean the ones that don't have to ever contribute to their works again - and they and their ancestors/heirs will still get paid.

The Diana Ross question brought this up for me. Who is still getting paid and will - albiet if only in name only eventually - and for many years and decades to come? That is if the world is still as we know and appreciate it in the next five to ten years.

How many of the folks we love, admire and speak of today, never have to work again because they have millions in the bank - and will always recieve compensation/roylaties from their works - and this is whether or not said artist(s)/entertainer(s) is/are still with us or have passed on?

Welcome back Zaya.

PS. I have been to the dentist office twice this week. Soon I will have first time caps/crowns and some more stuff. Getting my mouth together - although it is a pain in my mouth. LOL!

"I'm Looking For A Job."

Peace and blessings!

I think the granddaddy of them all is Paul McCartney. He makes millions before he gets out of bed in the morning.

GoGo, James just sold his catalogue for $30-million, so ya know he aint got to be the hardest workin' man in show biz no mo'(smile!)

And quiet as it's kept, yeah, Mr. Cold Blooded Freadeak was paid in full, and holdin' for the rest of his days had he lived... He had children, so they'll be nicely taken care of... So, too, Barry White, Curtis Mayfield, Ray Charles, Mtume, and a whole long list of folks who wrote, published, and owned what they created... That's the key, owning what you create...

And as much flak as the kids in HipHop catch at SoulfulDetroit, I don't know of any of the older entertainers who could claim shares, much less ownership in a major sports franchise, as well as clothing lines, and film and television roles... These artists work will not be re-recorded in the future, but their cds will continue to sell, and if they don't, they've diversified their financial portfolios so well, it probably wont even be necessary. It's a different world than it was yesterday, and these kids are taking advantage of that... More power to them...

Thank you for the holla, GoGo, I missed you!(smile!)

Peace!
Isaiah

All,

Hey Isaiah. LOL - I was just getting ready to post.

"What's Happening Brother?" "Ohhhhhhhh - what's happening my friend?" "Ain't got no job - my friend. Money is more available than it's ever been." "Oh Lord - I just don't understand - what's going on - across this land. Ohhhhh - what's happening brother?" "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - what's happening - what's happening - my friend?" LOL!

I agree with you - and especially about some of today's Hip-hoppers - movers and shakers. My God - where can some of them go but "Up - Up and Away?" LOL!

I missed you too - w/your thought provoking self.

All,

Chi Drummer - great - great call concerning Paul. Elvis's estate probably got it going on more than anyones.

How about folks like Quincy Jones? I noticed years ago and after Sammy Davis Jr. died - that his wife Altrovise (sp?) - intended on marketing his works for profit - and thereby securing her and his children's future.

Mainly though - I saw it as an important move to build up Mr. Davis's estate. Ain't nothing wrong w/that line of thinking - IMO. It's viable after all. If a person that has passed on left a legacy and it can be marketed for profit - then by all means - cash in. For many are the artists that are/were trying to make some money whilst they cater and catered their crafts.

Sure - one can speak about the Fame and a specific piece of work - but the entire body of work - so far and in this day and age - is the key.

Isaiah - you agreed that you also heard that Rick James would still get paid - and it matters little that his catalog isn't as big as some others we speak on - i.e., Smokey & MJ's - and the like. Check Out the "Discuss Detroit" website. Mannnnn - some of them folks raked Rick over the coals, making mention that if not for his infamous behavior - no one would remember him or his works.

And let's take a look at Michael Jackson. I don't care what no one says. IMO - he is one of the greatest singers of all times - and his heirs should always be taken care of, and holds true regardless on how his court case turns out.

Great news to hear about James Brown selling his catalog for $30M. What!!!??? I'll say!
