Soul Sister:

Otis Redding is already a member of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. In fact, I think he was inducted by Little Richard, who sang his DOCK OF THE BAY and I CAN'T TURN YOU LOOSE at the ceremony.

And Gladys is as well, as a member of the Pips. But unless she gets a string of solo hits, I don't think she'll be inducted as a solo artist.

Artists I'd like to see inducted:
Diana Ross (solo)
Dionne Warwick
Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles/Labelle
The Marvelettes
Mary Wells

Hi Soul Sis...your choices are right on. BTW, Otis Redding was inducted into the RRHOF in 1989.

I beleive Luther will be eligble in 2006.

Personally speaking, I think that the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame sucks. First of all, its very NAME practically insures that the majority of great Soul artists & groups will find election to be extremely difficult.

In the 50s, Rock & Roll was essentially watered down "RACE" RECORDS" ie. RHYTHM AND BLUES. Around the 60s, when Elvis went TOTALLY MOR POP, & the advent of the British Invasion, good old "ROCK & ROLL", essentially meant POP & ROCK. That essentially relegated SOUL & RHYTHM & BLUES to step-brother status. Rock & Roll became the stomping grounds for many POP artists. A look at the charts will prove that.

When you consider the history & origins of Rock & Roll, how in the world did POP & ROCK become so dominant?? If as history tells us, Rock & Roll derived from R&B, can someone please explain to me how the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame has become the home of such soulful singers as The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Four Seasons & other basically POP groups??? And let's not talk about the solo acts!!!

As long as the present criteria remain in place, the ORIGINAL Rock & Rollers...the R&B pioneers & Soulmen will always get short shrift.

They should change the name to the "POP Hall Of Fame". That would be a more accurate depiction. It's sad when you consider that the R&B Pioneers were the orignators of the genre. It's as though they're begging for crumbs off the table. Then when a well respected group like The Dells FINALLY gain admittance to its hallowed halls, they're treated like an after thought & described as a "50s DOO WOP Group". As though their 60s & 70s hits never existed.

These are the type of geniuses, the type of "experts" running the whole shebang. As far as I'm concerned, they have have it. And they can stick it as well.

Me too--Bluebelles and LaBElle have been groundbreakers and hugely talented and even have a songwriter which the Hall of Fame loves--Nona.

Soul-wise, I'll agree with what's been posted and add the O'Jays (who were up for nomination recently and failed to make the grade).

Others:
The Hollies
The Moody Blues
Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels
The Turtles
Paul Revere & the Raiders
Neil Diamond
Neil Sedaka
Chicago

I would love to include acts like the Beau Brummels and the Zombies to that list, but I suspect that the Hall of Lame would just write them off as 'cult artists'.

Best,

Mark

I have a problem with the RRHOF being in Cleveland because as the FALSE story goes, Allen Freed , having originally been a Cleveland Dj,.
is given the credit for coining the term 'rock and roll"

This is a blatant lie!!!
We all know that "rock and roll" has been used by African Americans as a metaphor for sexual intercourse for decades before Freed was even born!!

Having visited the RRHOF last summer, I have to say that the percentage of Af Am artists represented there is extremely low.

If you want Hendrix and BB King.., Chuck Berry, well, they are there.
If you want the Supremes..well, they are there and not much else.

I've never understood why some people seem so concerned that a particular Soul/R&B singer is or isn't in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Might as well try and get Stevie Wonder into some Jazz Hall Of Fame - it would be just as pointless, IMO.

Who needs the "seal of approval" from the RRHOF anyway?

BJL:

THERE IT IS!!!! You took the words right out of my mouth!! Think about it: they don't call it the Soul, R&B or Funk Hall Of Fame, do they?? What more do we need to know about it. The name says it all as far as I'm concerned. Like I said, they can shove it.

Hell, for as many records as he "borrowed" from the original Rock & Rollers, Pat Boone should be the President. Keeping it real, that's what that place is all about. It sure isn't for our R&B pioneers.

as I have said when this topic was discussed before when country great Johnny Cash was voted in ,that the name should be changed to The Music Hall Of Fame.

now don't misunderstand me, I have nothing agaist Johnny Cash, he wrote and sang some great music but something is wrong with the process when some pioneer greats can't get in and he does, so that's why the name needs to be changed and then I could understand it a little bit better.

Hi Ron,

I can agree with that 1000%. Even if they did that, guess what?? Groups like The Whispers, etc would still have an extremely long & difficult time gaining admittance. They need to change some of the criteria, whatever it is. Most importantly, they need a better cross section of voters. These "experts" that are doing the voting seem not to get it at all.

I mean, they called The Dells a "50s Doo Wop group"!!! Then gave them all of a minute to sum up a outstanding 50 year career!!!

What blatant disrespect & a slap in the face to all of us who love that Classic Soul. It seems like the only thing these folks know about Soul is Seoul, North Korea!!!

I recently visited the Rock Hall specifically to view The Suprems Gowns exhibit. The Gown display was amazing @50 gowns, some in complete sets, all in fairly good shape. Some wear but in great condition for costumes over 30 years old. In general I was very disappointed with the rest of the museum. The museum was much smaller than I had expected and does not seem to have much room to expand or add other inductees. The majority of floor space was dedicated to either Jimmy Hendrix and The Beatles. There was only one small widow display of Motown memorabila on permanent display. What I found disturbing was the ammount of space alloted for non-inductees. They had clothing from the likes of Brittney Spears,Christina Aguilera, The Back Street Boys, TLC, Janet Jackson, Hanson, etc.... If I had not gone specifically for the Supremes display I would have been highly disappointed. I will most likely never spend the money to go to the Rock Hall again, especially since I traveled from Los Angeles.

Hi Everyone,
I was in Chicago this weekend (minus Ralph) when Patti Labelle was waiting for an elevator at the hotel with me. NO ONE (and I mean no one) was allowed to get into the elevator with her. There were some fans that were very disappointed!! She, I believe, was doing a benefit there.
