.....we've touched the surface of this over the past couple of years, usually through "Blue Eyed Soul" or "EERGGGHHHhhhh" style threads. Musically, this group here is very diverse, so could you tell us your favorite non soulful artist or two, and why you like them?
Thanks in advance

Jefferson Airplane (definitely not Jefferson
Starship) - they were such a diverse bunch, all
of them with their own individual styles but somehow they managed to work together to create some amazingly innovative work - I don't think there's a band like them.

Hundreds more - Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny, early Frank Zappa, the Chocolate Watch Band, the Zombies, when I'm in the right mood
Capercaillie (a Scots Gaelic band), Blue Oyster
Cult, Love, ... I've got pretty wide tastes.

The Beatles
Their numbers and artistry speak for themselves.
The Monkees - just 'cause they were fun.
The Rolling Stones
Phil Collins (as a solo artist)
Sting (as a solo artist)
Steely Dan

I guess it's debatable whether or not these artists were "soulful", but I love their music anyway.

Hello Submarine to all!

These are some of my favorites. I don't includes jazz, latin and fusion acts who, some times makes "soulful" music. Only pop, rock or another kind of music:

-Mike Oldfield, especially Ommadawn is a very spiritual and mystical symphony

-Cat Stevens. It's also very mystical

-Vivaldi and Ravel are, IMHO, the most mellow classical music

-Carlos Nez (spanish bagpipe player who makes also very symphonic ethereal music)

-Benoit Jutras, the responsible of the good music by le Cirque du Soleil

-Some sides by Brian Ferry and the late Freddie Mercury (solo acts)

-Some flamenco acts as the late Camarn de la Isla and Carlos Heredia

-Some "techno / dance" acts as Terranova and Peace Orchestra, very mellow and symphonic

Manny:

That is one electic and "electric" list.

I'll have to check out some of it. Anybody who digs Chucho Valdes, is somebody who I will pay attention to when it comes to music.

I drive my wife nuts with my musical taste. I see nothing wrong with putting Sinatra on with Chucho, and Daft Punk plus Led Zeppelin, CCR and Miles and Coltrane plus the Beatles a few soul discs...hitting random play and letting the show begin.

Serge Gainsbourg, for the quality and meaning of the lyrics, poetic and sensual, music from the heart. Some favorites: 69 Annee Erotique, Sea Sex and Sun, My Lady Heroine.

Francois de Roubaix, self taught but deeply personal and inspired compositions, some tracks have a funky edge to them like "carceral jerk"

Arthur Russell, lots of "left field" experimental tracks but works in a strange way. Favorites Dinosaur L - Go Bang or Corn Belt

Astor Piazzola, "godfather" of Tango, melancolic, makes me love the accordion. Fav: Vuelvo al sur

Django Reinhart, master of the accoustic guitar, very cool gypsy vibe, favorites: Manoir de mes reves, nuages

Everything But The Girl, somehow I think the voice of Tracey Thorn has depth and the compositions of Ben Watt seem to stick for days in my mind, Their music seems to appeal to a lot of soul music listeners. Favorites: Lullaby of Clubland

Dusty Springfield, very much blue eyed soul, read as story where Nina Simone threw a glass of water at her, some of her Bacharach songs could easily stand up to Dionne Warwick's versions. Favorites: Spooky, Am I The Same Girl

Hey, Cam!

Thanks for your nice comments. Here in SDF all of us discovering new things grace to the others. I don't think I were so eclectical as you says because practically all i likes got the Symphonic tag as the common denominator.

A authentic eclectical taste it's for example my wife (Sara Brightman, Cat Stevens, some catalonian singer-songwriters as Joan Manuel Serrat and Maria del Mar Bonet, Beatles, John Denver, Jeanette, Mozart, Bach,... And, grace to my influence, some Stylistics, Chi-lites and Soul Survivors songs!!)

If you have the chance, heard "Quidam" by Le Cirque du Soleil. Also I recommend to Alain, who says he loves the mellow sound of the accordion. Here are some "Carrusel" style tracks that make cry with the mellow female voice combined with this instrument.

Alain,

I also like Django and Dusty (was the glass half empty or half full?) and probably over 100 other Jazz, rock, and blues artists not initially associated with Soul. Some of my recent faves include:

John Mayer(he was on a recent Chappelle Show), especially "Bigger Than My Body"

Citizen Cope - Did Sideways on a recent Santana album.

I've always been a big Joan Armatrading fan. She's one of only 2 musical acts I paid to see over the past year. The other were the Funk Bros.

And what about some other acts classified as "techno" or "dance" as:

-Dido

-A Guy Called Gerald (his "Humanity" it's great!)

-Smith & Mighty

-US 3 's "Hand On The Torch" album

-Osibisa (their 70's "Beatiful 7" it's very joyful symphonic rock!)

-Fania All-Stars (horn section, percussion, voices and if you understand spanish, also the lyrics is very rich)

And another suggestion for Alain who likes pop-soul and Dusty Springfield: Beth Hirsh (pardon-me if you know previously). His tune "Life Is Mine" and the !K7 Records album "Early Days" is a blend of folk-pop-soul aclaimed by the criticals as the new Laura Nyro

Peace!

Destruction,

The glass must have been full!!! LOL I think Nina Simone did not like the idea of a white girl singing black music

Many,

Your tastes are very eclectic and that's a compliment.
I meant to ask you, what part of Spain do you live in? Where do you buy your music?

Hello Submarine!

Hey, Alain
Thanks for your compliment, I keep on thinkin' i'm not eclectic as i only likes symphonic music.
I got a special sympathy for you because i remember your first post in SD was a trhead about Philly Sound that you started. And I'm a very Phillysound lover also!

I lives near to Tarragona (in Valls, the city of the birth of famous human towers). I buy music in some "underground" second-hand music stores in Riera Baixa Street in Barcelona. Here are diverse stores specialized in Soul-Funk and i find some rarities as "Ebonys" PIR LP or, more recently, "Spiritual Concept" album (also from PIR). Some of the vynils are totally news, despite the fact the store is "second-hand".

Some other "rock" acts i likes (grace to a friend who bring out for me) are:
-Todd Rungrent (another philadelphian!)
-Kevin Ayers (solo and with Mike Oldfield)
-Toto
-Tij Van Leer (flute piccolo player very deliciously fool!)

Manny,

I haven't been in Barcelona in a while, but I miss it. There's one thing I remember Watch out for the hangover!!! 1 shot of whiskey in Barcelona = 4 shots in the States.

I also picked up the CD re-issue of the Ebonys but found it too sweet for my taste.

Here's a list of LP I don't care too much for

Spiritual Concept - Spiritual Concept
Force of Nature - Unemployement Blues
Edwin Birdsong - Edwin Birdsong. What the hell was that lollipop song?
Don Covay - Travellin in Heavy Traffic
Carolyn Crawford - Sounded better with Motown

Of the less popular PIR artists, I truly like The Futures in my opinion the most underrated group, Anthony White, Silk, Shirley Jones & the Jones Girls, Robert Upchurch.

Are there any PIR releases you don't like?

Hello again, Alain!

Very funy what you tolds. I was living in Barcelona from Monday to Friday during years when i studed and, really the dinner in many restaurants are cheaper than in another place in Spain. About whisky i remember at this same period when in the weekends worked in a disco of my town as barman and at summer when coming clients from other countrys they were surprised for the "generous" size of the "1/2 whisky".

In fact, I find "Ebonys" original edition LP (printed in USA).
I also searched many time the two PIR albums by Futures (since i heard "Ain't No Time For Nothing" in a compilation) until around 1996, when i find in a germany's two in one CD edition.

From your list of LP's that you don't care too much, I only got the one by Spiritual Concept. I only likes "California Woman" wich is too much rock-flavoured for my symphonic taste, but have some feeling. I ignored that Carolyn have some LP at PIR. I only knows she recorded singles and the only i got it's "You Can Be More Carefull".

This is my list of PIR / TSOP / Gamble albums i would like to find some day (in vynil or CD):
-Thad Jones / Mel Lewis "Potpouri"
-Monk Montgomery "Reality"
-Anthony White "It Could Be Magic"
-Silk "Midnight Dancer"
-Soul Survivors
-Cleveland Eaton "Half & Half"
-Yellow Sunshine
-Jean Claude - T "The Bicentennial Poet"
-Michael Pedicin Jr.

As you can see i prefer (since some years on) more jazz-fusion material. Also i likes to find some compilations with hit singles by Talk Of The Town, Robert Upchurch, Ronnie James,...

Of all my PIR albums collection some are, IMHO very "solid" as "Wake Up Everybody", "Ship Ahoy" or "Love Is The Message". Other are some more "unconsisitent" and only likes one or two tracks as Lou's "Sit Down & Talk To Me" or O'Jays "Love Fever". But practically all contains at minimum one track that deserves for me the "indispensable" rated categorie (except a few as Spiritual Concept, Teddy's "This One's For You" or Intruder's "Energy Of Love", for example).

Best Regards
Peace & Soul Food

Manny,

I think you are right, I am not aware of any Carolyn Crawford LP, I was just refering to the couple singles released on PIR.

Yellow Sunshine was re-issued last year, if you don't mind re-issues.

Expansion Records also re-issued a lot of hard to find PIR back catalogue on double Sided 12" like Robert Upchurch - Devil Made Me Do It, Anthony White - Never Repay You, Silk - Can't Stop Turning You On.
I bought pretty much all of them because they sound great on a 12" with the grooves well spread.

Norman Jay's compilation of Philadelphia has also been re-issued couple weeks ago on Harmless Records. I think Norman has a very good grasp on the Philly Sound.

I like PIR jazz fusion material and I would like to add
Dexter Wansel - Theme from the Planet
Monk Montgomery - Bump de bump
Norman Harris - In Good Faith
Leon Huff - Tight Money
Billy Paul - East
to the list of my favorite jazz/fusion tracks!

Hi Alain,

Thanks for your info about some re-realises, friend. Also, recently i see a UK Westside records two originals in one CD: Norman Harri's "The Harris Machine" / L. Huff's "Here To Create Music". I was some stupid because don't buy it (i got L. Huff's album on vynil) and perhaps Norman's one it's very interesting and jazzy (??).

These are my Jazz-Fusion Philly Intl. faves:
-All the B side of People's Choice "We Got The Rythm" LP
-"Soncere" (Michael Pedicin)
-"Reality" (Monk Montgomery)
-"No Greater Love" (Leon Huff)
-"Ferry Avenue" MFSB
-All the "Life On Mars" album by Dexter Wansel
-All the album "All Things In Time" by Lou Rawls
-"Billy Boy" by Billy Paul
-All the "Mysteries Of The World" by MFSB
-"Mikey'd's" (by People's Choice)

(I think we can start a new thread about jazz-fusion, because many of these music is also very soulful, smile!)

Hi again,

I missed some ones. Who was a teenager in the 70's and not likes some things by Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream or Jean Michael Jarre?

Also, in my case influenced by my more eclectic sister, when she played it I heard also his Credence Clenwater Revival, Mungo Jerry, Neil Diamond or Juan Pardo (ex-Los Canarios) singles and LP's. Everytime i heard again those songs at the radio I apreciate it more with the plus value of the nostalgia...

Peace!

Hey, "Brass" Dsetruction,

I don't knows Focus. I only knows "Opus Pocus" by Jacko Pastorius (smile!). I got a friend from my town, Marc Moncus, a Orchestra director and composer in Germany. He studed music in Barcelona and also come to Curtis Institute in Philly. He is more young than me and when i studed in Barcelona i buy some LP's for him as a errand. One was "Introspections" by Tij Van Leer. I have had at my home some days and played it until i saw my friend and give it to him. Here in Spain were a Big Band conducted by rock singer Miguel Ros in the first 80's, a fusion experiment that featured also Tij Van Leer and appeared some times at TV. I remember Tij playing the flute and after he makes a very fool Tirol chants! (I think he is from Holland or Danmark, ?).

Hi, Medusa, thanks for mentioned Sandi Shaw. Was very popular in Spain in the 60's as the "barefoot singer".

I wanna add: Redbone, Humphrey Singers, Chicago, Roy Etzel ("Melancolie, Arrivederchi"), Adriano Celentano ("Il Mondo Gira"!!)...

OK, like Medusa, I wasn't going to go there, but... I since had a change of heart.
Singers I like for the following reasons who are in the "non-soul" catagory.
So here's my list:

Singer's who are soulful but do NOT sing "soul music":
Mel Torme'
Morgana King
Melissa Manchester
Tony Bennett
k.d. Lang
Willie Nelson
Patsy Cline
Manhattan Transfer

Singers with heart, who are great humanitarians:
Bonnie Raitt

Hello Submarine To All!

Hey, Soulful Sister and harold MELvin AND THEN blue notes!

I agree about Tom Jones. When i was a child my mother and father saw many times at spanish TV a program called "Voces de Oro" (golden voices) where were regulars Tom Jones, Henry Stefan, Jos Guardiola, Tony Christie,...
I remember the years when Tom Jones was so popular and liked in Spain with is "Dalida" (english, spanish and spanglish versions!) that also my mother who practically only heard flamenco also likes a lot Tom Jones. He is a great crooner.

Here's my list:

BEE GEES - Great harmonies and catchy songs.

LED ZEPPELIN - Funky as hell! Their music was like listening to the Blues kicked up ten notches.

HEART - They were like a female Led Zeppelin and that lead singer Ann Wilson (?) can sing he azz off!

FOREIGNER - I might be the only black person alive who enjoys their music. LOL. 'I Want To Know What Love Is', 'Cold As Ice', 'Double Vison', 'Urgent' and 'Waiting For A Girl Like You' are all great tunes IMO!

WHITESNAKE - 'Here I Go Again', 'Is This Love' and 'Fool For Your Loving' are great pieces of soulful Rock. The early stuff is a lot better than the late 80's Hair Metal.

KIKI DEE - On the strength of her 1960's recording 'On A Magic Carpet Ride' alone.

SAMANTHA SANG - Alain, I've been trying to tell people on the forum about this woman since I've been here! If you think 'Emotion' is good then you should hear that whole album. 'I Can Still Remember', 'You Keep Me Dancing' and her remakes of 'La La Means I Love You' and The Moments' 'I Don't Wanna Go' are all fantastic and very soulful. Play these tunes for anybody and they'll swear that it's The Emotions singing! Samantha could sing her behind off and deserved much more than what she got from the music biz. I wish that she had hooked up with a producer in the late 70's who would've pushed her into even more R&B oriented territory.

I also like a lot of the Pop singers of the 30's, 40's and 50's. Singers like Doris Day, Jerry Vale, Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Patti Page, Vic Damone and Tony Bennett (back when he still had a voice). Sometimes it's refreshing just to hear singers sing things "STRAIGHT" without all of the oversinging, oversoulin' and adlibbing that you get from most R&B vocalists.

I don't know anything at all about Foreigner but 'Little Anthony' does this mind blowing performance on a song I never heard in his live show, someone told me it was a Foreigner song (?), but I don't know the name of it.

LOL at Destruction. I grew up in 1980's Central Illinois and in my town we didn't have a Black radio station. There were only Top 40 (All Hair-Metal at the time with a little Pop thrown in. NO R&B!) and Country stations. Without much to choose from I picked the best from the worst of 1980's Rock and Country. Foreigner and Whitesnake were a hell of a lot closer to Soul than Poison and Motley Crue!

Soul Sister, the song in question that Little Anthony performs is probably Foreigner's biggest hit 'I Want To Know What Love Is'. If you lived through the 80's chances are that you've heard this song many. many times. I think it's soulful stuff by Rock standards. Jennifer Holiday even makes a guest appearance on it.

Phil, I remember hearing a few of Kiki's Tamla tracks several years ago and they weren't all that great IMO. I was expecting something soulful but instead I heard overproduced Pop tunes that weren't all that great. This has been several years though so I could be mistaken.

After taking another survey it was decided that you should've gone Country instead of Foreigner. Sorry, but we gotta card ya. You gotta stay out of all posts regarding Soul for 30 months or until Foreigner posts another top 40 hit...whichever comes first. Maybe next time you'll think before you act....lol...my Man.

Rodman & Destruction

I am gonna go on a limb here and admit that at some point I liked the 2 Foreigner songs you mentioned, but I have more of a dance/garage ear than a soul ear.

Here are some tracks I also play. Don't know how controversial they are to soul purists.

Blondie: Rapture, The tide is high
Sting: If you love somebody set them free (Jellybean Remix)
Robert Palmer: Every kinda people, I didn't mean to turn you on
Elton John: Song for Guy
Captain Sensible: Wot
The Clash: Magnificent Dance
Chris Montez: The More I See You
Jorge Santana: Love The Way
France Gall: Musique
Barbra Streisand: Guilty
Toto: Georgie Porgie

Curious to hear your opinion about them!!!

Rod, Destruction, Soul Sister and anyone else who is interested.

Re - "I wanna know what Love is" by FOREIGNER.

It featured JENNIFFER HOLLIDAY and THE NEW JERSEY MASS CHOIR on backup vocals, according to Joel Whitburn's Billboard Chart publications. I believe that THE NEW JERSEY MASS CHOIR were an established Gospel aggregation at the time.

I wasn't aware at the time of issue ( 1985 ) that JENNIFFER HOLLIDAY was on it, but I did know that THE NEW JERSEY MASS CHOIR were on it as they did their own version that got released in the U.K. on Prelude a few months after FOREIGNER had their hit, and that I bought at the time.

I gave the NJMC version a spin this morning and it is a good Soulful rendition IMO .. Strong soulful vocals ( better than FOREIGNER!! ) and a gospel choir doing the backing .. it doesn't get much better than that does it!

According to the credits on my 45 it was originally a Savoy recording, so presumably it was just picked up by Prelude for International distribution.

Your attorney, Roger has made quite the case for you. You will be released with the only penalty being time served. Well done Roger. Since the choir sang, let freedom ring.

Alain,

I was about to let you out as well....till I saw "Georgie Porgie"....I hope someone post bail for you.

LOL at Destruction. Thanks Roger. Jennifer Holiday and The New Jersey Mass Choir are very prominent on the end of 'I Want To Know What Love Is'. I had no idea that The New Jersey Mass Choir had even recorded an alternate version of the tune. I'd like to hear that. If it was soulful enough for them than it's good enough for me!

Hey Alain. Sting's 'If You Love Somebody' has always bored the daylights outta me. I wasn't aware of the remix you mentioned but I might enjoy it if it's more upbeat than the original. It's been years since I've heard Robert Palmer's 'I Didn't Mean To Turn You On' but I remember preferring Cherrelle's original version. I've always enjoyed Blondie's music. Not enough to actually go out and purchase it but if it comes on I don't mind. :-)

I'm here to post bail for Alain.

I have both the TOTO and the LUTHER VANDROSS/CHARME versions of the song and guess what .. I prefer TOTO's .. largely because it features CHERYL LYNN on the chorus!!

Rodman,

I never liked the original "If you love somebody set them free" by Sting, but the John Jellybean remix of the track did it for me!
Jellybean added percusssions and made the bassline much more "in ya face" It became a classic at the Paradise Garage.
I like to drop this song once in a while because most people think they don't like it until they hear the remix.

Alain and Roger,

If you can get that annoying chorus out of my head...I'll let you off with a fine:

Locate a copy of "Timothy" and play it 10 times... no too harsh, 3 times in a row

I'm sure you both remember "Timothy"
