I just purchased Boz Scaggs double greatest hit album and was very impressed by the soulfulness of his voice. I had never been a big fan of his hits i.e. Lido, Jo Jo ect.but could not believe my ears when I heard what sounded like pure Motown music on the album. One song called Hercules sounded like James Jamerson and Dennis Coffey. Low and behold when I look at the song credits, I found out that Johnny Bristol the great Motown producer had produced Boz- Slow Dancer album. And when I looked at who worked on several of these songs, I found out that JJ and Dennis were indeed on these songs along with several other Funk Brothers. Anyone have any additional info- Dennis give us the facts.
Thanks

Hello TD and Lady Mystique. I played on the hit Hang in There Baby by Johnny Bristol. I think we recorded it at Cherokee Sounds in LA. Jamerson was on some sessions with me out there. We also did an album with Martha Reeves on MCA produced by Richard Perry. I used Jamerson on my Instant Coffey album. I was doing so many sessions in LA with different producers, it was hard to tell who the artist was. I don't remember meeting Boz Scaggs even though I played on some of his tracks.

I liked Boz's version of Fenton Robinson's "Somebody Loan Me A Dime" with my man, the incomparable Duane Allman.

Boz Scaggs has said in interviews that it was
Johnny Bristol who taught him how to really sing
when they worked on the "Slow Dancer" album.

Boz' "Down Two Then Left" is one of his best albums - a real grower that doesn't hit you
immediately. I'll have to pull it out and play
it again.

Most people know Boz from the breakout 1976 album "Silk Degrees" (Lowdown, It's Over, Lido, What Can I Say) but he had 5 albums out in the 70's before that after leaving the Steve Miller Band.

"Slow Dancer" came out in '74 right before "Silk Degrees." Johnny Bristol wrote some cuts and did a great job producing the album. "You Make It Hard To Say No" got airplay at the time on FM Rock stations. The title cut, "Hercules, I Got Your Number & Pain Of Love" were standouts too. I agree, it was a pretty good, straight ahead soul album. As things went, it was a precursor of more great things to come when "Silk Degrees" followed.

Along with JJ and Dennis, the album was loaded with other fantastic session players too like James Gadson, Ed Greene, Daid T. Walker, Ernie Watts, Wah Wah Watson and plenty more.

The original cover had a picture of Boz walking on the beach in sunglasses and a Speedo-type bathing suit. I guess CBS Records didn't like it because it disappeared from the stores and a new cover came out later.

I think "Down Two Then Left" was an underated follow up in '77. There were some dynamite cuts -"Hard Times, Whatca Gonna Tell Your Man, Hollywood and We're Waiting" to name a few.

Then later came the jams "JoJo" and "Miss Sun" in the early 80's.

I likes specially his 90's hit "Sierra", IMHO the most soulful i have heard by Boz Scaggs.

Peace!

I haven't really heard too much of Boz's later stuff. I loved "Down Two Then Left" it's one of my favorites--I even bought all of the singles from it. I always thought the album was released a few months too late. But then again "Silk Degrees" was still selling...
