Hi this is Kev-Lo you know growing up through the years I always said the 60's was a decade full of ups and downs. And with All of the great music we loved and cherished and losing inspirational people like John F. Kennedy,Malcom X,Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. We still managed to survive the trials and trivilations that were upon us.but to me 1966 was the year of the 60's.We were still in the peak of Motown and the war in Vietnam was growing steadily and that's when the soul era really took notice. In 1966 songs like HE'LL BE BACK made us realize just what the war was about and what people were going through.1966 was also the yeat that soul legend Curtis Mayfield introduced the first family of soul(the 5 stairsteps) to the soul era.Even the pop music became a powerful inspiration in our lives. |

1966 is easily my favourite year for music - almost everything issued that year whether pop. soul, garage had a spark of life and imagination about it. It's the year I really got the bug, roaming about with a transistor radio glued to my ear just amazed at what I was hearing. The incredible thing about it is that nearly forty years later I'm still finding records from then that I'd never heard and most of them still get to me. It was apparently the peak year for the number of different singles issued in the US during the sixties. And everything under 3 minutes :-) Davie |

I remember 1966. I was just starting the first grade & I think that the music was great, both Pop & Soul. I think that the music still had a lot of it's innocent appeal. In fact, I think that was the last year of musics' innocence. I think that everything began changing in '67, the seeds of unrest were starting to show. In '68, the calm, underlying unrest blew sky high & music, Soul music in particular was never the same. Great, but much of the innocence was lost. |

1966 and 1967 were the best years in music by far. You had it all Motown at it's peak, Beatles, Beach Boys, Four Seasons and great British Invasion groups along with great bublegum music, and Psycadelic Rock, folk Rock More deversity in music than ever before and after. |

ChiDrummer, I take it you know that the Blues Project were the band behind Sun Ra on that "Batman" LP. That has got to be one of the oddest concepts ever - I've yet to hear it but I imagine it's pretty strange :-) Did you buy it because it was a Batman album or because it was Sun Ra ? Davie |

Davie, I wish I could say I was hip enough to buy that album because it was Sun Ra. Truth is I was 6 and of course, it was because Batman & Robin were on the cover. I didn't find out it was Sun Ra until just a few years ago. BTW the CD is out now. Do you happen to know the players on that record? |

Two of my all time favorites were released in 1966: "Sunny" by Bobby Hebb and Jimmy Ruffin's "What Becomes of The Brokenhearted" - IMO one of the most classic-sounding Motown hits of all time. |

R&B was hot in 1966--in the fall we saw an R&B tour headlined by Joe Tex, his "Hold What You Got" was a huge hit that year, Mary Wells, who'd hit with "Dear Lover", Barbara Lewis, Lee Dorsey, the Van Dykes, Pigmeat Markham, William Bell, etc. |

Gee Soul Sister you can evoke some memories. That year I went on the Marine Corp Ball and had a ball. Won a Funky Broadway Contest at a USO dance and always preferred Papa Got a Brand New Bag, part II! Now that was the jam! |

Hey Spyder & Soul Sister ! Spyder is right because it was released near the Christmas holidays. I remember because my mother brought the record at this department store in the Bronx called Hears. As a matter of fact, I made a late 1966/ early 1967 CD in tribute to Spyder's "Stand By Me". I'll post the songs later. Great post Kev Lo ! It's great to see so many posts by 1966 fans! I would say that not only was it the best year ever for music, we are approaching the 38th anniversary of the BEST WEEK from the best year. Here are some of the highlights from a Top 50 list that I have from a Southeast Michigan radio station for the week of August 29, 1966: You Can't Hurry Love-Supremes 96 Tears-? & the Mysterians Beauty's Only Skin Deep-Temptations Yellow Submarine/Eleanor Rigby-Beatles Cherish-Association Respect-Rationals Cherry Cherry-Neil Diamond Sunshine Superman-Donovan Summertime-Billy Stewart 7 and 7 Is-Love You're Gonna Miss Me-13th Floor Elevators Dangling Conversation-Simon & Garfunkel All Strung Out-Nino Tempo & April Stevens Reach Out, I'll Be There-4 Tops I've Got You Under My Skin-4 Seasons Psychotic Reaction-Count 5 Working In The Coal Mine-Lee Dorsey Last Train To Clarksville-Monkees Get Away-Georgie Fame Under My Thumb-Del Shannon Rosanna-Capreez Wipe Out-Surfaris Got To Handle It-Capitols Love Is A Hurtin' Thing-Lou Rawls Just Like A Woman-Bob Dylan If they were smart, some DJ or radio station would do a special salute to 1966 on the Sunday after next. You may also recall that the Beatles played their last concert that day, in San Francisco. It's been all downhill since then!!! |

Jim, this is weird ! I was reading an article on the Rationals (in Jeff Jarema's Here 'Tis fanzine) last night which reproduced that exact chart. The 13th Floor Elevators seems to have a bigger hit in the Detroit area than anywhere else. |
