I just read that the anti-Bush group America Coming Together is "putting a current spin on a 1975 hit, anti-Bush musicians Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott and Eve are remaking "Wake Up Everybody" to mobilize new voters.
In 1976, Democrats blasted the song by Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes to court black voters to back Jimmy Carter's first White House bid. Today, the artists are recording the remake, Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds announced Tuesday. An album will be available next month.
Sales of the album, which also includes songs by Yoko Ono, Marvin Gaye and Linda Rondstadt, will benefit America Coming Together, a voter mobilization group opposed to President Bush."

I am non partisan at the moment so I do not endorse nor object to this but was wondering what everyone thought about using songs like this to push politics?????

I agree with Eli. I heard a clip of Mary J. Blige doing a little bit of the song. Surprised to hear her in tune kinda sort of? :-)

Hello Submarine to all!

All is "political".
Political, means "citizen" (from greek, "polis"). And all the decent people, including artists, have a minor or major social conscience. They can be more or minus concerned.

If "Wake Up Everybody" aided in another time to make a better and internationally respected America, it's possible (an i hope it) this can be possible now. I think Bush is a pre-potent face of America that deserves to disappear.

I remember reading in "Rolling Stone" a declaration by Walter Williams, who explains he was very happy with the fact "Love Train" was used for the campaign by Al Gore.
Sadly (and many people says that the results were manipulated) this ellections were "gained" by republicans.

Also, there are some songs created "ex-professo" for some candidates as Jessie Jackson's "Run Jessie Run" by Rev. James Cleveland & Lou Rawls that it's one of my gospel favorites.

Hope that the "progressist" people of the United States, finally got the politicians that deserves. If "Wake Up Everybody" have some "responsability" in this fact, this were, in addition, a very good tribute to John Whitehead.

Peace & Soul Food

Musicians and politics are like bread & butter.
Where would we be without:

For What it's Worth
Ohio
Ballad of the Green Berets
War
The World is a Getto
The Revolution will not be Televised
Ronnie Talk to Moscow
It's Not a Rag, It's a Flag
even Praise the Lord & Pass the Ammunition

What's strange now is if a certain political party doesn't like what's been said they want to take away the artist's source of income and call it a consequence of the artist's free speech.

I don't see a problem in using songs to bring attention to political issues. Protest songs and songs with politcal and/or social themes have been a part of the music industry for many years.

Here are a few more:
"Where Have All The Flowers Gone'
"We Shall Overcome"
"Blowin' In The Wind"
"Sun City"
"Abraham, Martin and John"
"Bring The Boys Home"
