Yesterday, I was listening to my Rick James CD at work and I heard "Give It to Me Baby". I was wondering...that deep voice that says "Hey Girl" a couple of times near the end of the song--was that the great Melvin Franklin? I would assume so (seeing as how the Temps sang on "Super Freak" with Rick and he sang on their tune "Standing on the Top", so they probably had a nice working relationship), but I'd like to know for sure. Best, Mark |

Hi Mark, As I recall it, it definitely was Melvin. I'll double check, but I'm sure that it was Melvin. |

I'm sure that's Melvin. Melvin is also Rick's uncle by the way. |

Yes, members of the Tempts (including Melvin Franklin) appear on the "Street Songs" LP. You hear Rick yell, "Temptations, sing..!" a couple of times in the track "Super Freak." Also, around that time (1981), members of the group (including Melvin Franklin) appear on Teena Marie's album "It Must Be Magic." On the title track, Teena yells, "Temptations, sing..!" LOL |

They sure were on that Teena Marie album. I forgot about that. Those were the only two albums played in my neighborhood during the summer of '81. |

I know I played those albums a lot, too. btw: While you hear Melvin's voice on Teena's track, "It Must Be Magic," his opening line ("You are under my power. It is the power of love...") is a throwback to a similar appearance he made in the 1967 Marvelettes record, "My Baby Must Be a Magician." |

Yeah...everytime I hear his voice on SILENT NIGHT (1980), a tear comes to my eye, especially at the end. |

The Temptations recorded two versions of Silent Night. I didn't care much for the second version...or was it the first??? I'll have to check the old CD collection!! I know that I have two different versions of Silent Night by The Temptations. (Message edited by juicefree20 on August 11, 2004) |

Yeah...the first one was in 1970(?)-CHRISTMAS CARD-which featured Eddie singing lead. The one I am talking about is on-GIVE LOVE AT CHRISTMAS-released in 1980. It featured all of them siging different parts, but what takes me everytime is Melvin's ending on the song. Good Evening Juice I think the 1st was with Eddie Kendrick and the 2nd was with Glenn Leonard. Both we're straight. I think Glenn was the best pick to sing Eddie's part when he was a Tempt and he was a good Tempt to by the way. Don |

You know, if you listen to the opening of The Marvelettes' "My Baby Must Be A Magician", that's Melvin...another GREAT Smokey production led by Wanda. |

Yes guys , that was Glenn Leonard on the long version of Silent Night, Dennis & Glenn share leads and the rest of the guys really blow...with Melvin bringing up the bottom. It is one of the most requested and played X mas records in Chi-town every year. It was used in the intro to the movie Friday after Next (?) (Ice Cube/Mike Epps) sadly the movie was not as good as the song. Don you know I agree with you about Glen Leonard, he was in a category by himself. I miss all the Temptations. :-( Kdubya |

Yeah he sounds like Melvin.... I liked Harry M, he was just one of those guys who had The Temptation persona down pat. I guess his illness and near death experience sort of left him on the outs..... Ray Davis was also very cool and superbly talented. Hey SDF everytime I get emotional about the Tempts I put in the DVD of Standing on The Top.....dam.............they slide, they glide, they funk it up, Dennis, David, Eddie, Melvin, Glenn, Richard, Otis..... |
