Hi this is Kev-Lo yes Maxine Brown was pretty much a underrated soul diva that had a seduction and soulful voice.

Brown's first recorded for Nomar Records.Song's like ALL IN MY MIND and FUNNY hit the billboard rhythm and blues top 5 in 1961.

Hailing from Kingstree,South Carolina Maxine Brown grew up singing the praises of the Lord.she then relocated to New York City.In new York she continued singing gospel before shifting to R&B.

In late fall of 1964 when the soul era was just beginning to take off her seductive and soulful record OH NO NOT MY BABY was just one of a number of superlative recordings. Her other songs like ONE STEP AT A TIME was also a great soul hit.She also did some nice duets with Chuck Jackson.

Good call Kev Lo!!

It was really nice to see Maxine perform on the PBS special recently. I remember as a little, little kid around '63, Maxine & Chuck Jackson were very popular here in New York. Two of my favorites by her is since I Found You & We'll Cry Together.

Excellent, excellent singer!!!

I love Maxine Brown! 'Oh No Not My Baby' (with Dee Dee Warwick on the hook) is a classic. Her hit duets with Chuck Jackson ('Something You Got', Hold On I'm Coming', 'Daddy's Home') also get a lot of spins in my house. And let's not forget about the excellent 'We'll Cry Together' from 1969. This song was a hit all over again for Maxine when it was sampled by the rapper Ja Rule a few years back.

The lady's pure class! If anyone would like to read Maxine's story I suggest you pick up the book "Ladies Of Soul" by David Freeland that came out a few years back. She has some interesting things to say about her career in there.

I've got a rare, late 60's promo 45 of 'Love In Them There Hills' by Maxine on the Epic label. I can't remember what the flip is off the top of my head. I don't really care for the song 'Love In Them There Hills' but I do know that it was written by Gamble & Huff and recorded by The Pointer Sisters sometime in the 70's.

Maxine is a great artist and it is pure joy to know her. She is so personable, upbeat and yet she is so grounded and down to earth. I've enjoyed her company on several occasions and she is always gracious. Maxine is quite a dancer, we had a ball doing the "Electric Slide".

Here's a picture of Maxine on the left along with the Ladies of the Orlons and Steve Caldwell.

Maxine did a GREAT soulful side on the Common-
wealth United label in 1969 called "We'll Cry
Together". A truly great R&B/soulful side!

And still she has a great voice. In England last year she played to a packed audience of adoring Northern soul fans, along with Dean Parrish.

She held us all spellbound and was such a gracious lady after the show.

Sweet memories.

I met Maxine Brown backstage (after Mary Wilson's concert at B.B. Kings) and she was a most pleasant woman. I love her singing also.

Thanks for that link, Soulman.

I'm bragging, I know, but when I couldn't get a ticket for Maxine's show at Cleethorpes, I was given her email address by a friend and asked if she could pull any strings for me. Luckily, she did and I was put on the guest list by Maxine.

Now I'd never had any contact with her before this and it just goes to backup waht everybody else has been saying about her - she is a sweet, caring woman.

I know a video was shot of the show. does anyone know where I can get a copy? I stood next to the man who was recording her.

Sorry I passed by this earlier. Thanks to Wonder B's pic of Ms. Brown when she was signed to ABC/PARAMOUNT, and loved those ABC sides and will be a long time before I hear them ever. I remember only two lp's I had on her and that's..We'll Cry Together (Commonwealth/UA) and Hold On, We're Coming a duet lp wth Chuck Jackson (Wand). I don't know all the records that are played on NS scenes, I think here in America DJ's need to dig a little deep for some 60's soul even the so call obscure B,C and D records.
