Hi Ray,
Over on the Motown bulletin board somebody asked if RE are the actual band on "Let's Go Back To
Day One" on that Motown Disco Machine album from the mid-seventies. Haven't heard it myself but the guy who raised the question swears that Pete
and your good self are on it. Does that ring any bells ?

DAVIE,
THE BAND BROKE UP IN 1974,AND REFORMED FOR "BAND TOGETHER" AND "GRAND SLAM" IN 1978.WE DIDN'T BACK ANYONE ON THAT ALBUM.THE ONLY THING I CAN THINK OF IS THAT THEY PUT "WARM RIDE" ON THE ALBUM.THAT WAS THE CLOSEST WE EVER CAME TO DISCO,WITH THE BEE GEES WRITING IT FOR US.
NOT HAVING HEARD THE ALBUM,I'M JUST GUESSING.

THE ONLY OUTSIDE,OR BACKING WORK THAT RARE EARTH EVER DID,WAS TO WORK WITH JOHN BARRY ON A SONG FOR THE MOVIE "KING KONG".THAT WAS QUITE AN EXPERIENCE,BUT THE SONG ENDED UP NOT BEING USED IN THE MOVIE.THAT'S A TRACK ON R.E. THAT NO ONE HAS EVER HEARD.

Thanks, Ray

The album was "Discotech" (Motown 821, 05/75)
credited to the Magic Disco Machine - looks like
a studio-only affair to me.

I had my doubts about any RE involvement as the
producer was Hal Davis and I couldn't think of
the band ever working with him.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

If you want to have a look at the Motown board
they're at www.boards.motown.com

Rare Earth have their own section - if you've got the time drop in and say hello - I'm sure they'd love that.

Hope you're enjoying your break.

Barry WHite did the "Theme From King Kong"...I got an acetate of it and then they released it commercially!

Wonder if it is the same song....it was about 1975 ish

DAVIE
THANKS FOR THE INFO.I'M SURE YOU'RE RIGHT ABOUT THAT ALBUM.

JOHN,
THE SONG WE DID WAS AN INSTRUMENTAL,WITH AN AFRICAN BEAT.IT WAS INTENDED TO BE USED WHEN THEY CAME TO THE GIANT WALL IN THE MOVIE.IT WAS CALLED "THE WALL".THE FOUNDATION WAS WRITTEN BY JOHN BARRY,AND WE IMPROVISED FROM THERE.I STILL HAVE A TAPE OF IT.

HERE'S A STORY I READ RECENTLY.I FOUND IT AMAZING.
I HAPPENED TO NOTICE THAT THE "ALL MUSIC" SITE HAD GIVEN ME A CREDIT FOR PLAYING ON CLIFTON CHENIER'S RECORDS.HE IS THE MAN CREDITED FOR STARTING ZYDECO MUSIC.
I KNEW I HADN'T PLAYED ON HIS STUFF SO I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT THE ERROR.
HIS GUITAR PLAYER WAS RAYMOND "SHWANK" MONETTE.
HE WAS BORN IN 1936(10 YEARS BEFORE ME),AND DIED IN 1977.HE ALSO DID SOME STUDIO WORK INCLUDING JOE TEX.OH....BY THE WAY,HE'S AFRICAN AMERICAN.
WHAT ARE THE ODDS ON THAT ONE!!

Hello Ray,

just want to take the chance to say hello and tell
you that I finally found your "Scorpion" album in the UK and let it ship to Germany.
Great record, I like it a lot! It shows a lot of all your talents and that Michael Chambell/Champion guy was really a hot and enthusiatic singer!

The funny fact is, that I held a copy of that record in my hands, when I was in a recordstore in Osaka/Japan and a little bell rang in my head, that I heard that name "Scorpion" somewhere before. But as I allready had a whole bunch of records selected to buy, I left it there - BAAAAD CHOICE!!!!. Later I found out through the SD-Forum, that I missed your album. YEAH! It took me another four month to find it in a recordshop in the UK!

BTW I'm still waiting for you and the other RE-boys returning to Europe - your beer is waiting in the fridge!!! :-)

DARIN,
I'M AMAZED THAT YOU FOUND TWO COPIES OF THE "SCORPION" ALBUM.THERE COULDN'T BE MANY OF THOSE AROUND,ANYWHERE.THEY ONLY RELEASED 50,000,AND THE MAJORITY OF THEM CAME BACK TO TOWER RECORDS WHEN THE CO. FOLDED.

BTW YOU MIGHT NOT BE AWARE,BUT I AM NO LONGER WITH R.E. I'VE JOINED THE "FUNK BROTHERS".I'M SURE WE WILL BE DOING A EUROPEAN TOUR IN THE FUTURE,SO KEEP IT CHILLIN.
RAY

I'M HEADING OUT FRIDAY TO CALGARY,CA.
THE NEXT GIG FOR THE FUNKS IS IN THE OLD HOME TOWN AT CHENE PARK,ON THE DETROIT RIVERFRONT.

Hello Ray,

I was aware that you joined the Funk Brothers, but I didn't figure you left RE entirely.

I'll keep an eye on the FB scedule, hopefully you'll be playing somewhere in my area.
You can bet that I'll be there!

BTW I think the copy I'll have of the Scorpion album could be some kind of re-issue, as there's no mention of Tower-Records, instead it has the label named "Breeder Backtrack", but it contains the original ST 5171 number....

CALEB,
IT WAS A TOUGH DECISION,BUT MY R.E. DAYS ARE OVER.IT WOULD HAVE BEEN IMPOSSIBLE,SCHEDULE WISE,TO KEEP BOTH THINGS GOING.THEY HAVE A NEW MEMBER THAT HAS PLAYED SEVERAL DATES WITH THEM.
I WISH THE GUYS THE BEST,AND CONTINUED SUCCESS.

DARIN,
THAT MAKES MORE SENSE,THAT IT'S A RE-ISSUE.IT MAY EVEN BE A BOOTLEG.TOWER RECORDS WAS A SUBSIDIARY OF CAPITAL THAT FOLDED SHORTLY AFTER THE RELEASE OF THE "SCORPION" ALBUM.IT WAS A SHAME,BECAUSE THE ALBUM NEVER HAD A CHANCE.
WHATEVER YOUR COPY IS,AT LEAST YOU FOUND ONE.

Ray, you're pronably right about that Breeder
reissue of the Scorpion album being a bootleg - I
seem to recall a Breeder label that started up
in the late eighties issuing reproductions of rare
psychedelic albums - looks like they may still be in business.

Have fun in Calgary - we'll doubtless have more questions for you when you get back - like
how did working with Tate Vega come about ?

DAVIE,
TATA VEGA WORKED WITH US ON "GRAND SLAM" IN 1978.
OUR PRODUCER JOHN RYAN THOUGHT IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE SOME FEMALE BACKROUNDS AS WELL AS THE GUYS.SHE ALSO SANG A CO-LEAD WITH PETER ON THE ALBUM.
BY THE WAY, THE CALGARY DATE WENT GREAT!!
WE'VE GOT A NEW SECOND DRUMMER,SPYDER WEBB.HE'S FROM DETROIT AND HAS KNOWN URIEL FOR A LONG TIME.THEY EVEN PLAYED MANY SESSIONS TOGETHER.AS A MATTER OF FACT,I PLAYED ON SEVERAL WITH HIM TOO.THE TWO OF THEM SOUND GREAT TOGETHER!!THEY REALLY KICK!

STEVE,
SORRY ABOUT NOT GETTING BACK TO YOU SOONER.OBVIOUSLY,YOU FOUND OUT ABOUT THE DATE.
THAT'S GOING TO BE A GOOD ONE!!

CALEB,
RIGHT ON BOTH COUNTS.THERE'S MANY PROJECTS AND SHOWS IN THE WORKS. MORE LATER.

My fave Rare Earth memory is my family at the dinner table one night many moons ago. I'm trying to show my little sister how to reproduce the opening cymbal work to "I'm Losing You" with 2 shisk-a-bob(sic) sticks and a plate, while at the same time trying to teach my mother how you can use your hand to recreate an echo chamber for the opening vocals (your love is fading fading fading...) so that I can pluck out the bass line on a 2 string guitar (E and B) that I found in someone's trash.

Huge R.E. fan here..."Ma" & "Big John" were HUGE !! Favorite R.E. memory: Seeing them "live" on Midnight Special or "Don Kirshner's...". That performance was all EVERYBODY talked about that week-end and @ school on Monday !
