at least i think it's jimmy ruffin....chorus is "i've gotta cover a whole lot of ground before the sun goes down" (repeated many many many times during the course of the song). i've got it on an unmarked tape...no idea whether it was released (i'm thinking not). does it ring any bells? or maybe you know it by someone besides jimmy ruffin? thanks, m |

Hey, the song isn't Jimmy Ruffin, it's "Downtown Soulville" by Chuck Edwards. |

It is Jimmy Ruffin and it is clearly unfinished. My records show that it is called "I Gotta Cover A Whole Lotta Ground" and it was recorded in the winter of 1970. Produced by Clay McMurray. |

hmmm. so never released in any form? though it seems a little unfinished, it does have a bit of polish to it: female backing chorus, etc. thanks for the info, john. |

John - why is it unreleased? It should be. Does Clay remember it? It sounds like a Dean/Weatherspoon composition. Very nice. I wonder if Mr Ruffin remembers the session. |

yES IT IS DEFINETLY AN UNRELEASED TRACK AND SOUNDS AS IF IT WAS RECORDED AROUND ABOUT THE SAME TIME AS TRACKS LIKE--JUST BEFORE LOVE ENDS--ON THE WAY OUT,ON THE WAY IN,--WHICH WOULD BEAR OUT JOHD,S DATE OF ABOUT 1969/1970.I CAN,T CONTACT JIMMY AT PRESENT AS HE IS NOT AT HIS LONDON HOME BUT IS ON AN EXTENDED TRIP TO THE DEEP SOUTH(I BELIEVE).BUT THIS DOES CONFIRM WHAT JIMMY ONCE SAID TO ME THAT HE RECORDED SO MUCH STUFF AT MOTOWN THAT WAS LEFT IN THE CAN,WITNESS THE EMERGENCE IN THE LAST DECADE OR SO OF THINGS LIKE----SHAKE HANDS WITH A DREAMER,HE WHO PICKS A ROSE,IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD,I GOTTA LET YOU GO etc. LOVE AND STUFF TO ALL Tony.C. |
