Hi this is Kev-Lo It's hard to remember every classic soul act that came out in the 60's and 70's.90 percent of the time we only remember the most popular acts that made big hits. But then there were some acts that were out for a short period of time and made only 1 or 2 cuts or they made songs that just did'nt get much play. THE DYNAMICS had two cuts the first cut was back in 1966 called YES I LOVE YOU and in 1969 they came out with THE ICE CREAM SONG which had some real sweet soul harmony and was a serious smash in Detroit. BULL AND THE MATADORS was from ST.LOUIS.This funky trio had a up beat funky cut in 1968 called THE FUNKY JUDGE which was big on the soul charts. Does anybody have any info on these two classic soul groups and their whereabouts |

The Dynamics out of Detroit worked with Harry Balk on Big Top Records. They also were on RCA, as The Dynamics, and Zerben Hicks and The Dynamics. They were also on Top Ten Records, and later on Cotillion (recorded in Memphis (or was it Nashville) but with a Detroit flavour). "Yes, I Love You Baby" on Top Ten 100, was a Northern Soul smash hit. The Dynamics record on Wingate was a misprint. It should have read "Dramatics". There was also an East Coast group and an L.A. soul group in the '60s, with that name. There were a few others, also (I think one from Texas and one from North Carolina or Georgia). I have no idea where they are now (but the, I have no idea where ANYONE is now! I have enough trouble keeping track of where I am! |

The various groups groups called the Dynamics were discussed at huge length about a year ago but unfortunately, for the time being anyway, the archives for that time are unavailable. I don't have the energy to go through the whole thing again - it was a huge thread - but Robb's post is correct. The only thing I'd add is that they were still active in the early seventies, recording a half dozen or so singles and an album for the Black Gold label which is thought to have been at least part-owned by Aretha Franklin's ex- husband / manager Ted White. There's a CD issued in the UK by the Sequel label which compiles all their Black Gold tracks including a few that were unissued at the time. I've wanted to hear their Cotillion material for a long time - it's surprising that,as far as I can tell without a lot of checking, not one track has surfaced on CD. There were at least eight different groups called the Dynamics - probably more. As for Bull and The Matadors very little is known about them but I can add that when Toddlin' Town, the label that issued "Funky Judge" closed its doors Bull resurfaced about a year later (1970) on Bell with a single credited as "Bull and The El Capalaras". Probably recorded independently and purchased by Bell. Unless he's been going under another name he doesn't seem to have recorded since then. Davie |

Juice, I'd forgotten about that - I never even think of buying sets like that as I usually have at least half the tracks elsewhere so I've got a bit of a mental blind-spot for box sets - unless I see them going dirt-cheap. Actually I'm quite partial to most things going dirt cheap - must be my canny Scottish roots :-) |

HI Davey; 'The Realistics' had a hot record out in 1966 "Please Baby Please" (begging not to leave record)!!LOL!! I think they were from Ohio and had the same record out under another name like 'The Superlatives' or something like that. "RD" knew alot about them but he never came over to the new registered forum. S.S. |

I am surprised no one mentioned the "Detroit Emeralds" who penned the song back in the 70's "You want it, You Got It" or the Ron Banks and the Dramatics. Now I have a favorite song from them, 2 to be exact, "Thank You For your Love" and Just Shopping". Some one mentioned Enchantment. I turned this young DJ on, over here in Korea, to one of my Vocal Groups of the 70/80's discs and he won't give it back. He plays it for the old heads on R7B night at one of the local clubs. We kick back and reminisce about where we were when the track came out. |

Soul Sister and Harlem_144, ya'll taking a brotha waaaaaayyyy back with some of those groups you listed. I'm gonna have to go in my shed and pull out my record boxes. You know the interesting thing about it is that , alot of the singers from those lesser known groups went on to sing with more well known groups too. 2 that comes to mind are Sammy Strain from the original Little Anthony and the Imperials sang with the O'Jays for a number of years before going back to the Imperials and Glen Leonard who replaced Damon Harris in the Temptations sang tenor for the Unifics back in the day. |

Hi Davie. I seem to remember that Bull, of Bull and The Matadors recorded under his real name both before and after that group. And he was in a local Chicago group in the early to early-mid sixties. He also lead another group after his time in the limelight. Unfortunately, I can't remember his real name, or the names of the other groups. I believe the Bell issue was a master purchase, and the recording was done in Chicago. At that time, Bell had deals with several small Chicago labels (hence The Emotions' "Smokestack". recordings. LaCiny and some other labels had deals. |

Robb, his real name is Jamell Parks - it doesn't ring any bells with me. The other members were Milton Hardy and James Otis Love. The info. comes from Robert Pruter's "Chicago Soul" based on an unpublished story on the group by Wayne Jancik, the guy who wrote "The Billboard Book of American Singing Groups" (an excellent book). Bull and The Matadors were from St.Louis not Chicago. I agree that the Bell release was more than likely a one-off master purchase - there wasn't a follow up that I've ever heard of. Maybe one of the forums for funk collectors knows more about them - if I can find the time I'll try to post a query. Davie |

Hi Soul Sister, thanks for getting back to me about the Realistics. So it's the "Please Baby Please" group you're talking about. Yes, you're right RD did write about them - lost in the cyber-space. They were from Cleveland and their real name was the Sensations - they had half a dozen singles on the local Way Out label in 66 - 69. THe issue of "Please Baby Please" under the name "The Realistics" was years later, in 1970, for New York's DeLite label (home of Kool and The Gang) - how that came about is one of those record biz myteries, if I remember rightly Andrew said the group themselves knew nothing about it and were surprised to find out one of their records had been issued by a label they 'd no dealings with four years after it had been a local hit. "Soul Harmony Singles" gives the group's line up as Roosevelt "Rico" Simmons - lead John Washington Joe Kelly Chester Florence "SHS" says Simmons was formerly a member of the Sesations on Argo and Junior but I think that's a mistake - the Sensations who recorded for those labels was the Philadelphia group, fronted by Yvonne Baker who had hits with "Music, Music,Music" and "Let Me In" back in 1961. The "Please Baby Please" group had the following releases : - Way Out 1047 (1966) THE SENSATIONS I Won't Be Hurt / Get On Up Mama Way Out 5947 (1966) THE SENSATIONS Please Baby Please / Too Shy Way Out 1000 (1968) THE SENSATIONS Lonely World / Find Myself Another Girl Way Out 1003 (1968) THE SENSATIONS I Guess That's Life / Oh Girl Way Out 1005 (1969) THE SENSATIONS Two Can Make It / It's a New Day Way Out 2005 (1969 ?) THE SENSATIONS Demanding Man / Gonna Step Aside De-Lite 528 (1970) THE REALISTIC'S Please Baby Please ? Too Shy I don't think I've evr heard any of their records but since you think so highly of them I'll keep an eye out for them. Now who were the Realistics who did "Brenda, Brenda" for Loma in 1968 - questions, questions, questions ! LOL Davie |

Hi Spyder, The Precisions on Drew - a fine group. I remember buying "If This Is Love", their only release in the UK, as a fifteen year old schoolkid - still a great record. Wasn't their some talk just before Arthur's death that a CD compilation was in the works ? And just how many groups were there called the Precisions - looks like at least four to me. Davie - not to be confused with anyone of the same name :-) |

Hi Davie; Your information was good. Yes, that IS The Realistics I was talking about. One peice of your info. was "incorrect" as they did first have that record out under The Realistics in 1966, I know where I was when it was big on the east coast radio from N.Y. to D.C. I know I'm not off on the timeline. If it was issued in 1970, then that was a re-issue. I wish "RD" were here to clarify the correct dates but I can find out for sure on saturday and will report back. S.S. |

Hey Kev Lo, Soul Sister & Kenneth ! The Realistic song, " Please Baby, Please" with flip "Too Shy", that you're talking about Soul Sister was issued on Delite in 1970. Also their were two Realistic group, this group and the one that was featured on the Brunwick label. The Brunswick Realistics group had a cut in 1973 called, " You're My Sweet Chocolate Drops". So there were two Realistics. That Joe Valentine song is hot ! Hope things are well with you ! Take care, Mike Boone (Chancellor of Soul) chancellorofsoul.com |
