Morning All, Which Gospel songs fire you up on a Sunday morning - or at any other time? I am listening to Edwin Hawkins this morning and he does it up - doesn't he? "Oh Happy Day" "God Is A Good God" http://afgen.com/gospel.html |

Anything by Johnny Jones, The Swanee Quintet, Tommy Ellison, Joe Ligon and the Clouds Of Joy, to name just a few. Check out the shows I do, I always feature a rare soul/gospel track.. and there is an awesome one planned for the next show. I say soul/gospel, which is the style I love..as long as there are not too many 'Hallelujah's and 'Praise Him' etc. This style has given me immense pleasure over the last few years Regards Barry |

Hi Bobby! I just checked and noticed that I don't have God Helps Them Who Help Themselves. I'll start looking for it. My main material on the Gospelaies is from the 50s and 60s (albums like Just Faith, Camp Meeting, Bones In The Valley, Can I Get A Witness and a later one, Two Sides Of The Gospelaires) + 12 Peacock singles (50s & 60s). Recently SisDetroit - where are you? - kindly made me a cd-r of Peace In The Valley and the Bill Allen & the Gospelaires cd. Best regards Heikki |

Hello again lovers of gospel! I posted previously saying about "Come By Here Lord" as a way to starting a sunday morning. If we speack about favorite arists, wihout doubt Mighty Clouds Of Joy are my favorites. Hey, Heikki and Handsome, I likes also the little I got by Gospelaires of Dayton (Ohio). I believe one time one of my fave deep soul vocalists, OV Wright belongs to this group. Also, Destruction, I believe The Caravans you mentioned it's the same group where sang Loleatta Holloway. Appart of these considerations i got some gospel-soul favorites as: -"A Prayer" O'Jays -"Caravan Of Love" Isley-Jasper-Isley -"Run Jessie Run" Rev. James Cleveland, Lou Rawls & Phyllis Hyman -"Prayin'" Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes Peace & Soul Food |

Hey Western and Eastern Union Mans! Hi, Mr. "Electronic", I don't have my vynils here and don't remember the titles of the Gospelaires songs. They are in a 2 X LP called "Black Gospel" on MCA (Gospelaires, Clara Ward, Sister Rosetta Tharpe,...). I'll cheking this night at home and says to you. If I well remember you have told that you have produced some Gospel music appart from the Gospelaires. Hi, Handsome, Hope you're so well as i am or better (except for the vey hot temperatures!) One time, at the first 80's i have had a doubt: I have had in my hands, in a second-hand store one album by Gladys McFadden wtih a nice woman dressed as the XIX century in a old car in the cover photo. The title: "Soul & Gospel". I don't buyed it and ignored if i missed a very good album or not. Somebody knows something about? Peace & Soul Food |

Hi SDF (handsome), I had in mind another Gospelairs, out of Dayton, Ohio - not the early Drinkards incarnation. I guess there must have been a lot of groups by the name of the Gospelaires, but not so many that actually had records out. As a matter of fact, I've written an article of the group way back in 1973, where it says that the group was founded in 1954 and was signed to Peacock in 1957. The first single was Just Faith. Hi Manny, how is life in sunny Spain? I don't think O.V.Wright was a member of the Gospelaires. Of his early days I know of the Four Harmonaires and the Sunset Travelers. He's also said to have been a member of both Spirit Of Memphis Quartet, and the Highway QC's, but most probably he only toured with them together and performed on stage with them, but never was an official member. The connecting factor was the Peacock stable. Best regards Heikki |

When I produced and wrote for the Gospelaires, the lead singer was Rev. Charles mc Clain and they were on Savoy. By the way, why are Gospel groups still called 'quartets' or 'quah-tets' in the southern vernacular even when they have five or six members? |

Hello again, Mighty Lovers Of Gospel! Hello, Mr. "Electronic", I checked my double vynil last night and these are the two titles by Gospelaires: "Remember Me Jesus" and "Joy, Joy, Joy" (I believed have more than two!). Also I remember Bobby Martin and Phil Hurtt have produced some gospel artists (for have read it in some web-sites). Hey, "Brass" Destruction, thanks for your info. I have also some tracks by Innez Andrews and by James Cleveland only the one i mentioned in PIR (with Lou Rawls). Hey, Heikki, it's envoyable the cold climatologie of your country, compared with the mine! Probably you're totally correct about OV Wright, thanks for your explanations! Peace & Soul Food |

Hello Everyone. Thank you Heikki for thinking of me. I guess no one else missed me except you. My computer was down. I burned it out. LOL The Salem Travelers are from Chicago, Illinois. Initially, they were Arthur Davies, Robert Dixon, Bill Ford, Chester Feemster, Samuel Hanchette, and Talman Thomas. All of these gentlemen could lead. Arthur, Robert, and Chester were the main leaders. Subsequently, at least three (Davis, Feemster, Hanchette) have deceased. Robert Dixon is the only original Salem Traveler who continues to sing and has a new set of members. They were here last week, and Robert sounds as great as he always has. His voice kind of put you in the mind of Johnny Taylor, and Willie Rogers of the Soul Stirrers. I have three LP's and a couple 45's by them. One of the 45's is "Thank You Lord," a song which sold me on The Salem Travelers. The other 45 is "Children of the Spirit." "Give Me LIberty Or Death." Checker LPS-10043 Recorded at Tel Mar Studios in February 1968. "Children Gone Astray." Checker LPS 10081 (no date shown) "Wait On The Lord" ABC Peacock - PLP 59214, 1974 I do have a compiliation CD of their best, and a copy of their latest cd which I purchased from Robert last week. The Mighty Clouds of Joy is my alltime favorite gospel group. I love so many gospel groups. Johneflat: I've had the Rance Allen DVD for about three weeks and have not had the chance to watch it as of yet. I guess I will watch it tonight. Those Williams' Brothers are just out of sight. They do everything, write, produce, sing, and play instruments. One of them, either Melvin or Doug produced one of the Temptations songs "Broken Pieces." |

Is Eddie Ruth Bradford's, "Too Close to the Mirror" getting played in your area? We just started a female quahtet at my church that includes yours truly and we have 3 powerhouse songs in our repetoire thus far which are: "Too Close to the Mirror", "God Did It" by Evelyn Turrentine-Agee & the Warriors and "View the City" by Rizen. The last two are powerhouse songs and we kinda (ahem) rock the house. |

Has anyone mentioned Candi Staton? I have a fantastic album by her at home (80's I think, blue cover, with CS on the front). Must dig it out. Another great Gospel artist is Mary Love Comer. THE Mary Love. Has anyone heard "Sandbox". Fantastic! I bought about 20 gospel albums from Tower Records in Glasgow for the grand total of $4. Lots of good stuff which I must look at again. The sale was made by weighing the vinyl for some strange reason. Eli, I'm sure one of them was by Rev Charles McClain. |

Heikki - Thank you for the welcome. The lead singer of the group was the late Jean Reed (Her husband sang with the early Violinaires, and her son sang with The Evereadys.) Nosey - When you are ready to perform in Detroit, let me know. I will get you in touch with a couple promters. BTW - One of our gospel promoters has the same name as the well known Ambassador of Soul, DAVID NATHAN. Hollywood of Fashions cater to gospel groups. For those of you who visit the City, and want to know about black gospel quartets, visit David Nathan's Store. |

Yes, it is the "Real" cd with the then unknown Smokie Norful on it. Where are you on the photo? Also, I know Alex Ward, one of the producers. I was telling him that I believe that the change of style was a bit too drastic for the old Tommies fans but I believe that "Lord & King" could have been a hit with the right promotion (considering the popularity of praise & worship). |

Hi Justin! The Charles Williams I knew and I've talked to here in Finland didn't record or perform any gospel while staying here. On some tracks on his album there's a kind of an "universal love" message, but on his shows he mainly performed funk and even rock-orientated music. I wonder what happened to him. Best regards Heikki Best regards Heikki |

Morning All, Mel - thanks for those pics. They are great. One of my all time fave Gospel songs = and believe it or not (LOL!) is "This Little Light Of Mine." I just heard it on yesterday - and I was just singing along. My grandmother used to love that song. And she knew all the words. In my mind's eye - I can see her stepping with the choir on that song. LOL! "LET THE LIGHT SHINE" |
