Bobby, No disrespect meant but, why Denny Terrio??? That guy gives me nightmares still. His show sounded the death knell for Disco, as he embraced & played music the was the antithesis of good Disco music. Can you say Beautiful Bend & Boogie Motion??? (Looks like one more for the Errggh thread)The music that he played is what made people say that Disco sucked. Please ask T.J to rethink the Denny Terrio part of the equation. Bobby, we were there playing the real Disco music. Please explain the history to T.J. Denny didn't know MFSB. Denny didn't know The Modulations. Denny don't know Diddley.......Bo that is...Platform shoes.....mirrored balls (Message edited by juicefree20 on August 08, 2004) |

The only recording I've heard by Anita Ward is 'Ring My Bell'. Based on the vocal performance she gave on that particular record I've always considered her a mediocre vocalist. I could be wrong though. Has anyone heard anything else by her besides her one hit 'Ring My Bell'? Did she have any hidden gems on her album? Could she actually sing? |

Hi Rodmann! I like Anita Ward a lot. Ring My Bell gives you a totally wrong idea of her talent. She has a very good, high voice (somewhat reminding me of Deniece Williams), and there are many great ballads on her two albums, Songs Of Love and Sweet Surrender. Best regards Heikki |

Thanks Heikki. I read her allmusic.com biography after I wrote my last post and they also explained that she had a few excellent ballads on her debut album and that 'Ring My Bell' was not really her style. I'll be on the lookout for more material by her. |

Rod, Anitas' second single was a Disco cut called Don't Drop My Love. It was along the same vein as Ring my Bell. I never did get any of her LPs, so I can't comment on her overall cuts. I seem to recall a B-side of hers called Make Believe Lovers which was kind of a mid tempo mellow Disco song. What always surprised me about Anita, was that Frederick Knight wrote & produced Ring My Bell. When I think of Frederick, I always think of I've Been Lonely For So Long. I was a bit surprised because Ring My Bell was such a departure from that song & style. But, then again, I only knew of Frederick from that one song. We didn't hear much of his music after that song. At least not in New York. |

Juice: Frederick Knight wrote "Ring My Bell" for himself, but as the story goes, decided to flip the script and record it from a school girl's perspective and with her exuberance. (You know how teens can monopolize a phone...) He did later record "Ring My Bell" himself, putting his slow southern delivery to use once again. BTW...WRT "I've Been Lonely", wasn't it the bass vox contrast ("Won't somebody help me please ?") to his falsetto that just made that song ?? (LOL) |

Hi Juicefree20! Frederick is still active. He's mainly working with Malaco these days, out of Jackson, Mississippi. He just produced a few tracks for the latest Shirley Brown Malaco cd. Frederick still has his Juana label and he released a good cd on Keisa Brown a couple of years back. On Juana he concentrates these days on gospel, see http://juanarecords.com but he had plans to record David Sea, too, but I guess they're postponed. I just emailed him and asked about that. On Anita Ward there's more information at http://www.discomuseum.com/ani taward.html Best regards Heikki |

Speaking of Frederick Knight, does anyone remember his single from '74, called "I Betcha Didn't Know That? I remember that song, because my mother had the 45 and I really liked it! Lonely For So Long is a great song, as well as GCS's version. |

1 Wicked!! LOL Yes, I love that, it did make the song, I mean it wasn't the whole song, but that element makes it a hit! I can't imagine how it would have sounded, otherwise!! |

Thanks Juice. Allmusic.com raves about Miss Ward's vocal prowess and says that she had some excellent ballads on her first album. I can't wait to hear for myself. Jimmy, I've also heard that 'Ring My Bell' was originally intended for Stacy Lattisaw. 1wicked, are you sure that Frederick had plans to record the song himself? |

Rodmann: That's what I read in an interview with Frederick Knight while Anita Ward was still riding the charts with "Ring My Bell"...and his version WAS released in a year to 18 months later. |

On Anita's debut album, there was a song called YOU LIED that I remember liking a lot. At least that's what I think the title was. I haven't heard it since 1978. Anita appeared on the Donny and Marie daytime show back in 2000 or so, and sang RING MY BELL. She sounded basicially the same. But since she was singing to the original 1978 track, her voice sounded a bit thinner on the higher notes. It probably would have sounded better if she had dropped the key. I later saw her in person as part of THE DISCO BALL tour. I guess I'm in the minority. I actually like Denny Terrio. I have fond memories of his DANCE FEVER show. My sister and I used to always try to emulate the various couples as they competed. |

I don't have any opinion about Denny Terrio one way or the other. I vaguely remember "Dance Fever", but my musical tastes at that time were in a WAY different orbit, so I really didn't watch that show at all. As for Anita Ward...I really liked "Ring My Bell" a lot, mostly for the production. I love that funky sounding chiken-cluck guitar lick, the drum line, and the way that glockenspiel (I assume that's what it is) complements the whole track. |

Jimmy M, Im not sure if Anita recorded for Polygram or not after the vp passed, but he was impressed with my work with Jackie Moore and since Anita's success was around the same time as Jackie's, and with This time baby being the hit that it was ,I was chosen as her producer . I really would have loved to produce her as I really loved Ring my bell. When I see her on the 16th in Asbury Park I will mention it to her. |

I met Anita Ward at the PBS show taping in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Anita wowed us and the crowd with her wonderful vocals, she can really sing, and oikis such a nice person. Anita and her husband made us feel like they've known us forever. Pictures and stories will be posted soon by Juice, Bobby and myself. We had such a wonderful experience and want to give all of you SDF members a taste of what we experienced. |

Hi Gary, Actually, when we kid about Denny Terrio, that's what we're doing. It's like the ERRGGHH thread. We talk about songs & believe it or not, most of those are songs that we actually have grown to like. We just tease about these records. Most of it's very tongue-in-cheek & of a teasing nature. |

I would love to see a copy of that special featuring Anita Ward. Does anyone know when it will appear again? Anita Ward went to Rust College in Holly Springs, MS, and for a time sang in the Leontyne Price choir. She sang with my cousin and spent a lot of time at their house in the early days. I was so proud of her when she made it with "Ring My Bell". She was like a member of my family. Her first LP contains a lot of beautiful ballads like the aforementioned, "You Lied" and one that I recorded on my debut solo album entitled "I Won't Stop Loving You". The 2nd album, SWEET SURRENDER, contained more covers than the first album, namely, the Supremes' "Someday We'll Be Together," and the big hit from the year before, "I Go Crazy," which Anita steals with her stirring delivery, but has some strong songs on it as well. There is now a cd available in the UK that has most of the first 2 albums combined on disc. In the 80's she recorded tunes like "Curtains Up" and the much covered "I'm Ready For Your Love," (Fern Kinney has a sound-a-like version too) a dance song that was included in some of the stateside compilations that you might encounter. For the most part, it seems our girl Anita is happiest teaching school in Memphis. She tours during her summer break. I hope to have the opportunity soon to see her again and tell her how much I've loved her songs. Another goodie that I hope to cover on my next cd from her catalogue is "Caught Between A Good Thing and Goodbye," a power ballad from the SWEET SURRENDER album. |
