By the way, exactly how often does BET update their info. Once again, they are behind the curve on matters such as this. I'm beginning to consider taking away their Soul pass. I'm hearing it on the news, the radio & on OTHER websites. Surely BET should have a tribute or mention of Rick on their site.

Sorry for venting, I'm a bit upset & totally disgusted that I can't find any info about Rick, on a website that should be on this story big time.

Rick's health had certainly deteriorated in the past couple of years. He looked terrible on the Chappelle show, didnt see the BET awards so I dont have a point of reference. Juice tonight I'm playing his double album of Streetsongs, I'm gonna let him and Teena Jam Live and I am gonna blast one of my favorite RJ tunes...You and I ...killer bass..killer funk......RIP Street Soldier.......

I too am sorry to hear about Rick's passing. Didn't I just read that he had a five or six year old son that he was enjoying immensly? I think it was his only child.

RIP - Rick "The P'Funk" James. You were one of a kind - indeed.

Unreal! :-(

Please excuse me! I was in such shock that I didn't know what the hell I was posting! I'm just finding this out. This one breaks my heart. Anyone that knows me knows that I love this man's music! He had so many classics! It was great to see him get his act together these last few years and I was hoping that he could cash in on the "Im Rick James...." catch phrase from the Dave Chappelle Show. This is sad!

Hi everyone!

Yes Kdub, WBLS is playing his music now & I think that I'm going to turn it off. I don't really want to hear anymore of it right now. For some reason, this really hits hard. Probably because I played a lot of his music when I was a Dj in those days. I know that his health wasn't the best, but I still didn't expect to hear this.

They played a hilarious interview with Rick on the Wendy Williams show. The brother still had that raw edge. I won't even tell you about the topics that they discussed in that interview. He mentioned that he & The Stone City Band were getting back together. The last words that he said to Wendy were that he was looking forward to coming on her show in October.

A news report just came through that he was found in his car, other reports say in his home. I guess that they'll elaborate on this further at 5 P.M.

What I really liked about Rick is that he wasn't pretentious. He reminds me very much of Barry White in that regard. They said what they had to say & weren't trying to be politically correct. They were straight up real & that's a rare thing.

And Rick had a sense of humor that wouldn't quit. I have that same kind of sense of humor & enjoy it!

Man! I thought the dude who told me about it at work was kidding. I just got the latest issue of "Sister 2 Sister" magazine yesterday(I think I may be the only man who subscribes), and they had a nice article about his recent lifetime ASCAP award in it.

He and Dave Chappelle were in the middle of writing a movie about Rick's life with Dave starring. It wasn't finished, and I don't believe the new book was either.

Really sad and shocking since he was about to cash in on his new popularity indeed! R.I.P. King of PunkFunk!!

I don't mean to go off topic or detract from Rick in any way, but I have to say this. This is just another example of why our icons need to put down those old grudges & mend fences. The end for any of us could come at any time, suddenly without warning. Life & time is just too short & precious to waste on feuds & grudges.

If you're listening Ms Ross & Ms Wilson, bury the hatchet & let's get back to business of satisfying your fans. William & Wilbert, please get together & work out your problems. You have an opportunity...NOW to do so. Tomorrow isn't promised. Fellas, time is passing quickly...you need to find a way to work things out. For better or worse, you're family...you're blood. That has to mean something.

I don't mean to single these artists out. We've been talking about them in this forum a lot, so they immediately come to mind. I'm saying this to any & all of our artists who fit here. How many more have to die before someone seizes the opportunity to mend fences?

When all is said & done, are the grudges really beneficial to anyone?? Are any of you any happier about all of this? Is this the legacy that you want to leave behind....bitterness, hurt, anger??? Folks, life is just too short. How many more have to go to the grave harboring grudges, grudges that never rectify anything??

Yeah, I know. It's really none of my business. But over the last 3 years, I've been watching my childhood idols dropping like flies. And I wonder if any of you are paying attention. Well, I'm interested & am paying attention. You see, although I never knew any of you personally, you are a part of my life...of millions of our lives. As such, most of us do care & are concerned about you & what happens to you. We fell in love while listening to your music, conceived children to your music. We've laughed, danced & cried & your music bought us comfort in our darkest hours.

Respectfully, if any of you should happen to see this, could you at least think about what I'm saying here? I'm not speaking as a music fan now, I'm speaking as a person talking to a friend or family member. Am I making any sense here? Is anyone feeling what I'm saying???

Please, stop the madness. It just could be your last chance to do so. Think about it.

Sorry everyone, I just had to say this.

Yes, Juice. You are making making sense here. I feel what you're saying. It's not just some of my favorite singers who are dying, it's some of my family. I know you've heard this, but I've four close family members who did in only a three-month period. Two of them dying in the same week.

I just wish that I could just resurrect some of them, and have them tell me that they're okay. I'd give anything to have a conversation with my aunt Maureen and tell her how much I miss her or wish my great-grandmother a happy birthday. I'd love to have a taste of my great-aunt Esther's sponge cake and tell me how I'm too skinny and I need a little meat on my bones or go to my aunt Cecilia's house and visit my grandma Marie. I wish I could resurrect them and tell them what's been going on since they've been gone. Of course they'd probably would know already. I'd probably like to resurrect Aunt Maureen someday just to see her again. Maybe I will.

RIP, Rick. You'll never be forgotten. :-(

Hello All!!! Juice, well said!! Wow, this year is really overwhelming me, last night I was reading an interview that Rick James had done. He was speaking about how the music is now, calling women B's etc in songs, people not really having musicianship and making a lot of money. He talked about the things that he and other artists of old had to go through(Eli/Spyder stories that you guys know all to well. He was asking the interviewer "are people going to be re-making Eminim or 50 cents songs over No! He said that Frank Sinatra was around when he was 3 yrs old, he must be in his 80's now. I don't know if he forgot that he has passed or if he(I tend to believe) that he was, speaking on Sinatra's longevity. When I got up this morning to go to work, I was listening to the radio and the dj was reading part of this same interview that I had just read last night. He was commenting on how the things that Rick was saying about the industry
was true, that he was making sense. When He got to the part about Sinatra, he made a mountain out of a molehill! He made a snide comment about Rick not making sense when he said that Sinatra was in his 80's now and then called Rick a "Crackhead!!" I said to myself, that was uncalled for. Sometimes people just need to report the news and not add their personal 2 cents to every freakin' thing. This is the 2nd time I've heard him refer to someone as a crackhead. When I got to work, out in the field, I received a message on my cell at about 12:45, from a co-worker telling me she just heard on the radio that Rick James had died and it is breaking news on CNN. As, I was listening to this message, I was shaking my head and saying "No God, please tell me this did not happen!" I tried calling family memebers to find out, but couldn't really get a hold of anyone, my co-worker called me back & I could hear Rick's songs in the background. I called another DJ to find out what he knew and he said he passed in his sleep. NO! I just saw him on Memorial Day, here!
I had been thinking about James a lot lately and praying that he is healthy and how I need to get some more of his stuff on cd. Juice, it is true, you never know when it will be the last time you will see or talk to someone. It all seems so surreal to me in a way, with all of the others we have lost this year, so far, then Ron earlier this week, now this!!! I also started thinking about his family, siblings/children and all the artists and people he worked with. What they must be going through. Teena Marie!!! I thought about you all and I thought about that remark that the DJ had made earlier this morning. I wonder how he felt after he heard the news as we all did! I wonder if he regrets what he said. I'm sorry for rambling you guys, but I can be real sensitve about certain things. How ironic that he said that and then this man passes away. That is another reason why people should just shut their mouths sometimes. I don't like people who pass judgment on others, it simply is not right. On my way home they were playing Rick and I smiled just a little, kinda hard to do after shedding tears earlier. They played my jam "Cold Blooded" and I was good to go, I haven't heard that one in a long time. On BET news, a reporter talked to Kanye West by phone and asked him how it was working with him. Kanye said it was an honor and that they had completed a couple of songs. He said his favorite song was "Give It To Me Baby".
You guys, I miss him already, I didn't know him personally, but he had a realness about him that I liked. I was 13 when I first heard Rick James and the first album of his that I bought was Street Life. The man could write, sing and play instruments, as well as produce others, a TRUE TALENT. I am glad that we were blessed to have him here for a little while and that he went Peacefully. They will be playing his music in a special tribute on Sun and I will be listening.

RIP James Johnson -AKA- Rick James:-):-)

(Eli - Rick's passing was on the local news here in Rochester. Perhaps it's our close proximity to Buffalo, where Rick was from.)

I had met him on several occasions -- he seemed like a nice guy. When he lived in Buffalo, he would often attend concerts, and sometimes was introduced from the stage. There were a few times when he was introduced, that the audience went silent. His 'shenanigans' (for lack of a better word) weren't appreciated after a while. It was sad to see that happen, but he brought it on himself. I wondered how he's been doing lately; I hope that now he has found peace.

Im just through with all of the death this and last year...now 'Slick' Rick James.

man...Rick James...'what a voice, what a talent.'
Every man, at Rick's uprising in music, wanted to *greasely - sleazily* be him, because he sang, said, and did what everyone else would not. It made him attractive to many a woman. Even me.

NP: "You Turn Me On"

It is my only hope that he moved on to the next life with God in his heart.

NP: 'Dance Wit Me'. Classic Rick.

Damn.

More about James Johnson Jr. - a/k/a Rick James

CNN) -- Singer Rick James, a musical icon of the 1980s who helped define the "punk funk" style of that decade, was found dead in his home Friday morning by his caretaker, a Los Angeles police Department spokesman said. He was 56.

James' personal physician signed his death certificate, and said his death was the result of "existing medical conditions," police spokesman Jason Lee said.

One of James' producers told CNN that the singer died of a heart attack.

"Today the world mourns a musician and performer of the funkiest kind," said Neil Portow, president of the Recording Academy, which is responsible for the Grammy Awards. "The 'Super Freak' will be missed."

James became an instant icon in 1981 with his album "Street Songs," a funk masterpiece that featured such hits as "Super Freak," "Give it To Me Baby," and "Fire and Desire."

"I'm trying to change the root of funk, trying to make it more progressive, more melodic and more lyrically structured," James once said.

"Street Songs" went triple-platinum and catapulted James into the forefront of the funk movement.

The album's gritty content earned James a bad boy reputation that he often had a tough time living down. Some critics said it led to his eventual involvement with drugs and a conviction for aggravated assault and false imprisonment in the 1990s.

James suffered a stroke after his release from prison in 1998, months after he had hip replacement surgery.

James was honored in June at the 17th annual Rhythm & Soul Awards. As he surveyed the smooth glass surface of the award, he said, "Years ago, I would have used this for something totally different. Cocaine is a hell of a drug."

In recent months, James had been working on a biography, Memoirs of a Super Freak. It was not immediately known if he completed the book before his death.

Born James Johnson Jr. in Buffalo, New York, James was the third of eight children of an autoworker and a former dancer.

At age 15 he joined the Naval Reserve, but he began missing weekend training when it interfered with his musical career.

James was reported AWOL, and he fled to Canada, where he continued his musical career. The charges came back to haunt him when his success brought him back to the United States, and eventually he served time.

After his release, James went to work with Motown Records, first as a songwriter, then as a singer and producer.

Despite his meteoric rise and recording success, James won only a single Grammy, for co-writing M.C. Hammer's monster hit "U Can't Touch This," a song sampled from James' "Super Freak."

Folks:
This IS a shock to read & hear...
Richard "Rick James" Johnson was indeed one of a kind.
Not only was he a talented funkster, he was one hell of a producer (Teena Marie, Mary Jane Girls, Eddie Murphy, Process & the Doo-Rags, Temptations' "Standing On The Top", duet with Smokey on "Ebony Eyes").

Rick had the guts to stand up to MTV during the early 1980s when the channel refused to air R&B/funk videos (prior to Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean").

Keep 'em funkin' in heaven, Rick. We're gonna miss you.

Dyva, I got a chance once in 80 to speak Rick, when Rick & Teena did a show here at The Uptown. Again later, when he was in town here visiting and I asked him about Darrell Banks. He told me that Darrell was one of his favorite artist and native of Buffalo and we chatted a bit. DyvaNaye, listen to Rick's "Teardrops" from the Throwingdown lp" and Darrell's "Here Comes The Tears" and you'll get the connection. No, both songs are not alike but I hear the influence. A litte tidbit I wanted to contribute-A true true story by the way.

I can't believe that Rick is gone!!!!!! I was reading the post and someone mentioned his son, his name is Tazmen and by now he should be about 12 years old. I am sending prayers up for all his family and friends. I read that Dave Chappelle is in Paris but i'm sure that he knows. He is said to be doing a movie on Ricks life with the starring role. Being that it is Dave doing it. There is no way in hell that it won't happen and it will be done the way Rick would have wanted it. I know Dave will not compromise on it. Also my favorite song by Rick is none other than JEFFERSON BALL. I had the Bustin' Out album for a year or two before I even listened to that song. I have a ex-boyfriend that I taped it for and he had never heard it..........he went the ---- off about that song. Now it's his favorite. Now mind you, I made that tape 3 years ago for him and that album came out in 1979. I don't know too many people that have heard that song but they don't know what they're missin'. REST IN PEACE BROTHER RICK AND KNOW THAT TEARDROPS ARE FALLIN' FROM MY EBONY EYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so proud of the New York media. They have given EXTENSIVE coverage to Ricks' passing. The Daily News did their homework by speaking of his origins with The Mynah Byrds. Here's something that I rarely get to say. I slam them when they're less than attentive, so, I must praise them when they doo good. So....

GOOD JOB NEW YORK MEDIA!!!

Tommorow, Hal Jackson will be featuring a tribute on his "Sunday Classics" show. I would love to see a video show on BET as well...HINT, HINT!!!

Don: That's a great story!!! I'm glad that you mentioned Teardrops, as that was one hell of a ballad & very underrated. Most folks speak about Rick in terms of his funk jams. Many people fail to mention that he made some damn good ballads as well.

How about Tell Me What You Want, his "Duet" with Billy Dee Williams. Or Happy, his duet with Teena Marie? Jefferson Ball, Hollywood, Spacey Love, Summer Love, Gettin It On In The Sunshine, Make Love To Me, Moonchild, Island Lady, Dream Maker & Sha La were excellent ballads as well.

Pretty nice body of work there!
I'm watching the Mets Vs Cards game on Fox 5 & they've been jamming You Can't Touch This & Jack Buck just mentioned his passing. Now that's giving respect!! Big up to Fox 5 & Jack Buck.

Bobby: That's really ridiculous when you think about it. Rick often bigged up their product & in most interviews, he spoke about his love for the blunt. Right there, he added a whole lot to their sales. Hell, the company should have made a memorial billboard for Rick. Philly ain't right at all.

Philly's daily news is so tacky that their fron page has a pic of Rick and in big bold letters it says..The Freak is gone.
They ought to be ashamed of themselves.
Same thing when Tupac died, when it said
Its a rap!
Just awful.
Im sure that WDAS must have said something about it by now.

Your Right about That Juicefree, cause alot of people I know never mention his ballads. I always wondered if Rick we're to put out a lp and called it Love Songs. I believed it would've shot him right back into the charts, and sold a triple plat. One thing about his ballads it would me stop in the middle of my tracks in whatever situation I was caught up in or instead of doing right when I wanted to do wrong, all I had to do was slip on the lp or think of one of his songs. And that was all the doctor wrote..."POSITIVE".

All,

Okay - who made "Sucka For Your Love?" Was it Ricko? LOL! I can't get that tune out of my head today for some reason - and wonder if it is because of Rick's untimely passing. RIP Rick.

Plus - like I already mentioned - I get some artists' songs mixed up. I haven't looked it up - 'cause I know someone here will know if I am off the mark.

If it wasn't Rick's jam - then it sounds like him - doesn't it?

"I love you man, I miss you and thank you for everything you have done for me. I am still here for you. My condolences to your family and I will make sure the legacy continues to go on.

Thanks Eli for that reminder - although - I had completely forgotton that Tenna Marie did up that smasher. That was a smooth hit.

Hey SS. I'm glad to see that you all are home safely. Hope it all went well for you all in the Big Apple - girlfriend.

I've always heard that after having hip surgery - one is never truly right after that. Anyone else heard that?

Speaking of Rick, does anyone remember his 1974 single, My Mama on A&M records??? It pretty much presaged his future Motown work. Back when You & I came out, most of us thought that he was a new act & had no idea of his previous affiliation with Motown as a member of The Mynah Byrds. Most of us also knew nothing of his A&M song either.

Juice I never of his Mynah Byrds work with Neil Young, thru a friend who's all the wat into the rock bag and anything else that came along. LaMorris was the only brother that I knew that had no rhythm. The A&M recording is a new one to me Juice really. I'm still in a state of disbelief.

Oh to one of the girls I gave mention in past threads and Rick I heard took better care of her when she was dirt broke and f--k'd up, I betcha you feel brokeface fool about now. You did it babee most of all I ain't never had no respect for ya!!

Go Get Gone Girl -- Re: hip surgery. I know quite a few people, in their 50s and some much older, who have had hip replacement and are doing very well. They said it's the best thing they ever did. Perhaps it depends on how extensive the arthritic damage is, and how healthy one is going into surgery. My mother had her knee replaced and did better than we ever imagined. Unfortunately we didn't know she was literally full of cancer when she had knee surgery and died two months later. But she went to glory with a new knee!

Hey Re Re,

Thanks for the Cali link. I knew that you'd be on it :-) I'm glad to know that he finished the book & that the book & TV movie will proceed forward. If they get his finished CD out, I'm willing to predict that it will go Platinum easily. I only hope that it won't languish. At present, they're talking about a end of the year release.

Don, you've got some serious connections man. I read some of your posts in the Chicago thread. Good info there. About My Mama, I'll see about recording it onto my computer some time next week. If you've never heard it, I'll find a way to get it to you & anyone else who's never heard it.

Juice, I thought I was up to par on certain things, but you through me a curve on that one, I'd like to hear that single myself. Where did you get it? Hi Arcadia,
Thank you. How did that sponge cake come out? :-)

Re Re,
This morning, the news reported that in addition to his hip replacement & stroke, Rick also had diabetes & a pacemaker. The initial reports stated that his doctor stated that there was no need for an autopsy. Now, I understand why he said that. Diabetes is a monster & combined with a pacemaker equals some serious health issues. It's a shame, I never knew that he had those health problems.

Man, I've got to stop smoking.

I found my best friend dead last year. We had talked the night before and she was fine. She was in her mid 50s. She had diabetes and high blood pressure. The medical examiner had to come to the house and do an investigation, but he said he wouldn't recommend an autopsy with her history. I would think the same would be true of Rick James.

He suffered from what many of us suffer from. Too much food, not enough exercise, and in some cases -- cigarettes. I believe Rick was a heavy smoker.

Wake up call, people!!! Wake up call ...

Linda Di: Unlike many other states, California law requires an autopsy IF the deceased was NOT under a doctor's (immediate) care at the time of death. (And if certain other criteria are met...)

Cali's autopsy law sounds like a good idea. There certainly could be room for error in cases like my friend's death. I hope Rick's results are natural causes. It doesn't matter anyway, but it's less 'fodder' for the often cruel media.

Sue if you go on http://www.rickjames.com you will find the cause of his death.

Also, according to the website, his book was completed as was his new album. No info on the release dates, but are pushing for the CD release by the end of this year. Also, plans for the movie are still going on.

Still crying for him...:-(

Juice, I read that too. I did not know about the diabetes and the pacemaker either! So many things could have contributed to his passing. The body was just tired, it seems. I am glad that he went in his sleep and didn't suffer. It seems that we sometimes lose people right when they resurface again. :-(

No cause of death can be conclusively determined until toxicology reports are in. And they take weeks, sometimes months. It's presumed by his children that he died of either heart failure or he could have had a massive heart attack (likely) or gone into arrythmia (sudden cardiac death) (also likely). Any of these scenarios is likely what happened. And I believe he still smoked which would have been a major factor. As a former smoker (3 packs a day), I tell ya it's a killer. It kills more than all other drugs combined. Sorry to get on my soapbox again, but I want to grab and shake everybody I see with a cigarette. It's more socially acceptable because it's legal. But once ya quit, you'll wish it wasn't legal. It's GROSS and it kills ...

Absolutely I can help you out. It's called Curves for Women! Check it out. When my friend died last year, I had a wake up call -- a loud one. I have diabetes and have always been overweight. I love to eat, but now I try to eat what I enjoy in moderation. And I found Curves - thanks to my sister-friend in NJ, who's my role model/mentor. I hate to exercise. No ... I HATE to exercise. But at Curves, all you need is 30 minutes, 3 times a week. I swear to you it works. It's not real expensive ($29/month). I figured I spent two times that at various driveup windows each month!! LOL

I'm almost at my goal weight and I'm eating a little better (still not good enough). Patti LaBelle's Lite cookbook has some great recipes for our old favorites for when the feeling hits. And it does hit. Hang in there. You CAN do it!!!

It's not dying that is so frightening. It's the diseases that break down our bodies before death that are scary. I'm on a mission to change the path of my journey and anybody else's if they want.

Hey All,

Linda Di. that is interesting. I bought a book at the Tuskegee Institute last week called "The Black Family Reunion Cookbook" from The National Council Of Negro Women. LOL! Dorothy I. Height produced it. She is the president and CEO of the council.

I am telling you that there are some great recipes in it. Dionne Warwick - Patti Labelle - Natalie Cole - Wilma Rudolph - Johnetta Cole - Bill Cosby - Maya Angelou and all have contributed messages and recipes in support of this cookbook.

There are over 250 recipes in it - and just like Medusa mentioned - most of them are soulfood recipes - although there are plenty of recipes that are for balanced meals - with little or no fat.

It is a wonderful book - and I highly recommend it.

Check this one out. "Old Fashioned Roast Turkey w/Two Stuffings" Two? LOL! "Grandma Seldon's Three Bread Pudding" Three! LOL!

All,

Check out this recipe for "Nice And Easy Rolls."

2 Cups self-rising flour
1 Cup milk
1/4 Cup mayonnaise

Heat oven to 425. Grease twelve muffin cups
Combine flour, milk and mayonnaise in medium bowl. Stir until dry ingredients are moistened. Divide dough equally between muffin cups.
Bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes. Serve warm or at room temp.

LOL! Now you talkin' 'bout easy rolls. I love it! I usually make mind w/yeast - the rollin' pin - and the whole bit. Waitin' until the dough rises and what not. LOL!

I am making these - this week. LOL!

On a lighter note - surely God called Rick James home because He was ready to meet him there. Now RJ is resting in peace and surrounded by God's love and goodness. Continue to R.I.P. R.J..

L Di, I'm with ya! I have never smoked, except for when I was little(candy cigarettes) LOL. When I was about 11, I saw a poster that showed healthy lungs and lungs diseased by smoking, that image has stayed with me til this day, I said I would never smoke anything and have held steadfast to it. Not to make anyone here who smokes, feel bad, but I just hate cigarettes, because they have no health value and they sure put a dent in the pocket!!!! I can't believe how much those things cost and some who smoke, complain that they don't have money to do certain things! If they cut that out it sure would help!!! I can't imagine what it must be like to smoke and then try to quit, it must be HELL as well as losing weight for some, so I have sympathy for people with those issues.
Shoot, I'm with you Medusa, food is good, but sometimes we don't know how to push away from the table-LOL, I am glad that my job involves a pretty good amount of walking, because I know sometimes I can add a couple of pounds here and there and that is not fun, when the clothes start to fit too tight!!:-):-) I try to eat right, you can only do so much, I think if we eat in moderation and get some kind of exercise, it really does help. I've been frightened though, as I have seen people riding bikes and smoking a cigarette at the same time. Can someone help me with that one!!!!! Now they are really getting the young people hooked, I saw the other day on the news a report about the flavored Cigarettes, Oh My God!!!!!
Hi Big Sexee, LOL< I thought I was the ultimate Smokey Robinson Fan:-):-):-) I see that you inquire about the same people I been wondering about!!
GGGG- You are making me hungry, I have heard about recipes from some of the people you mentioned, will have to try them out.
P.S. Anyone who can tell me how to post pictures here, will help me out a great deal, I have had my computer going on 2yrs in Jan '05, so I still have many things to learn. I have a Lexmark x63 all in one printer.

I just learned that Big Time was co-written by Leroy Burgess. That tune has Burgess ALL OVER IT!!!!!!

Logg's "Something Else" has the same rhythym. "Heartbreaker" has the same chord changes as "Big Time". "Heartbreaker" also has that piano/four-on-the-floor intro, a Burgess signature. Peace.

Hi everyone,

Hi Medusa: During the interview that Rick did with Wendy Williams that was replayed the other day, Teena Marie had an accident. That was why he wasn't still on tour.

Dinelle: I really need to stop smoking. Helping others get rich, while damaging myself seems to be an exercise in stupidity. What sane person would continue to make folks rich at their own peril. Mother didn't raise no fool, but knowing what I know, I'm beginning to question that. It would be kinda tough to quit, but well worth the effort!!

Re Re: No doubt about that. There is so much that we don't know about. And you know what's up with those toxilogical reports. You know what they're looking for & it sure ain't bacon fat! I sure hope that everything checks out cool. If not, you know what comes next & I'd rather not have to read anything negative.

In his interview with Wendy, she asked him if he still lit up a joint during his show & he said yes, that's what it is & that he still loved Mary Jane. They had a big laugh about it. Regardless, he's gone & I don't really need to have any blow by blow as to why. Rick lived his life on his terms & who knows just what was really going on with him healthwise? Who knows what his doctor told him regarding his health? Maybe he knew that his condition wasn't too good & decided to live his life on his own terms. That's true to how he lived. He made no excuses & made no bones about how he lived his life. I'd rather leave it as natural causes. In reality, regardless of what they find, that's exactly what caused it.

As for the sacnner, e-mail me!

BigSexee: I remember that thread. I sure wish that we had some definitive info about her. I also wish that she could have read what we had to say. Everybody needs love!

Hello everyone, spent the weekend listening to some RJ tunes, his double LP StreetSongs and of course Urban Rhapsody. Rick certainly was the master of the Funk but as noted in some of the posts above his ballards were usually off the scales. Urban Rhapsody was cleansing for Rick, he was mad and relieved to be out of prison, he and Daniel Lemelle made a hell of an album.According to the liner notes he wrote over three hundred songs while he was incacerated.
One of the things I wanted to point out was that Rick had a very unique voice, instantly recognizable and dripping with soul. While riding to work this morning I was listening to excerpts from an interview he had previously given Tom Joyner. He related that "I'm Just a sucker for your love" was written for ...Diana Ross!!! That would have been something.....to hear (smile for me now!!!)

Secondly he added that he and the Stone City band had come out of the studio at Motown and were walking down the hall when he heard this girl singing..he and the band stopped and listened ...because they had been just ignoring her at first......when she finished the song he and the band proceeded to clap and comment on her voice.....he observed that she was petite and white......as only he could Rick asked her the following question: What are you doing here ?

Like P-Funk, Rick brought the funk with some of the most incredible bass lines ever recorded, Dyvanaye you're right "You and I" is still one kick ass jam.

Caught the Vh-1 Behind The Scenes treatment of Rick and he clearly demonstrated the Love he had for his wife and child and the funk.....

This kind on news always busts your face...I had posted in the Temptation thread about Rick James and his appearence in the Standing on the Top video.....dam ......I'm gona miss this brother.

and the band played on..........

OMG, OMG, OMG! I know that it's Monday and 2 days removed after Rick James' death, but I don't care! still gonna respond anyways. I could not believe it when my sister told me the bad news, I thought she was making a bad joke, but to my dismay, it was true. My deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and others who he worked with and whose lives he touched when he was here. It hurt my heart so bad to hear of his passing. The next day I did yard work (long overdue yard work, that is) and I played his "Ultimate Collection" CD the whole time I was outside, but the tribute continued when I turned to my favorite 2 R&B stations on the radio, and they played all of his hits on heavy rotation; I commend all of the stations across the USA for playing all of his hits as a gesture of remembrance of his work and his life. He really cracked me up when he said "I'm Rick James, B!!!!" on the BET Awards last month, taking a cue from Dave Chappelle who made it now a famous catchphrase from his skit about him on Dave's show. But never knowing that his duet of "Fire And Desire" with white soul sista Teena Marie would be his last triumph before his untimely demise. It really makes me appreciate him more now. LONG LIVE THE SUPERFREAK!!!!!

Fave album: Street Songs (will get the Deluxe edition soon)

Fave Jam: 2many to mention, but standout is of course, "Superfreak"

It's strange but nobody ever mentioned the LP he did with his group THE GREAT WHITE CANE... This was between the Mynah Byrds and Rick James on MOtown... I have that LP which is more rock oriented than funk but still seeing Rick on the cover wearing a kind of Lenny White hat with this superb die-cut gatefold cover is a sight for sore eyes...

Juicefree 20,
Thank you, I'll send you a email sometime. I think all we're right all along. Sorry if you all couldn't get thru to email me, it'll be corrected.

Yes, the story is true concerning Rick's health. I knew. But the hip surgery, pacemaker, blood pressure & sugar is a new one to me. Needless to say regardless of his lifestyle and ill health, it was heart failure no doubt. It runs in the family to what has been discussed. It also runs in Ron Isley's family too. There was a miss report that Randolph Isley had passed about 2-3 yrs ago. Come to find out it was bass guitarist Marvin Isley.

I had a strange preminition of thought about Rick 3 weeks ago. I knew with seeing him on TV on all the social gatherings and award shows, that I knew he wasn't going to be with us anymore, and I think he may have known and other's close to him knew it.

On a happy note seen his show in indiana and Rick was in rare form. Midnight Starr was the opening act. This was after he appeared in Chicago already a yr earlier just prior. I wasn't driving so I had to leave. Bkgrd vocalist, writer & solo artist Val Young was so ever gracious a lady of speaking with. Her and Jo Jo do sing quite alike, not really.

About a week later I heard on the news he'd took ill in Dever before finishing his world tour in LA. I was sadden though tooken back by the news of his passing. I have nothing to add to this thread.

Before something else gets outta hand...Marvin Isley IS NOT DEAD!! He has had health related (diabetes) problems and (reportedly) is no longer able to play...but he's alive and doing quite well. Several months ago KevGo reported that Marvin had been in N.Y. supervising work on an Isley's compilation.

Juice, excuse me for my mistyping in my earlier post. I meant to say I do know of the Myna Birds. I think someone was not telling the whole truth about it. I recall that my buddy La Morris at the time played me a 45 and the actual lp of the MB's, which Rick and Neil Young was apart of. On VH1's Behind The Music it was said that the songs we're shelved, how could this be? The single & lp said Motown at least the single did say.

I think I get it now! What La Morris was playing had to be TGWC lp. I recall him saying that members we're a spin-off from the MB's band. And another revelation hit me, was he told me that when his family moved into the house on Aberdeen and said that house was occupied by some hippies, and must have left aburuptly as is. That had alot of underground UK/Phychedelica Woodstock & Garrage Band lp's & singles behind. I spent a whole week over to his peoples house and before he went back to school and his uncles went back to work, we never gotten a chance to finish counting all the lp's. I estimated their had to be roughly to 50-200 thousand or more lp's and only a few few hundred singles.

I think the joint was owned by Abbie Hoffman's underground 7 Crew at one time (laugh) or a record collector who's family may of owned a record shop? He tried to play me alot of the stuff but I flatly rufused, cause it got on my nerve. Also, I seen quite a few many acetates around.

The only r&b/soul/funk him & his uncle had was James Brown. My buddy at the time would only spin maybe like 2 or 3 singles. I tried to get him to play more but relented to. Believe it or not he had every last single on JB made till the time I met him, but had every last JB lp ever made, not the 70's & 80's stuff though.

When and if Wonder B reads this thread he maybe excited on my earlier find. The JB triple lp and the funky drummer (the acetate) being one of them I actually seen first in this extensive record collection, I swear on a stack of bibles. I been unsuccessfully trying in the last 7 yrs to make contact with the trio, unfortunately.

Honoring Rick James:

I sang "Super Freak" at my usual Saturday night karaoke haunt and brought the house down. It was the first time in YEARS I'd sang it and I think it was the best I'd ever done singing it.

Also, I brought my Rick James CD to work today and played it. I'm gonna share it with anyone else at the office that wants to hear it.

GOD BLESS YOU, RICK!!

Best,

Mark

Juice this LP is on the LION label LN 1005 and the date says 1972...
It really is a mixed bag of rock blues soul ... no funk for sure... But still a very interesting piece... for one who loves Rick James.
In the thanks section of the liner notes, props are given to Neil Young and Stephen Stills among others which has to be in connection with the Mynah Birds...

Thanks Don for the update on the JB records...

The Mynah Birds LP was never released. I think that Rick was going through some problems with the Navy (being AWOL) and it was shelved. Someone on the Motown boards was asking for a release, but I think we would never see it. :-(

at the BET 2004 tribute ceremony to Aretha she looked very trim, and look very trim like on the lp cover It Must Be Magic. Her last appearence with Rick she looked ever pregnant.

Nah soul...according to his website, both viewings are public as well as the funeral.

Yeah you're right. I was just watching our local news here in L.A.. They were wrong.

When I contemplated the crowds to be faced, I decided not to make the short drive to Buffalo for Rick James' funeral. The funeral home, which I'm familiar with because it's used by the Buffalo branch of my family, is Amigone Funeral Home. (What a name for a funeral home, huh?)There's an online memorial book for Rick on their website: http://obit.amigonefuneralhome.com/obit_list.cgi

Linda Di,

You may just need to add another space after "website:". That may be why the one you typed didn't show as an url.

Rick was a talented producer, writer, arranger and musician left. and alot of sleezebag and sloppy and some talented musicians knew that and was jealous. I mean no matter what state of condition he was in, Rick still was putting out music while others lagged and still are. The Man was a damn genius-no pun intended, sorry yo.

Don, I agree...Rick was BAADD! Too many haters in the game...Rick was one of the architects of funk and people wanna diss him? And as I have mentioned on another thread, he made no apologies for his lifestyle and still didn't during his last years although he had changed it for the better. I still love his music no matter what!

BTW, one of my band members asked me to keep my braids...I think I will! :-)
