This classic was released on August 4, 1969 as Tamla single 54185 35 years ago today. The song was recorded at Hitsville in Detroit in late November of 1968. Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong wrote the song, Whitfield produced it and the arranging chores were shared by Wade Marcus and Paul Riser. It peaked at #2 on Billboard's Best Selling Soul Singles chart and #7 on the Hot 100. The Funk Brothers played and The Andantes sang the backgrounds. The song was originally recorded by The Isley Brothers in May 1967. |

Believe it or not, this is one of my top 5 records of all time....along with Marvin's version of "I Wish It Would Rain" (which I write as I carefuly dodge rotten eggs from Temps and Gladys fans!). The backgrounds were provided by voices that apparently also included the ladies from the newly formed Undisputed Truth I tend to go for the album version of "Thats' The Way Love Is" with its extended ending and stronger string interlude but I love that US 45 mix with its additional guitar licks. There is another version on Marvin's CD 1990 collection which I play quite a bit these days.... Thanks for the reminder DVDmike.... (Message edited by theboyfromxtown on August 08, 2004) |
