Great performer, great soul--Natural Woman, Its Too Late, I Feel the Earth Move... I love her. I read that she was supposed to do more in Diva finale that Queen Aretha led and the Queen took over and Carole graciously stepped back. |

Hi, Jimmy I likes more the "cover" of "It's Too Late" by Billy Paul. But, everytime I heard, specially, the spanish lyrics song "Yo te quiero, mi corazn", I have doubts: who deserves more the distinction as THE white soul diva, Laura Nyro or Carole King? Peace & Soul Food P.D.: have you heard the tribute to Carole and Carly Simon by Eumir Deodato, called "Carole & Carly"? |

Billy's version of "It's Too Late" was released on his "360 Degrees Of Billy Paul" LP in 1972, which also included a cover of Elton John's "Your Song". Elton himself said that his favorite cover of that song was the one by Billy. Nice Lenny Pakula arrangement. Lenny must have also listened to Three Dog Night's version as well. Comparing Carole King to Laura Nyro is like comparing an apple to an orange. They were two different types of songwriters. Both excellent, but different. |

It's always puzzled me that are so relatively few soul versions of Carole's songs - she's written some absolute killers. Walter Jackson's "No Easy Way Down" is one of top wants-list priorities, I can only imagine how well Walter would have handled that. Believe it or not the American Breed - yes the "Bend Me, Shape Me" bunch - do an excellent version of it which was shamefully missed off their retrospective CD. |

I heard my Grandmother and Aunt play Tapestry so many times between Nancy Wilson and Roberta Flack that I can sing the whole damn thing backwards. I'm glad they did. |

I believe you Mr. Gordon. The other amazing thing about the American Breed is their transformation into Rufus with Chaka Khan. But, that's another story... |

Hi ChiDrummer, I'm sure as a Chicagoan I don't have to tell you this but maybe some folks don't know that Hawk Wolinski, the keyboard player for Rufus, who also wrote "The Medicine Song" for Stephanie Mills, was a member of the Shadows of Knight of "Gloria" fame. There's quite a few members of Chicago garage bands with links to soul. As for the American Breed their second album is one of my favourite cheapo bin finds - cost me all of fifty cents (well 25p if I have to be accurate) Davie |

Yeah Tony, - "School Bells Are Ringing" was supposed to sound like Little Eva, but Carol sang it with a "Calypso (Jamaican)accent". |

Hey Davie, I'll have to ask Lee Graziano (American Breed drummer) about "No Easy Way Down". Maybe he'll remember that one. We work together on occasion. From Lee's own statements...he thought that early Rufus (or Ask Rufus at the time) was a much better band than the American Breed. He left Rufus shortly before the first album was recorded though. |

Carole is also an incredibly charismatic performer live--dont know why she does so few concerts. Wouldnt it be great if she did a tour with people who have recorded her songs--Shirley Alston, Maxine Brown(Oh NO NOt MY BAby), Aretha(well maybe in the next life), Chiffons, etc etc etc |

Steve & Davie: Chuck Colbert Jr (of the American Breed & Rufus) did tell me before I left NYC that there are some unreleased American Breed masters. Sundazed Records released a couple of these tunes on their Dunwich Productions compilations. As for the Breed's transformation into Rufus, many bands from the Windy City straddled the fence between Pop/Rock and R&B. For example, Walter Paradizer of the group Chicago admitted that when the band started out (as the Big Thing), they had to play R&B tunes just to get decent gigs in the city. Kevin Goins - KevGo |
