Hey Satipe!!!

I believe that they're soldiering on after the death of Harold Melvin. If I'm correct, I remember seeing them on a PBS special.

They got a website called simply Blue Notes. If I well remember the only "PIR years" member at the present days is Lawrence Brown. They are a quartet and in this website can view some videos of live performances ("If You Don't Know Me By Now").

What happens to Lloyd Parks, Jerry Cummings, Sharon Paige and Bernard Wilson?

Also, what happens to the original Blue Notes from the 50's and with the Harold's Blue Notes from the ABC - Philly World years, appart from David Ebo, who becomes a solo artist?

Many questions, but the great BLUE NOTES deserves a trhead full of questions (and responses)!

Peace & Soul Food!

Thanks Jimmy & Manny: I knew that this mind of mind wasn't gone just yet :-)

Manny: If I'm correct, Ms Paige appeared with them on that PBS Special. I know that she's been doing appearances lately. Mr Electronic gave us some info on an old thread regarding The Blue Notes. I'm sure that he can be of some help here.

Thank you Manny as those were the Blue Notes I was looking for. I saw Harold Melvin's Bluenotes with Sharon Paige last May and they were good. I saw Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes during the ABC years and had a chance to talk with Harold.

Hello Submarine!

Hi, JuiceFree, brother. Thanks for your info!

Hi, Satipe, thanks to you for starting this interesting trhead.
More I heard "Reaching For The World" album (the first they recorded for ABC), more I likes the voice of Harold, that was "eclipsed" by the voice of Teddy in the PIR years. This album is sadly some undervalued and was the last to appear in Spain. Got a dramatic and mellow feel very different to all their previous material. When i heard the piano intro in "Where There's A Will There's A Way", i'm feel "explosioned"!

Hi, Nosey!
I allways remember that your first post in SDF was about David Ebo! You're a great Blue Notes lover and "conneisseur"! If you have the chance, salute any Blue Notes members you see in the name of a "blue" spanish fan (blue for not have the chance to see and salute in person).

Thanks in advance, Peace & Soul Food!

When I seen Harold Melvin's Blue Notes Sharon Paige 2 yrs ago. She still continues to perform with the fellas, like in the days. I remember her solo lp's, Paige has a gift and a talent. I could never figure out her solo tenure w/ PIR wasn't lengthened. Her singles and lp's sold quite well from what I recall. I wish her & The Blue Notes would do "You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good" in their shows more, cause this song stands up equal to "Hope That We Can Get Together Soon".

its one big convoluted mess just like its always been.
The group you saw on PBS had no original members.
There is another version with larry brown and Lloyd Parks.
They all need to just retire!

Harold Melvins Bluenotes who were on the PBS special consists on Donnell Gilespie, Rufus Thorne (who was there after the PIR years), Tony Brooks, and newest member John (cannot think of his last name). Donnell and Rufus were with Harold before he was ill and passed away. IMO they are the better set as Donnell sounds more like Teddy then any other singer Harold had. And plus Sharon sings with them and she brings the house down on Hope We Can Be Together and YOu Know How To Make Me". Plus this set is managed by Harold's wife.

As far as the other set with Lloyd Parks, Larry Brown, and occasionally Bernie Wilson who left them and sometimes has his own Bluenotes are not as good as the set mentioned above. This set here also sometimes has Samuel Thompson or Thompkins who is also a replacement Delfonic who has been in William and Wilbert Hart's set of the group. I support HArold Melvin's Bluenotes managed by Mrs. Melvin at anytime

I agree with you Bobby & Treble Clef. When they appeared on that PBS special, you'd have thought that they'd channelled the boys straight from 1972. The harmonies were superb & the lead singer sounded like he was lip synching while Teddy sang from behind the curtains!! That brother sounded dead on like Teddy, he was superb!!

I know it and I understand how Bobby somewhat put it, but "What Can ya do?". Harold is not here, Teddy is disabled, only one original left And could teach the guys tricks of the trade on their harmonising. And that cat Donnell can blow his azz off, straight up!!. If the fans want to see them and paid their good earned money (I did) we all should give them & Sharon all of our love & support. As a city of brotherly and too sisterly love for 'em. Bobby, I don't want to come off as being comfrontational, it sounds like it's personal wit alot of issues. I still respect you and love you for your genius and insight on SDF. I've seen this group along with Sharon Paige several times (including the PBS shows) and they are good. They are the perfect dopplegangers. Thye pay much respect to Harold & Teddy and what was..........

Now I dont much care for this Forever Gold CD series that a lot of artists have out now....you know they all have this tag.....original songs re-recorded by the artists that made them famous....well thats not always the case but I have seen Harold Melvins Bluenotes CD in the dispaly case although I have'nt bought it......Last I heard the lead singer was recording his own CD..........

I heard that Kdubya! I picked up some "Chi-Lites" & "Drifters" cassettes that advertized their classic cuts. Well, they were cuts, but there was nothing classic about the music. Needless to say, I felt ripped off.

This idea about artists remaking their classics doesn't usually pan out. Around '81, The Chi-Lites decided to remake Have You Seen Her......BAD IDEA!!! They added nothing to the song & IMO was a waste of a track. I would suggest that classics should be left alone. The only way that they should make a remake is if they can improve on the song. Now, sometimes, there are those songs that didn't do so well, but were decent. Now, if they can update those types of songs, fine.

You'd have thought that by now they'd understand that we don't like anyone playing with our classics, not even the originators!!!

Hey Electric E, I know you wrote some helluvafied songs, like with Chicago's R&B band Smoke City. Where'd you think all those lyrical structures come from? "I want ya"..."Dreams"..."Give Our Love A Second Chance (This time we;re gonna make it)" and "livin' in a world a fantasy"
From PIR's lp inner sleeves, see.
Excuse me for my bad typing you cracked about (yea ya did, I ain't mad at chu) I'm learning other lanuages.

DVD Mike, I had a chance to hear HM & BN's at The Blue Note at 103rd Halsted. The place was so over crowded that they had to open up their doors, because the intendee's we're pouring out thru the door. All my family we're in there front row while I had to brat sit with the youngin's. I was at my aunt's house at 102nd & Green looking after the youngin's bout a block away. So to keep em all quiet from cryin', yellin' & screamin', I suggested we'd all get on our bikes and we'll ride around there and listen to them jam all nite. when Philly came to town it was like a James Brown/P.Funk 3-4-5 hr show, especially when they'd all get feedback from the audience, and jammed on the did. This was round 72-3-4-5-6-7. Anyway, Anytime you had acts like Paige w/ or w/o The Blue Notes, O'Jays, Spinners, Bohannon, Jean Carne, Norman Conners (Starship Band) w/Phyllis Hyman & Michael Henderson, Lou Bawls etc. This is a true story

Don, I once saw HM and BN's and I was one of 12 people watching them. It was 1983 at a soul music club called The Network in Toronto and I only lived a five minute walk away so I went with my girlfriend on a night that had a snowstorm beyond belief. The walk took close to half an hour and when we arrived, we were sure the concert would be cancelled. They played and sang like they were performing for 1200 people! Afterwards, the club gave free food as they cooked for over 400 people and everyone had the chance to meet with the group, chat, eat, drink and have fun. It was a fun evening. Walking home through heavy snow and being a bit tipsy was not as fun.

Don, your e-mail does not work.

Hello Don!

I call myself Satipe on Soulfuldetroit because my mother used to yell that name out when she was very angry at her three children- Sara, Tim and Peter. She would sometimes get so angry that should would combine our names together and Satipe would come out. I am the "ti" portion or Tim. I am a 39 year old inner city teacher from Toronto and have been BLESSED as fifteen years ago, I started a program called "A Salute to Your Musical Heritage" so that students could learn about the roots of the music they listen(ed) to and know more about those who paved the way. Since then, "my kids" have met and interviewed: B.B. King, Mavis Staples, Al Green, Smokey Robinson and Miracle Bobby Rogers, Mary Wilson, Kat Schaffner, Martha Reeves, Peabo Bryson, the original Four Tops, current and former Temptations, Gerald ALston and Blue Lovett from the Manhattans and many others. Whenever I write a letter like this, I always like to mention those like Beans who have passed yet made a special effort to help us; Melvin Franklin, Lavern Baker, Jr. Walker and Harold Melvin.

You come from Chicago and when I was 12-14 years of age, I lived just outside in Glenview and then Paletine (I think this may be spelled wrong so sorry). Since then, we have met with many Chicago artists like Eugene Record, Marshall Thompson, Jerry Butler, Otis Clay and others. Marshall has been ever so good with "my kids" as he visits the school when he is in town and conducts telephone interviews whenever a student wishes to speak with him.

When I first met Thomas Beans Bowles, it was at the Motown Museum in Detroit and he had offered to take some students through as a tour guide and we really connected as we gave each other compliments. He began to call me at home on a regular basis and it did not take long for a bond to happen. We would speak to each other almost every day and when he began to get ill, I would drive down every weekend and then he had an event whereby many Motown stars attended. I was awe struck at first but then Beans became quite ill and then the two of us as well as his 'lifemate' Willie (I LOVE her) stayed together and it hurt me so much as he was in terrible pain. He was honoured at another event and I was invited to speak so I told everyone that I did not care who they were, I just wanted them to help as Beans had become the Grandpa I never had and I wanted him to know that I loved him. A few weeks later, he came up to Toronto with WIllie and we had a great time and what made it better was he visited "my kids" which was incredible! Before he arrived, teachers put money into a 'pool' so that he could stay in a high class hotel and have a room service meal with steak as he lived in virtual poverty in Detroit on Gratiot Ave. He had a wonderful time and I had never seen him smile more!

A few Motowners called me to tell me that Beans had died and even though I had only known him for three years, he had become my Grandpa. He would call when he was in pain or smiling and I always let him know that I loved him. The last time we spoke was Christmas Day 2000 and he died soon afterwards. I spoke at his funeral just before Stevie Wonder but Stevie gave an incredible eulogy that made people smile and laugh and that is how I choose to remember Beans.

I have held "the sax" and "the flute" but even better, I was able to listen to some 78's and 45's with Beans playing. I miss him so much but it is nice to know some people remember him.

Thanks Don,

Tim

Hey Satipe,

I keep hoping that you'll hit everyone with some of those stories about Beans. More people should know him as you did. There's still a lot of love for Beans. You're one of the few people left who can speak for him. Lord knows that everyone else has their mouthpieces.

I always enjoy your Beans stories & I'm glad to see you keeping his flame alive here.

By the way, whatever happened to Kat???

Hi Satipe,
Ol Beans along with The Funk Bros all played on the Vows and early Chicago Joyce Kennedy (of Mothers Finest fame)RAN-DEE sessions, and Andre Williams only produced the sessions, Williams did write "Born With The Rhythm" for (The Chicago) Vows. Mr. Beans played on a Mickey Stevenson indie short lived label PEOPLE and then on Mickey's major/indie VENTURE/MGM.

By the way when I babysat on numerous occasions I heard the smooth sounds of "Mr. Philly Soul" Billy
Paul. I guess one of my main reasons why if I wanted to visit my aunt, cousins and family friends was to go down a block to The Blue Note Club, with me and the kids riding the bikes to get a listen coming outta The Bluenote. I'd do it every time. Those youngin's we're a handful. B.B. King/Bobby Blue Bland, Three Degress, alot of johnny Taylor, Tyrone Davis, Joe Simon and other acts from Chi..."them we're some exciting times".

No Bobby, I'm Chicago all the way. I traveled and been to Philly a couple of times. I can't tell you what streets, routes I went to nor to take. Cause I'm not aware of Philly's scenery. Is this street in Chi?

Don,
When you mentioned the Blue Note, I thought that you were from Philly and in the general area where the club was.

My bad.

Bobby, I had to take a second to think about your question. Ridge street is on the other side of Cicero, way-way-way west in the whyte folks neighborhood. Another street I'm thinking about that's near & around K-Town on the westside, in black section of town. Unless you was on the road and spent your time at one of the affordable motels over there that way?

Chicago I know about all over.

No bad on you. At first I assumed you we're talking about Philly to be honest. I heard of it. There was a Blue Note Club (I was mentioning originally) here on the southside here. You can see on the opposite corner in the Kayne West video
we're he goes to a Harold Chicken Resturant, it's right there on the opposite corner where the Blue Note use to be.

Don,

Thank you! I hate to read as though I am showing off but Billy Paul has been wonderful when talking with "my kids" and I consider him and his wife Blanche my friends. They are both so nice and wonderful people.

Bob Eli,

No publishing company as my sister who is tha Sa of Satipe would hound me. I love her dearly but she is strict (I am older than her too!) and I don't want to mess with her. At some point I would like to talk with you as you know many of my friends and your name has come up a few times.

Juice,

Always good to hear from you! I wrote practically the same note I sent to you about Beans on the "Missing Funk Brother" thread and at first I did not want to do it but I did because of you so take a bow.

Kat and I spoke last night and she is getting ready for her Oct. 11 induction to the Vocal Hall of Fame. We don't usually talk music and usually argue and we did that extremely well last night over family issues.

Hey Satipe,

No bows are necessary for me. Hey, these are your memories & stories. I'm learning from you, just as are many here who may not be as versed in Beans Bowles history & musical contributions to Motown & elsewhere. I'm just glad that you're allowing us in.

I think that what you're doing with the kids is great. I don't think that anyone would think that you're name dropping or any such thing. I only wish that my community had a program such as yours. So much of their points of reference regarding music is limited to Hip Hop & Mary J. Blige & little of the past greats.

Kat never got back to me. I figured that she was still having configuration problems. I would guess that you two were arguing about "Marvin" :-)

Peace!!

Hello Submarine to all,

Hey, Handsome,
until now i've missread your post about "Searching For A Love"! Wow, from my teens this is one of my musical treasures. Sharon's voice, strings, mellow mood, the simply but great "la-la-la" lyrics in the last part...!
We, both, have a great thing in common, loving this Philly symphony, my friend!

Peace & Soul Food (and Sharon Paige performing live in my town!)

There was a Blue Note in Chicago that was a major jazz club. The one that Don mentioned was not the same establishment. The Blue Note was in the Loop on Madison Street between Dearborn and Clark Streets and was in it's heyday from the '40s through the '60s. All of the major jazz artists played there.

Manny, Thank you for the compliment.

DVD Mike, your right it was two places entirely.
The one I recall was the establishment once at 103rd & Halsted. It's a Check & Go chain now.

Woke up this morning after another one of those crazy dreams.......it was three o clock and THe PBS show was airing and I happened to see Harold Melvins Bluenotes, The Chilites, Commodores, Sister Sledge, Yvonne Elliman and Tavares. Needless to say I was singing happily as I made my way to work. It certainly helped me shake a loose these chains and things.........
