Who were the female singers that sang background on Eddie Kendricks' records. They had some nice voices. I was wondering if they were from one of the many female groups signed to Motown at the time. The song I was thinking about in particular is Trust Your Heart. The background vocals really stand out on that song. |

Hi, Soulsseker! The only album I got by Eddie K.(the rest it's all singles, without credits info) is "Going Up In Smoke", where the female chorus are the Sweethearts of Sigma and some male vocals by, among others, Ron Tyson. Peace! |

I know Frank Wilson was responsible for the backgrounds, as he probably provided some himself. I have the Hit Man & Slick lps & , and some of the singers are listed. One that comes to mind is Carolyn Majors-Caston (married to Leonard Caston, I believe). I'll look and let you know, soulseeker. Handsome |

On the Eddie Kendrick's DVD "Dancin' In The Streets", recorded live at the LA Forum, the background singers were 5 males called "Spin-off" (not sure about the spelling). They provided background vocals and some jamming (and sexy) choreography! A- |

If you haven't heard the HoneyCone yet you're in for a real treat - one of the greatest girl groups ever. They'd some huge hits between 69 - 71 including the million seller "Want Ads" which actually topped the US pop charts in summer '71. There's a 2-cd set which contains, I think, everything they recorded for Holland-Dozier-Holland's HotWax label - that's four albums and various single-only tracks. Excellent group. |

Oh yeah I remember the Honeycone's Want Ads. Extra Extra Read All About It Wanted Young Man Single and Free. Thats one line a song that I never forgot for some reason. Didn't they have another hit though. Not as big as Want Ads but I kind of remember another song by them. Okay now I remember. It was Stickup Highway Robbery. I will check out their other work as you guys suggest and a little research on the group. (Message edited by Soulseeker on August 09, 2004) |

Thanks SDF I remembered Stick up after I posted. But yes! I remember one monkey too! Such great singers. I don't recall any ballads though. I really need to check them out. They had great voices. I'm hearing these songs in my head as I'm typing. I'll have to see if they sound similar to the ones singing on the Kendrick tracks. |

The Honeycone cd I was talking about is "Soulful Sugar" (Sequel CMDDD340) - should be available through Amazon. Carolyn Willis did a lot of session work - she was featured on a Seals & Crofts hit in the mid-seventies which I've yet to hear - it's called "Get Closer" if I remember rightly. |

I don't know if she sang on TRUST YOUR HEART, that album doesn't list the singers, just the rhythm section, which included some of the Funk Brothers (Jack Ashford, James Jamerson). Here's some of the singers that I am able to list...I don't have all of his albums (working on it), but hope this helps: Background singers on HES A FRIEND album: Bruce Hawes Carl Helm Bruce Gray Allan Felder Darryl Grant Barbara Ingram Carla Benson Evette Benson Background singers on GOIN UP IN SMOKE album: Barbara Ingram Carla Benson Evette Benson Allan Felder Carl Helm Ronald T. Presson Bruce Gray Philip Hurtt |

Lady Mystique: The "He's A Friend" and "Goin' Up In Smoke" were straight up Philly productions with Norman "The Harris Machine" Harris at the helm. The personnel on these albums would be the MFSB along with the vocalists you listed...but would have NOTHING in common with the personnel from any other Kendricks project. |

soulseeker, I don't think Barbara Ingram sang on Trust Your Heart (flipside to Son of Saggitarius), I believe those were still some of the early singers. That's Shelley Clark doing the co-lead on "Stay .." - it's hard to say who's on the final album - although all three are on the cover Carolyn left after the third album so it might just be Edna and Shelley helped out my session singers. Carolun and Shelley were interviewed for the notes for the "Soulful Sugar" CD and it looks as if Carolyn left around late '71 after "One Monkey". That would explain why the follow up paired two older songs "The Day I Found Myself"/"When Will It End" - probably a stop gap measure while Edna and Shelley tried to find a replacement for Carolyn - something that never happened. But - how does that explain the picture sleeve for the 1973 "If I Can't Fly" single which clearly shows the three of them - maybe Carolyn came back for photo sessions to give the impression the group still existed. It's a shame there's been so little written about the Honey Cone - there are so many unanswered questions. Carolyn Hurley who's one of the background singers on the "For You" album is probbaly the same person who had a 1974 single on Stax. The girls reformed for short time around 1995 for a few concerts - they looked even better than ever. |

http://www.soul-patrol.com/sou l/honeycone.htm So far this is all I could find on the Honeycone. It does say that they continued their background work in L.A. commuting between there and Detroit. I even see Frank Wilson's name mentioned (Kendricks' producer) though I'm not too clear on the time frame. So its possible that it is Carolyn Willis' voice on the song. Well at least I'm getting closer to the answer. |

Handsome,Yes, it was Sharon Cash that "replaced " Edna - as if anybody could. Actually I suspect that the Sharon Cash - led Honeycone didn't exist and that it was a just a marketing ploy to use a trusted "brand name". I didn't get to hear the Sharon -led single until it was included on "Soulful Sugar" - I don't really care for "The Truth Will Come Out" but I LOVE "Somebody's Always Messing Up A Good Thing" - it's not the Honeycone but it is a good disco track - like a tougher Gloria Gaynor. Will have to play it again - the Honeycone CD's never far from my CD player. Davie |
