Yeah Bruce. johnny Johnson doesn't get the props he deserves. As Keith Richards pointed out in the excellent Chuck Berry documentary, many of Chuck's songs were written in piano keys rather than guitar keys, which show the influence of Johnny Johnson. Millie.....Awww shucks.... |

Another cat that can throw down is believe it or not is..Ike Turner. I didn't have to see the MS PBS doctrumentary of The Blues. Another tidbit Turner as a excellent bassist Ralph. |

How I can have forget RICHARD TEE! I likes all his "Natural Ingredients" solo album, specially the piano solo last track, a cover of Mendelshon. Also, who plays piano in "Too Young" by The Miracles, from their CBS "Love Crazy" album? I got it on cassette and don't contains the musician credits. The piano riffs are so cool and jazzy! Peace! |

I remember other's I could not remember. There's a site that airs at 12 midnights on Saturday's that can be listened to over the net. I mentioned it to Soul Sister and to Mr. "Little" Jimmy Scott about it once. It's bluesbeforesunrise.COM. Whoo! Talking about a library of congress, even recordings that go way back. Email Steve Cushen & I bet you all he and staff will email you right back. It seems seem Steve must be getting alot of emails that I never ever heard him so excited before. He's the only cat I know where he'll dig up sessions that even piano players with or with bands, even as soloist. There's so many keyboardist I can't name.... |

Hi Phil, It's a pleasure having you join the forum - I'm sure you'll get hooked on it :-) When you've got settled in you can tell us ALL about the Young Professionals who should've been miles bigger than they were. It's probably just a case of there was just so much great stuff coming out of Philly at the time that not everybody got their just desserts. In particular I'd love to hear your remniscences about the adorable Bettye Swann - her "Kiss This Love Goodbye" is a huge club favourite over here. One of my friends paid around $200 for a copy about five years ago - a great, great record from a hugely under-rated talent. You certainly did her justice - just a pity the sales didn't match the quality of the record. Bobby amazed me when he said you were in the Mohawks and The Swinging Phillies - what, were you about eight years old when you made those records ? You're one of the best preserved fossils I've ever seen :-) Juice, the Mohawks who did "The Champ" are a different group - they were a bunch of London session men. Cotillion picked up the tapes in a leasing deal with a UK label. Nice to see Neil Larsen get a name check - I've been following him since his days in the Soul Survivors - a great talent. Love his "Jungle Fever" album. Davie |

I have always loved Billy Beck's work with the Ohio Players. I think he's very underrated. Back in the day, my friends and I always used to argue about the keyboard players from EWF (Larry Dunn), the Isley Brothers (Chris Jasper), and Billy. I also love Dave Brubeck, Ahmad Jamal, and lately I've been heavily into Michel Camillo. |

Hi Phil, Welcome to Soulful Detroit! It's so good to have a dear friend from back in the day on this great forum. I'll always remember the days at the Dell Theater, listening to The Mohawks sing. Phil, can you recall who were some of the other acts that appeared at the Dell? |

Hi JF, The Mohawks(Phils group) had a great cover of the song Bewitched, bothered and bewildered, on Val-ue and as the Swingin Phillies, they recorded Frankensteins party, on Deluxe, and in between the center lines on the promo copy was a short bio of the group. |

ChiDrummer, Thx, but let me kick it back to you. Your list made me do a double take initially because you included Bobby Timmons, who was a real fave of my father. Two of the three albums that I own by him are form my dad's collection(Soul Time, and i can't remember the other titles). I saw K. Kirkland's name and that immediately reminded me of Marcus Roberts because of the Wynton connection. I love Kenny's work on Black Codes and I've seen Marcus twice with Wynton and bought 3 of his first 4 solo releases. Some were better than others, but I personally like his touch. At a Pier 6 show years back, after a rather rousing solo he jumped up from the piano and ran towards the edge of the stage so quickly, we thought he was going to fall off. He quickly recovered, but then this look came over his face like, "now how do i make my way back to the piano." I don't know if it were staged or not, but it looked pretty convincing....lol. Now as for my man, Pinetop, it must have been great playing with him. I met him after a concert at a tiny club in Baltimore around 1989. I believe he was touring with Little Mike and The Tornadoes. He wasn't 90 yet, but it was in his sights. That still didn't stop him from trying to push up on my date at the time(can't blame him though, she was a looker). He had a great sense of humor and told us quite a few tales of his days hanging out with Muddy Waters. I first met Darryl Davis, who's on my list at that same show. He was sitting in and learning at the feet of the master. I'm kicking myself for leaving Huey's name off. Don't You Just Know It was one of my oldest grand daughter's first fave tunes, when she was less than a year old...and several others never fail to get my girls' moving. |

Oh my word, you guys have covered the bases pretty well. Did anybody mention Bill Evans? And I'd like to add Chucho Valdes...incredible Cuban pianist. His solo stuff is great and the Irakere recordings are lengendary. Great Afro-Cuban rhythms and fantastic jazz that will blow your socks off and you'll be happy for it. Cam |

So many great piano players aready listed. I didn't see Champion Jack Dupree mentioned, however. Bobby - did they have recording tape when Mozart was alive? Or was this Freddy Mozart (1965) on the Shlock label? Oops! I guess we can assume that if one writes great music pieces for a particular musical instrument, - they must have been able to play that instrument well, themselves! |

Manny: Missed your Chucho Valdes post. But I dig his work so much, that it's great to plug him a second time. And third: Chucho Valdes. And fourth: Chucho Valdes. And you are right, Lonnie Smith is cool, too. Is Cecil Taylor mentioned on here? If not consider his hat thrown down on the keyboards. Cam |

Hello Submarine again, Cam! You're so right! Chucho Valds for fifth time: "Encuentro" and "Lo que va a pasar" contains some piano and horn section riffs very unforgetables! I only got "Jeanine" and "Afrodesia" by "Doctor" Lonnie Smith, but i got "enough" for consider him as a genius. Peace & Soul Food |
