Just heard that Ronnie suffered a stroke while waiting to go on stage yesterday at a concert in south England. He is now in hospital in London but no word on his condition yet. Apparently Ernie Isley went on stage alone and completed the show. Let's hope Ron will make a good recovery. |

Ron Isley is in my prayers. They just may be the all time rock and roll as well as soul group-hits in 50s-to now but they dont get their dues.(Ernie Isley to me is a BIG part of the Isleys--phenomenal musician-even the rock press gives him his dues) |

Oh My God! Almost 2 hrs ago, I was on my way home from work and listening to the radio and they played the new song by Ron Isley & Patti LaBelle, "Going Solo". It was sounding good, so I called the DJ to tell her that I liked that. Now I see this news. I just called her back to let her know. She told me to keep her posted. Lord, I am praying that he will get through this & he will!!! Everyday is a blessing Y'ALL!!! |

Charise the exact same thing happened to me I was leaving the Loop on my way home and heard the song yesterday afternoon, Ron & Patti have it going on with that song. I had just read the news here that morning on SDF....funny thing because part of the lyric has them...saying goodbye to each other.....maybe its time to go.....it was difficult hearing it for the first time but it is a nice song. It was obvious that the DJ who was playing the song didn't know what was going on ! Kdubya |

Welcome aboard Karen I was wondering about this report as well, as I couldn't find anything about it. I'm very sorry to hear this. Ronnie has been such a big part of our musical heritage & I still don't believe that he gets his just due. Back in the late 50s & early 60s, his aunt Christine Bell had a beauty parlor on Bergen St between Saratoga & Hopkinson Avenues. My mother used to get her hair done there, where she & my father met the brothers when they first came to New York. Our fellas are held in high regard in my family. I wish for Ronnie a quick & speedy recovery. This is such sad news & I just pray that he'll pull through with flying colors. God Speed Ronnie!!! |

I also wonder why we haven't heard anything about this. My question is...What is Ernie Isley doing on stage? I know Ernie is one of, if not the greatest guitar players of all time...but when people go to see the Isley Brothers, they want to see RONALD..and I can't see Ernie carrying a 2 hour show alone. |

I'd say reserve judgment until more details come from someone talking on the record, not an anonymous source. There have been too many rumors of musicians falling ill that haven't panned out, so I'm always skeptical until more concrete info comes out in places like AP. |

This is really messed up. The eurweb story sites an official at Def Jam confirming the story. Yet, when I went to Def Jams' website, The Isleys aren't even listed under their Artists. I checked all of the label under their auspices. Not a solitary feature on The Isleys. They're supposed to be signed to Def Soul Classics, yet they aren't mentioned or featured anywhere on Def Jams site. Now, someone tell me what's wrong with this picture? If The Isleys did sign with Def Jam, where is the respect for these icons? I see NOTHING about them & that stinks!!! |

I just saw Ron on PBS a few days back performing with Burt Bacharach! I hope he recovers from this if it is true. Juice, The Isleys aren't the only ones who get absolutely no respect from Def Jam. Look at how they did Patti LaBelle. Absolutely no promotion for her latest single 'New Day' or the whole album that matter! Not even a freakin' video! All I saw was an extremely cheap promo that ran on BET a few times back in June. It looked as if it was shot with a home camcorder it was so bad! It's sickening how the way the music biz is today. I had no idea that The Isleys were even signed to Def Jam! |

Hey Rod, I hear that but check this out. If you go to the website, at least thay have her listed as an artist & there's a picture of her there as well. Didn't The Isleys sign with Def Soul over a year ago?? What did they do, misplace their bio, or are they waiting for the CD which was to be released in 2005??? Talk about a lack of respect!!! What really annoys me is why it took Def Jam whatever almost a WEEK to give us any information!!! Didn't they realize that SOMEONE might have reported this on-line. Did they stop to consider that there just might be some misinformation floated. Finally, why weren't Ronnies' fans treated with at least a modicum of respect. We were left to twist in the wind since this first hit the forum, while they said nothing at all. That's a fine way to treat the fans. Oh, by the way...Def Soul Classic, or whatever you're calling yourself these days, you could at least have a PICTURE or BIO on YOUR website about Ronnie, don't 'cha think??? As I started this thread, let me say that I have seen no media report of the stroke incident but I was told by someone who works at the radio station which was co=promoting the event about it. He would not make it up. It may not have been as serious as thought so hasn't made the press. He is now away on vacation so I can't check more |

Mike, There is a media report now -- the link above. And a statement from Def Soul Classics. You have to understand that, you know your friend at the radio station, but for the rest of us, we're used to rumors flying about musicians being sick or dying. Until there's a legit news source reporting it, it's wise to be skeptical. Here in Detroit, unfortunately it's usually a radio station that reports that Luther is gone, or whatever, and people believe it. |

Sue, You are so correct. I work for the USPS & I remember that right after 911, I think it was during the anthrax scare, people were walking around my job crying. Why were they crying?? One of our radio station reported that Whitney Houston had died from an overdose. Remember that one? Then, we had the one a few months back regarding Michael Jackson. What was it, I believe it was something involving a kidnapping? I also remember a rumor from long ago that told us that Anita Ward had died in a car accident. There have been too many of these false reports over the years. Mike: We weren't calling into question the veracity of your post. Another person posted after you did, confirming that Ernie announced Ronnies situation. What I personally was calling into account was the absolute lack of information about Ronnies plight. I was & am still upset about the lack of information given by Def Soul Classics & the lack of information from the media. Not to disrespect any artist but, if it had been a damn Backstreet Boy, we would have had daily reports, right down to the color of his hospital gown & what flavor Jello he had for desert. I think that Ronnie Isley has enough history in the industry to rate a simple mention in the press, not to mention his OWN record label. If you knew about it, I'm sure that at least one media concern had wind of it as well. So, My question is: where were the Black radio stations? Where was BET, VH1 & MTV, those bastions of everything musical??? Where was his OWN record label, a label by the way that holds The Isley Brothers in such high esteem, that they don't even feature them on the labels' website? My beef is not with you. I'm sure that we all appreciate you breaking this news. That's what makes Soulful Detroit great, that was some good inside information that you gave us. Hell, if you were a reporter, you'd have aced out everyone. I thank you for bringing this to our attention. Hell, you were more informative than the folks who get paid to get us info! |

As I mentioned in a previous post, Ernie announced on stage last weekend that his brother had suffered a stroke. Why would anyone still think this was a rumour if it had been confirmed by the family in front of thousands of people? |

If it was said in front of thousands of people, why did it take a week for the news to pop up in the media? Makes me wonder about the much-vaunted aggressiveness of Fleet Street reporters ... Most of us here err on the side of caution until there's been some actual reporting about the incident, with a statement on the record (not from anonymous sources) from the record company or the family. |

Karen, Our basic argument is the fact that his label & representatives were negligent in informing Ronnies' fans. We're not shooting the messenger, as it were. I personally am lambasting Ronnies' record label, the radio stations & all who took nearly a week to report this. The fact that the information was reported by Mike & yourself was a great thing. My point is this: if it was reported accurately by two of our forum members, why wasn't this reported by the folks who are paid to report? Why didn't Def Soul have enough respect for their to release a simple statement. In reporting this to us, you acted far more responsibly than they did. Now, I'm sure that you realize that we've endured many false "first-hand" reports that didn't quite pan out. As such, one does exercise a little caution. Consider this, Ronnie had his stroke BEFORE his show. Surely, some media person must have noticed that something was amiss. That's what we're angry about. Not the "rumor", but the lack of response from anyone remotely connected to the situation. A reasonable person would naturally expect this to be big news in the music community, as Ronnies' "Mr Biggs" character is having huge success with the younger set. When there's no mention of it from the record label, or on Black radio, well, I ask you, how does it look? The silence was deafening & we're reacting to the lack of coverage, not you guys informing us. |

Ron's stroke happened in London. Where was the concert audience of thousands who heard Ernie say his brother was ailing? If it was England, I don't fault BET and others for not knowing about it til now. It should have leaked out the normal way, through someone at the hospital tipping off a local journalist (laugh)...then the U.S. would jump on it. |

Sue, Now you know how the English tabloids jump on stories. I would have thought that they would have played this up pretty big. I thought that The Isleys were pretty popular in England. Sue, am I wrong about this??? |

Hi Medusa, They say that it was minor. He's supposed to be back home & recuperating well. The reports say that it didn't affect his speech. |

Hey Juice, thanks for the update. I was wondering how serious it was and how he's doing at this time. Glad to know it was not as catastrophic as Luther's stroke, but it's still a warning to slow down a bit. |

Hey Juice Just caught up with your comments. No offence taken... I was surprised like you that no one in the media had picked up on it for some time. Started me even thinking it wasn't factual! Must have been a lack of communication between his label and his management/agent. Not good...good though that Ron is on the mend |

Folks: As a radio person and a journalist, I understand how the process of information can get somewhat hampered but it is usually done because factors need to be confirmed with those who represent the artists or the artist themselves. Until then it's sometimes best not to say much at first. I'm just glad to hear that Ronald is recovering & that the stroke did not affect his speech. Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Hey Kevin, That's great news! I didn't hear ANYTHING about Ronnie Isley. The news media is slow in these parts of the country(Philly) I don't think the R&B world could handle another loss like this after the death of Rick James. |
