Geez, all this Spinners bashing...am I the only one who likes those particular tunes here?

Here's a few:
most hip-hop and rap crap
"The Lion Sleeps Tonight" (both the Tokens and Robert John)
"Hotel California"
"Playground in My Mind" (which I heard on the radio for the first time recently in about 30 years...didn't this song get buried deep in the earth and the burial place salted?)
"Kryptonite" by Three Doors Down (I can't believe that Dick Clark, of all people, considers these guys to be the new Left Banke! Is he high? The Left Banke were one of the best and most underrated bands of their time, and TDD is a joke!)
"No Scrubs" (I'm SORRY that I don't make enough money to live on my own, that I don't have my own car...do ya have to have a song to make me feel bad??)
and there are probably loads more, but these just come to mind off the top of my head. Thanks, Count, for starting this thread to allow us to vent a little.

Best,

Mark

Talk Talk-Music Machine I can#t even name 10 "rock" songs but >I even remeber the ARTISTS' names on THIS one-I hated it so much!
Inna Gadda Da-Vida- can't remember the artist
any "hard rock"
Rolling Stones doing Drifters', Temptations' and Miracles' remakes
Flock of Seagulls (is THAT who it was?) doing Gloria Jones' song ("Tainted Love")
Most Rock songs
Commercialised Country & Western (I like traditional Country music and Bluegrass)
Punk Music
Most Rap Music
Songs with TALKING in the middle or beginning (or ending)
German Oom pa-pa-Band music
"The Witch" by The Rattles
Pat Boone COVERS of R&B songs.

This, by the way, is the original, logical and REAL meaning of the term "Cover". People nowadays use it when they mean "remake". A "cover" was intended to describe the situation when a record with a particular song was already out in the marketplace, and another company came along with another artist, and stole that song, and put out that record on a much bigger scale and wiped the other record off the map. That occured much in the 1950s when African American artists had records out, selling fairly well, and even crossing over into the pop market, and the major labels (and some smaller ones too) put out that same song on a Caucasian artist, to make a lot of money. The potential market was twofold: those Caucasian kids whose parents wouldn't allow them to have records by Black artists in their house, and Caucasian kids who didn't listen to R&B radio shows or stations. If a current artist comes out with a 1950s, 60s 70s 80s or 90s song now, it ISN'T a "cover"!!! It's a REMAKE!!!

Just blowing off steam her! I hope nobody minds. I'm just disappointed in what's happening to spoken language during these times of increased machine and computer use, and less reading. Language has become more simplified, less expressive, and therefore more difficult to get across different degrees of meaning. When I was young, oth English and Dutch employed far more words in everyday speech than now. So! Let a woman be a woman, and a man be a man, and a cover be a cover, and a remake be a remake!

Shame on you John Lester! Shame On You! With all of the trash that's been recorded over the years you think that The Soul Sisters' excellent hit 'I Can't Stand It' is one of the worst songs of all time? LOL. That's a jumpin' little tune and those girls could blow! To each his own. :-)

Count, I dislike so many songs that if I listed them all I'd definitely stop the whole damn toilet up! LOL. Here's a few off the top of my head in no particular order:

AMERICAN PIE - Don McLean
TIME IN A BOTTLE - Jim Croce
RELEASE ME - Esther Phillips
THE HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN - The Animals
SUPERSTAR - Luther Vandross
ENDLESS LOVE - Diana Ross & Lionel Ritchie
I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU - Whitney Houston
HEAL THE WORLD - Michael Jackson
WHEN WILL I SEE YOU AGAIN - The Three Degrees
WHEN WILL I SEE YOU AGAIN - Babyface
PREPPIE - Cheryl Lynn
EMOTION - Destiny's Child
SECRET LOVERS - Atlantic Starr
A WHOLE NEW WORLD - Peabo Bryson & Regina Belle
ALMOST ANYTHING WITH INVOLVEMENT FROM Prince, Babyface, P. Sh*tty and Lionel Ritchie.

I purposely didn't list some of the Classic Soul songs that I've always hated. My list would bring this whole forum down! :-)

Robb,
Speaking of word usage, the word "Caucasian" is a blatant misnomer.
Caucasians dwell in the easternmost part of the former soviet Union in the Caucus region, hence the name Caucasian.
I personally hate that word and its association with "white folks" which is also a misnomer.

Now, if you REALLY want to break it down based on that concept, I am technically an African American, as I am a Jew, a decendant of the land of Palestine which later became Israel, which is located in the northeast part of the continent of Africa.
My grandma was from Russia and her decendants were from Ethopia, Ethopian Jews who migrated to the USSR.

My grandparents and my mom, as a child, migrated to the US in the twenties, and so therefore, technically, I AM and African American, and proud of it!

Hello Submarine!

Hi, Nosey, I "understand" you. I'm also a Spinner's music lover but everytime i plays his "Rubberband Man" single only plays the B side (wich is a fave of mine), "Now That We're Together".

Some songs I hate specially (soul, rock or pop):

-O'Jays version of "When Will I See You Again"
-MFSB and Archie Bell versions of "Let's Go Disco" (I've says this many times, but I hate very much. When I likes a artist as these two and i'm deceptioned by...!)
-All by Village People
-All by Silver Convention
-All by Cameo (IMHO, got a "cult" status that don't deserves)
-Many disco-music (except the most soulful and well orchestrated Salsoul and Prelude records, for example)
-Some pretentious singers-songwriters of Folk, who thinks they are "Che Guevara" or got the representation of a "just fighting". They says many things but their music don't says nothing.
-Hard rock, punk-rock, heavy
-Practically all rap and hip-hop (except some experiments as Guru-Jazzmatazz and US 3)
-Michael Bolton
-Kenny G
-Whitney Houston
-The post PIR albums by Teddy Pendergrass
-Nu-soul (where is the "soul"...??!!)
-Dixieland (IMHO is similar to military music)
-I don't knows if I hate Rolling Stones for his music (don't transmit nothing to me) or I hate for his pretentiousity and his bad education

I hate to write about what I hate!
That's enough (by now), friends

You're also autocritical (among many other virtues).
Anyway, I don't have the chance to heard your "Eli's Second Coming". How sounds? Perhaps as "instrumental Blue Magic"? I can't imagine something bad by a Philly master (except "Let's Go Disco", smile!)

I hate most of the songs mentioned in the previous posts, except "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor".

Here comes the blushing bride
The groom is by her side
Up to the altar
He's steady as Gibraltar
The groom has got the ring
And it's such a pretty thing
But as he slips it on her finger, the choir begins to sing...
Does yoour chewing gum, etc...

Nobody writes lyrics like that anymore. Maybe it's good they don't. LMFAO...

Manny,
Eli's Second Coming was my "attempt" at a disco album at the hright of the disco craze.

What happened was , was that I had somewhat of a hit called Love Chant which was a fluke.
It came out via TK records.
After the record took off, two things happened.
First, the label wanted me to put together an album, and I should have been more meticulous in selecting and composing the songs.

Next, the William Morris agency called ant wanted to book Elis Second Coming on a tour.
Problem was, was that was no such group, just the same musicians as Salsoul/MFSB.
I thought about doing the tour with an abbreviated version.
Just think,..picture me coming out on stage with a rod and a staff and a couple of sheep, as a big thunderclap and a bolt of lighteining hits the stage!
I think not!
I am a Jew, but ... I had to draw the line somewhere!!

No problem Bobby. I agree with you on use of the word "Caucasian" for so called "White people". I know that the concept of "races" IS SILLY, BECAUSE ALL HUMANS are 99.8% the same. And even those small genetic differences are too mixed up to separate groups. We all came from one couple back about 80,000 years ago, when there were only about 10,000 humans in the World!!!! So we are all reasonably close cousins.
I know what The Caucasus Mountains are and the relationship of them as the "so called" original home of the "so-called " "white race". That has all been shot down by DNA research. I have some Georgian, Armenian and Azerbaijani friends.
I'm a Jew, too. So, part of my ancestry is from Palestine (only mine is the one in Asia (but quite near to Africa). So- you are a descendent of Falashas? Wow!

Anyway, I only used the term "Caucasian", because that's what the '50s American parents who wouldn't allow their kids to listen to music produced by "descendents of slaves" , called themselves.

I, personally, came from a home whose parents liked jazz and blues music. After moving from Canada to Chicago, we lived in South Chicago, but my father and uncles had stores deep in the South Side, and that's where I hung out. Even before we moved (for my first 13 years) I spent all summer, or large parts, in Chicago, and my uncles had their stores in The South Side. So I grew up with that music. Most Jewish families I knew were very liberal regarding race relations. But I knew a few other Jewish families who wouldn't allow their kids to get involved with that "Schwartze Chaleria")- (difficult to spell Yiddish with Roman characters).

I just wanted to make sure you don't think I'm a racist. Some of my best friends are humans!!!

Hey Robb: Re your last sentence: "Some of my best jokes are friends" - George Clinton

Lady M: You know you love those seasons in the sun! What lyrics!!! Besides you do like the beach, don't you??? Well, don't 'cha?? Well so did Terry. In fact, the only starts he could reach, were just starfish on the beach. :-) That song is one of my guilty pleasures. I hate it but, it came out when I was 14. As such, it is one of those songs that I kinda liked. Damn, did I really say that????
Hey, I was less cynical....Juice was innocent then :-)
P.S.: I like virgin Pina Coladas & Juice has.........FEELINGS....NOTHIN G MORE THAN FEELINGS....whoa, whoa, whoa :-)

Bobby: LET IT RAIN (BOOM!!!) It's not nice to fool with Bobby Eli (BOOOOOOOMMMM!!!!) Damn Bobby, think of the possibilities there. You could have come out in a huge egg. Ok, I know that New Birth did that, but, you could've come out in huge afros & togas!! If not togas, glitterized jumpsuits....."Nights like this I-i-i wish, raindrops would fal-al-al-al-al....SO IT SHALL BE DONE SAITH ELI (BOOOOOOOOM!!!!!)
That would've been cool!!! I also like the Sheep in a manger idea :-)

Ralphie & Moe: To paraphrase Willie Nelson: ERRGGH is always on my mind. Sounds like a plan to me. I miss my ERRGGH :-)

My choice for the ultimate toilet song is Sam Cookes' Cousin Of Mine. That stupid banjo.....ERRGGH!!!!!!!! Not exactly a shining moment there :-)

Hello Submarine, soulful friends!

Hi, Mr. "Electronic"
For what you tolds about "Eli's Second Coming", IMHO, yuo've had enough common sense. And, you're internationally well known for all the good things you have do. Myself, previously ignored the existence of "Eli's Second Coming" until somebody here in SDF mentioned it.

Another music style I hate is what MTV presents as "Latin Music" (Enrique Iglesias and some other insipide music).
I thinks that what MTV understand as "Latin Music" and THE Latin Music (Arturo Sandoval, Joe Bataan, etc.) don't have nothing in common.

Also I was some ungree when in a TV interwiew, Spice Girls says they make a sort of "Philly Sound" (????!!!!). Yes, and Mozart invented Gangsta-Rap!

Peace!

Chi Drummer: I'm feeling you on that Abba tip. Sorry Nosey, but the only way that I got used to Dancing Queen was through osmosis. Somewhere deep, deep down in the archives past, I spanked their collective heinies over that song. The only thing that Abba made that I had any use for was the break of Voulez Vous....Ah Ha!!! That break was great.

You Sexy Thing was another of those songs that grew on me through osmosis, even though I was vaccinated against such things. I just couldn't take Errols' singing & his voice.....chalk on a blackboard, spoon scraping against a aluminum pot. I used to hate that..."I beeleave in merkle....wear yooofrommm...ewe sexy thieeng...Yesterday..I was one of the lonely peeple...now, you're lying next to mee....givin' it to meeee" ERRGGH!!!! I much preferred the funky Disco Queen!!!

I want to catch the next big thing. In fact I'm working on it.....COUNTRY & WESTERN GANGSTER RAP!!!! Remember, Juice told you so!!!

I like "Surfin' Bird"... But your other choice, Count, "Patches" by Dickie Lee, is IMO the most heinous,
#*cked-up record ever made, ever.. So I agree with you on that one. Another one I've always hated is Diana Ross' version of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". I like a lot of her records, but.. during the few weeks when it was on CKLW every 5 minutes I worked in a takeout place in Oak Park called Checker Bar B-Q. Whenever "Ain't No.." came on I'd leave the building! Schlock doesn't get any schlockier...

Hey Marshall,
Have you heard the stripped version (of vocals that is) of Ain't No Mountain High Enough off the SITSOM Deluxe Edition? The Funks really give the song a workout. It's great...no really it is!

Then again I never listened to it 5 times an hour for a 3-4 week period.

Now if we were talking about "Crocodile Rock"...

I have been feeling a little " funny " lately. Perhaps if I do lie down for a bit.....I gotta be honest though...F.A. was one singer (??? ) that could really get under my skin.... Pair him up with Annette Funicello ( A. F. ....Hmmm F.A. and A. F....must have been some sort of cosmic hoakem ) and you have Dreck Supreme!

Besides "I Just Called To Say I Love You" and "Working My Way Back To You/Forgive Me Girl", I would like to add ...

Anything by Michael Jackson after "Remember The Time", anything by Brittney Spears, Ashanti, and J-Lo, as well as "Believe"-Cher, "Sleepin" & "Upside Down"-Diana Ross, and "Something In Common"-Whitney and Bobby Houston.

"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Hotel California" are two of my faves. "ANMHE", the long version is ace, the edited version, I don't care for. If I think of any more, I'll post. Just thought of two more -- "Stay In My Corner" and "All This Love" by Patti LaBelle. Girl, you know you didn't and can't hold that note that long.

Ryon, I'm LMAO at Whitney & Bobby Houston! Ha! :-)

I don't mind Patti's covers of 'Stay In My Corner' and 'All This Love' at all. Of course they can't touch the originals but they aren't bad IMO. I don't care for the cold, electronic production (keyboards, synths and beat machines) of most 90's R&B but Patti always brings excitement to whatever it is she's singing.
