Jimmy/Luke I'm with you on Margie - a fine singer, and definitely one of the highlights of that CD for me. She was from Georgia and was produced by Clarence Carter on his Future Stars label. She also recorded for Chi-Sound, Startown and (allegedly) Soul-Po-Tion. Her cover of Shirley Brown's "It's Worth A Whipping" on Chi-Sound is very nice. She started as a gospel singer, but you could probably tell that from listening to her... (Message edited by bjl on August 02, 2004) |

Hey Jimmy, You got taste there!! I first heard of Margie Alexander from her 1979 Chi-Sound Disco hit, Gotta Get A Hold On Me B/W the pretty ballad What'cha Trying To Do To Me. Around the end of the '90s, I picked up Atlantics' "Sisters Of Soul" CD, where I heard the great Can I Be Your Main Thing for the first time. How it wasn't a hit absolutely escapes me. It had all of the elements that made a hit when it was released. That was definitely a hit record!!! Atlantic simply blew that one!!! That's the best thing that came from the labels forcing CDs down our throat. They mined the vaults & released some long forgotten songs & many songs that just didn't get much airplay, if any. That Sisters Of Soul is a prime example. There are some real gems on that CD!!! |

Hey all!!! Jimmy: The answer amazingly enough is no!!! I still can't understand why. It had that deep Soul feel that was quite popular at the time. Atlantic must've dropped the ball big time on this song. Maybe they were putting more emphasis on Aretha & trying to break Roberta Flack. |

Jimmy: Atlantic issued Sweet Surrender as the B-side of My Love. My Love went to #10 R&B & I'l willing to bet that Sweet Surrender got a lot of spins. I don't hear people speak much about My Love, but it seems like everyone really liked Sweet Surrender! |
