The month of July started off leisurely with a visit to Channel 3 News for a interview here in Cleveland with Anchor & Jimmy fan 'Jeff Maynor'. Then Jeff bringing Jimmy his favorite bakery dounuts at home on a couple of sundays. Had great discussions of memory lane in the biz. Jimmy got alot of rest on those hot balmy days, I chilled out in the backyard pool. Mid-July we celebrated our birthdays 5&1/2 days apart but together !! THANKS to everyone for all your good wishes!!!!!! Then we headed for L.A. to shop around for housing prospects, chilled in the hotel & pool of course! Had a business/social dinner with 'Narada Michael Walden'. The next day a private meeting at "Warner Studios" with head movie soundtrack honcho 'Gary Lamelle' (sp.), 'Narada', & 'David Ritz' reguarding 'Jimmy's life' being brought to the big screen. House hunted and went to Venice Beach with documentry director/producer 'Mathew Buzzell'. Then on July 25th. we attended "David Ritz's Baptismal", with 'Mabel John' presiding over the ceremonies. The church was filled with mostly people there for David. Some of the celebs on hand were 'Janice Jackson' & Her huge bodyguard, 'Howard Hewett' who sang "Joy" was there with his daughter Anisha and at David's house afterward for the party. 'Herb Alpert' & his wife were there. 'Harry Weinger'(Motown/Polydor) and 'Leo Sachs'(Rhino Records) were there for all the festivities, as was David's family members. "Mabel John's" sons attended (Paul & Doug). 'Jeanie Long'(Sisters Love group) sang, she was amazing! And a slew of other people I can't remember. It was a beautiful church & ceremony to say the least. Afterward 'Harry, Leo, Jimmy, & I' made a quick run to "Thelma Cook's 'Golden Oldies Reecords' shop" to hunt for vynal. I think 'Leo & Harry' spent a fortune there that day, LOL!! Thelma (proprietor) was kind enough to open on Sunday for a couple hours just for us. I even found '3'-45's of Jimmy's on the 'Savoy label' in mint condition from the mid-50's! And a few other goodies I'll scan now. Here are some 'photos' of our adventures: First one at home with News Anchorman 'Jeff Maynor':

I tried to get us reservations at our favorite Hollywood Hotel "The Rennessaince" on Hollywood & Highland, but they were booked solid due to a movie premeire, dang! I missed the huge horizon, infinity pool there , so we were booked in the next closest available hotel on Highland Blvd. Here's a shot of their little cute pool, where I spent a few afternoons, lol:

On the 19th. We were taken to dinner at an old "Rat Pack" Hollywood haunt, "Taylor's Steakhouse" by 'Narada Michael Walden' (Producer & Jazz Drummer excellent!!), his beautiful wife 'Joy' and two of his Artists "DTB", who are about to break out really really big. The food was excellent 'Joy & I', both had the Colossal Shrimp Cocktail and Prime Rib of Beef Au Jus Dinner. 'Narada' had a little birthday suprise for Jimmy! 'Narada' is one of the sweetest people you could ever meet! The young artists are 14 & 16 years old and have been performing since they were 3 & 5 years old!! One raps & one sings. The go by the name of "DTB", here is their new CD:

Narada is a very sweet & sincere person. Here's one of 'He & Jimmy' from the "Rhythm & Blues Foundation Awards" in 1987, Jimmy was one of the first inductees. Hi SoulSister I enjoyed your pics as per usual esp the ones of Mabel John and Thelma Cook. Were you close to the Holiday Inn on Highland? I stayed there 9 years ago and it was great. I have a real soft spot for the music history of sixties Hollywood and would love to re-visit the town. David |

Hi David; Glad you enjoyed the pics. Mabel is great, and Ms. Thelma Cook is a sweet lady. We were next door to the H.I. at the Best Western Hollywood Plaza Inn. You would love Hollywood today since the re-did everything on Holly wood & Highland Blvds. The New Kodak Theater, Mann's, The new Mall, lots of Resturants including Spago's, beautiful archetecture. L.A. & Hollywood History is just as interesting as Soul history . Here's a couple photos I took of the area 2 years ago while staying at the new Renissance:

Hi Soul Sister I forgot all about my question. Apologies. You brought back a lot of memories! The Renaissance looks like "my" Holiday Inn, with the circular restaurant at the top of the building. I always remember walking down Hollywood Boulevard and feeling quite unsafe at 10am. I guess I've come a long way since then. I loved the look of the old Egyptian Theater frontage. It seemed to be closed down at that time. We walked down to Capitol Records and had a fantastic time there. I then looked up HB Barnum who had a place at Hollywood & Vine, but he wasn't in. I went around to the library and got my fix of Yellow Pages from back in the day. Then down to Sunset to look for the Motown building and the Liberty Building. Also to Romaine for the Motown Studio. Also went to the Hollywood Bowl and dreamt of the Supremes playing there back in the day. Went to BB Kings after the Universal Studio Tour and saw Arthur Adams, one of my heroes. He was fantastic. Ate in Musso & Frank's grill on Hollywood. Great stuff. It still remains a goal of mine to check out the Emperor Production Studios in Hollywood where the Mirwood Sound was created. I loved my visit to LA and must do it again! (Message edited by david meikle on August 13, 2004) (Message edited by David_Meikle on August 13, 2004) |

Hi David; WOW!! You got to visit many more places than I on our trips. Sounds like you had a fantastic time, we were always busy with either the "gig" plus plus various meetings, dinners, and searching for affordable housing which in L.A. is a major challenge, lol! David, thanks for the list of your Hollywood great adventure, it was fun and interesting to hear!! S.S. |

David; Jimmy told me that the Renaissance used to be a Holiday Inn at one time where he & the band stayed when they appearred at either Catalina's, the Roosevelt Hotel's Cine-Grill, or the House of Blues on Sunset. But that was years before they renovated it and nenewed Hollywood & Highland area. The Holiday Inn I was talking about is just up the hill on Highland, same side of street. S.S. |

I've thought and thought how I was going to post this...I've known about Jimmy Scott ever since I was little, as my uncles and relatives were really into jazz and argued who was the best singer, Jimmy Scott's name came up often. Now, I'm not really fond of jazzy ballads, and I have no Jimmy Scott records, but when I noticed that his special was coming on PBS, I had to watch it, BECAUSE I HAD TO SEE A MASTER AT HIS CRAFT. I guess you can not particularily like the type of singing but know a special performer when you see one? During the concert segments, Jimmy had the audience in the palm of his hand and dug deep into the meaning of the songs, and relayed this to the audience. There's not a lot of singers on this earth who can do that. I'll probably not buy any of Jimmy's records, but I certainly did enjoy seeing one of the giants of music give his all and teaching all to see how to put a song across. I don't think anyone will understand what I'm trying to say, but I had to post anyway. |

Whoa Soul Sis! You clownin'! LOL. It looks like you and Jimmy have had lots of fun this Summer. Hanging out with Narada Michael Walden, Lou Rawls, Jerry Butler, Mable John & Howard Hewett! Must be nice. Thanks for sharing the pics with us. Soul Sister, it's so funny that you should post the scan of Narada's "Garden Of Love Light" album. 'Delightful' from that album is my favorite jam by Narada and I've been playing it again recently. |

Hi StingBeeLee; Oh I think alot of people on this forum will understand what you are saying especially the old heads, lol! I've seen people who are not jazz fans per say come to one of Jimmy's shows get totally hooked-in and that hook has a hold on them forevermore, lol! Even those not into jazz standards are bowled over by his emotional performance wringing the meaning out of every lyric dry to the bone with his unique phrasing, oh yea (chuckle)...Especially his peers, any of the performers/recording artists from "ALL genre's" of music will ultimately say the same thing and respect the greatness in another artist they consider a master and a major influence in the business among singers. Jimmy's always been known as a singer's singer. It's helped lots of others in their careers though his own uniqueness may have helped hold back his own career to some extent, as well as other circumstances. Like Brother Ray(RIP) has always said Jimmy Scott has made his mark and influenced many singers. But because of certain circumstances mega-acknowlegement has eluded him and thats too bad and too sad. But ask anyone in the business they'll tell you, LOL! LOL!! I know just what you talkin' bout! Jimmy will appreciate your comments and insight when I read him your post. Thanks for relaying your story SLB!! All The Best, S.S. |

Hey Rodmann; LOL!! Yea we had fun!! The pics. of Lou Rawls were taken 2 years ago. The one with Jerry, Chuck, Jimmy, & Narada was taken in 1987 at the Rhythm & Blues Foundation Induction Ceremony. Narada, his wife Joy, Howard & Mabel, etc.. were taken a couple weeks ago. Take care, S.S. |

Hey SoulSis; Thanks for understanding!!! I thought the next time Jimmy comes to Detroit, I'm gonna see him, as I completely enjoyed the special, and I knew by the way he "got" into a song and put all of his being into the song and the audience, that one day I'm gonna see him. I've read lots of interviews by singers who say they were influenced by Jimmy Scott. |
