I was wondering if anyone remembers watching ""SoulBeat on WGPR in Detroit in late 60's? The reason I ask is because Chuck Johnson who started this show passed away from cancer on July 27, here in Oakland Ca. Just wanted to know if anyone remembers the show and him. He brought SoulBeat here officially in 1978. |

Hi Charise- Just wandering if 'SoulBeat' played live performances or promotional films or whatever else... also curious as to whether you or anyone else knows if old episodes were re-run... old soul stuff like that always makes me wander what gems are out there... /Erik |

Yes, when he came here in 77( I rememeber it airing seems like '78) I would see old clips of artists at local places singing. I wondered where it was from. Some was from Detorit and he even had a dance show, I think it was from there and you would see people dancing, you just don't see stuff like that anymore. I saw a video( I guess these were early videos) of Joe Simon singing the "Moonwalk" and doing the dance LOL. When we had that fire here in '91 I believe a lot his footage got burned in a wherehouse. I saw footage of Shalamar (pre Howard Hewett)lead was Gerald Brown they were singing by some pool in L.A, this was when the Disco Gardens album was out. I saw Klymaxx by that same pool. before we knew who they were, with like 9 or 10 people in the group. He basically showed local stuff from everywhere and then the current artists first videos like Angela Bofill singing "This Time I'll Be Sweeter, Sly & the Family Stone, and interviews with artists. He then made it more community oriented by not just showing videos, but there was a Sun. program and Information programs I did not know, until I read about his passing that SoulBeat had been taken off the air by ComCast. They claimed he owed money for unpaid lease access bills. |

I remember them showing mostly promotional videos and interviews with artists on "Soul Beat" like Berry Gordy's protegees High Energy and Ashford and Simpson around 1980. I enjoyed the show very much on WGPR-TV 62. |
