Brian,
Great job! I've been trying to find anything by The Distants. Nate, of course, I know. Who are the others? Are any of them from our fair state(Michigan, not Mass.)?

Brian, Travis Wammack is a white guitarist from Memphis.
Freddie Hugues had a great LP on Wand 664, "Send my baby back" in 1968. If you see it, don't let it go !

Scratchy was one of the first big instrumentals on the NS scene.

Incredibly catchy especially with the backward punchline.

I have a copy on UK Atlantic.

Brain T, The Distants we're an earlier encarnation of The Temptations. Can't recall names exactly, I'll try.. Otis Williams, leader, Richard Street, Al Bryant, James Crawford and Melvin Frankin. The flip side of "Come On" was "Always" was on their second manager, artist and label owner Johnnie Mae Matthews and was originally released on her Northern label in 1958 or 9.

Yes Mel, on his LP, he does some great versions of "You're my everything" and "Natural man", previously sung by Aretha.

Brain T., Correction I mistyped Emperors of Soul, excuse me. I forgot and left this out on my post earlier today. Before Otis Williams & The Distants
they we're all another incarnation of The Temptations and they we're know as The Siberians, the group lineup
we're..Elbridge "Al" Bryant, James "Pee Wee" Crawford, Arthur Walton, Varnard Plain and Otis Williams (leader).
They also recorded first before calling themselfs The Distants, recording as The Siberians the sides
we're "Pecos Kid" b/w "All of my Life" on one of Johnny Mae Matthew's label Northern's sub labels, I assume?
Also all these 4 sides are too on The Emperors of Soul CD.

I too found some stuff at the National Record Show held here in Cleveland this weekend:

Bobby Bland--"Gotta Get to Know You" (recorded in Detroit with Andre Williams producing)
Solomon Burke--"I'm Not Afraid" (one for my Amy/Mala/Bell soul collection)
Carl Douglas--"Marble and Iron"
Marke Jackson--"I'll Never Forget You"
Walter Jackson--"No Easy Way Down"
Syl Johnson--"That's Why"
Emanuel Laskey--"Don't Lead Me On Baby" (a repro copy)
Marvellos--"In the Sunshine"
Mavis Staples--"I Have Learned to Do Without You"
Edwin Starr--"Take Me Clear From Here"
Howard Tate--"These Are the Things That Make Me Know You're Gone"
Tymes--"What Would I Do"
Jr. Walker & the All-Stars--"Shotgun" (Dutch issue with orange Motown label)
and there were a few good 'uns I passed on. At least there are guys bringing Northern soul items to sell at these shows! :-)

Best,

Mark

Soulaholic, I just happen to have a Margie Hendrix thread going right now. I've only heard a hand full of her singles and she's fantastic! Will you please post in this topic or in the Margie Hendrix topic what you think about the 'On The Right Track' single? I've not familiar with that one. Who was the producer? Please feel free to share any info about this particular single or any other info about Miss Hendrix that you have. :-)

Thanks Don and Phil(hey! You're not the Everly Brothers, are you?). I appreciate the info. You too, Robb(despite your crack about punk rock on another thread! Ha!). I'm always appreciative of your efforts to educate this lil old punker in the ways and sounds of soul. Thanks!

No problem, Brian T., we all have our own quirks. I like Bulgarian bagpipe music, so you never know!

A punker and a soulie, too. Wow! I have to admire your wide taste in music.

Freddie Hughes is from the West Coast - Oakland.

There's a superb five page feature on him in a recent issue of "Juke Blues" (issue #54)

contact Juke@jukeblues.com for subscription details.

Freddie has a website at
www.FreddieHughes.com

The Dorians - I know next to nothing about them but it's a possibility that they're actually
Canadians who crossed the border to record at
GM in Detroit.

Robb,
...and folk and blues and gospel and hillbilly and Christmas music and I can't fail to mention the ever-popular Amish snuff metal. Can't get into "stoner rock", though. That stuff sucks. Or maybe I'm getting old.

Brian: What's your favourite (or is it most hated?) Amish Snuff Metal song? Might be a genre I could get into! (if they don't scream, don't have a lot of reverb, make clear recordings, use sax, piano and other old-fashioned instruments, the singers sing from their diaphragms instead of their mouths, emphasise melody, songs are written well, etc.)
