Hi, Mr. Weldon!! Please, if you have the chance, salute this Philly great in the name of a true spanish's Philly Sound lover. He is, surely, a great Classical Music lover, because many classical arrangements of Philly songs was by Bobby Martin (especially Monk Montgomery's "Reality"!). Hope Bobby and yourself both are very well. Thanks, Peace & Soul Food |

All that I can say is that in my opinion, Mr Martin simply does not received the amount of credit that he deserves. Bobby should be spoken of like all of the other Gods of the music industry. Sheer excellence & class!!! |

This thread could really have amounted to a true celebration of an unsung genius, a man who pioneered and personified THE rhythm&blues sound of the 1970's... But, instead, it becomes another one for the archive graveyard, because folk are caught up in the power of name recognition... In truth, Mr. Bobby Martin is the creator of the sound that became known as The Sound Of Philadelphia, as all of his arranging credits for PIR, as well as, Columbia and Solar records, to name a few, will attest... This man arranged the music, while the Gamble&Huff's, Sigler's, Wansel's, and McFadden&Whitehead's wrote and produced the lyrical concept of PIR... In my humble opinion, one who does this dirty work of the business, producing, writting, and arranging wonderful lyrics and music, deserve more of our recognition than those who simply stand on a stage, or in front of a studio microphone, and blow... To me, the singer gets TOO much credit, and that is because they are so visible... Sadly, Americans being among the most intellectually shallow and superficial of all the world's populations, value the name on the marquee, above those behind the scenes... This is where I give the British, and others mad credit, as they value the making of the art from it's inception to completion, and all the players that make it possible... A man like Bobby Martin deserves that kind of treatment, that kind of recognition, because in his lifetime, he was involved with the creation of more great music than most any singer I can name outside of the true prolific legends, like Smokey, Barry, Stevie, and Curtis... Now that he's gone from the music scene to pursue other things in his life, it is easy to forget that he was the man who produced 6 albums for the Manhattans, including their legendary Kiss and Say Goodbye album, as well as albums for Bobby Caldwell, Nancy Wilson, Benny Golson, the Jacksons, and LTD... I'm glad that I found out that he was THE MAN behind all of that big, juicy sound of PIR and SALSOUL, so whenever I hear those songs played, I instantly attach his name to them... I just wanna tell Bobby Martin, though this music may not even matter to you in your "new" life, it gave meaning to me and millions of others in a very impressionable time of my life... Seeing the picture of you presented by W.A.M.III is like seeing the DOCTOR who prescribed the medicine for so much healing... I have given Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, and many others their due props, and believe it is time you've gotten yours... You richly deserve it... Peace! Isaiah |

Hi Isaiah, good to see you back. I agree with what you're saying - I think however that it's more a case of the sheer volume of great music that Bobby Martin's been involved in. Just where do you start ? - frankly half the time when I see his name my brain jams with echoes of dozens of records he worked on. I think most of us are well aware of his greatness - it's just a case of being a bit daunted by the sheer immensity of his contribution. Fair enough ? Davie |

I am a huge Bobby Martin fan and always loved the quality of his arrangements especially with the vocals where I think he truly shined. There is an acetate from Bobby Martin called Monster Records, it was recorded around 1976 and contains recordings from Jean Terrell, Friends of Distinction and other artists. The song The Train from Friends of Distinction is Bobby Martin at his best. I believe the acetate was created to pitch his production company to a major. I am not aware of any recordings released by Monster Records, so I looks like the deal did not materialize. But he went on and worked on some amazing productions with Tavares, LTD, Ecstasy Passion and Pain... After the early 80's I wonder what happened to him? I heard he quit the business altogether and worked for the INS. Does someone know? |

Hey, Davie Gordon, how're you, sir!(smile!) Thanks for the welcome back... I owe it all to the auspices of our great moderator, Mr. Ralph Terrana, and my homeslice Mr. Julius Freeman, and their associates... Very powerful men, very powerful!!!(SMILE!) As to the imensity of Bobby Martin's work, I agree wholeheartedly, Davie... I most admire how he has moved on with his life after music, and never uttered a mumbling word of his greatness... Just the attitude of a man who did his professional duties, got paid, and kept it movin'... Peace! Isaiah |

Welcome home Isaiah, You were missed! Your'e correct the singers are given all the props, not those behind the scene who did 99% of the work. Bobby Martin is an arranger par excellance and his body of works are extensive and memorable. His name is at the top of my list of great arrangers. |

I have yet to delve into the vast work Bobby Martin has done for the music business for well over 40 years, but the Philly Sound is an excellent place to start in this musical roadmap that he has drawn of the landscape of modern American music in both soul, pop and otherwise. In total respect and admiration to the other excellent arrangers on the PIR staff-such as Classical genius Thom Bell, street-trained workhorse and guitar general Norman Harris, SDF charter member and premier musician Bobby Eli and quiet, effective and criminally overlooked forces Jack Faith, Lenny Pakula, Vince Montana, Dexter Wansel, Richard Rome, Ronnie Baker and Roland Chambers-Bobby Martin should be given all of the credit due for being one of the main contractors of the Philly Sound, for his excellent ability to arrange horns and strings to sonic perfection, precision, attention-to-detail and using his valuble resources (namely MFSB and various artists, in conjunction with Gamble-Huff and other PIR producers and songwriters) to realize his vision of what true quality songs should be made and should sound like. In this era of electronic manipulation, cookie-cutter productions and lack of classically and street trained musicians on hits regularly appearing on the charts, Bobby Martin are among the last of an generation of producers/arrangers who put music FIRST over margin profits and trends. We must hold people like Bobby Martin in high regard and be appreciative of his efforts and achievements; for giving us a virtual escape from today's repetitive, overhyped and less-than-stellar quality of music that is saturating/suffocating the airwaves and television-and a place which we can escape to and enjoy the classic treasures from an era that is called "THE SOUND OF A GENERATION". Much love and respect to Mr. Martin. |
