Arthur Crier former singer with The Mellows & The Halos, died last Thursday of a heart attack. His was the bass voice we heard on Pretty Little Angel Eyes.

He produced a NY-Metro TV show, "Doo Wop Is Alive". He also organized the "Anothr Great Day In Harlem" photo from 1999, which gathered together hundreds of Doo Wop & R&B vocal pioneers.

For those in the NY-Metro area, there will be a tribute show on radio station WFUV (90.7 FM) next week, datge to be announced. Another of our pioneers voice is stilled, but he will live on through his music!

Mr Crier was 69.

RIP

Whoa! There's been as many singers dying this summer as there's been members of my family.

I hadn't posted about Arthur's passing on SD, because of the lack of interest here when I posted about the DC events and the website we did with many pictures of the 3-day DC venue which Arthur was the "brainchild" of and one of the main people to put the events together. Arthur was very near and dear to me, and a loss words can't express.

A very sad day indeed. Jim and I spent about 3 and 1/2 hours at Arthur's viewing (from 3 to 6:30 pm). The rest of our time was spent in travel to and from our house in the Poconos (appx. 5 hours each way via car, bus, & subway). It was very important to us that we "say goodbye" to Arthur and give our condolences to Dorothy (his wife) and Shirley (his sister) in person. Those who were in attendance while we were there
- Freddie Barksdale (Solitaires), Rauel Cita (Harptones), Willie Winfield (Harptones), Lowe Murray (Fitones/Harptones), Bobby Mansfield (Wrens), Paul Himmelstein (Heartbreakers), Sylvia (Clickettes), Buddy McCrae (Chords), Richard Barrett, Lorraine (Socialites & husband Anthony), Kym (Socialites), and of course Arthur's dearest and closest friends, Lillian Leach (Mellows), Gene Tompkins and Clyde Frazier, Sr. Many of the NY area deejays who Arthur (and the Mellows) supported over the years during fund-raisers by being there in person to sing on the air, etc., also were in attendance (Danny of WFUV Group Harmony Review, Neil of WFUV Group Harmony Review, Gordon of WRHU Sunday Serenade, Bruce of WBAU Sounds of the 50's). I'm sure many more people came after we left, as the viewing was to go to 8 pm. (We had to leave at that point to catch a bus back to Scranton). Someone (I didn't get her name) did a video of the DC main event, and from that video, took the segments where Arthur was singing (with the Mellows and with Bill Lindsay, and also some of the grand finale) and made a special memorium video for Arthur, which was shown several times during the wake. For those of us who were in DC and heard Arthur's great bass on "If I Didn't Care", you can imagine how everyone felt when they saw/heard this. Words can't express the feeling of love that was in that room filled with friends & family of one of the nicest human beings that ever walked this planet. If anything positive is to be said, Arthur went quickly and without pain, and he also got to see his dream come true, the DC events. He was one of the very few human beings I knew/know that knew what his dream was and got to see it happen!

If you wish to see our website on Tribute to Pioneers of R&B & Doowop, and also a memorium to Arthur Crier (which includes a full bio of Arthur, including his time in Detroit at Motown in the late 60s/early 70s), just go here:

Hi, Nikki. I just got done reading the memorium on the web page. It's very interesting. I had no idea that Arthur Crier worked at Motown records. That's something I didn't know until now.

Guys, I'm not going to be on the forum as much this week. Another one of my family memebers died today. This time, it was one of my great aunts. She passed away from bone cancer earlier this evening. This is like the third close family who died this summer. This is getting really bad.

Well, it's kind of to do that when so many people you love are always passing away about every month.

Hi Dinelle,

I understand how you feel. Just be strong sweetheart, sometimes things just don't seem to make sense. As things unfold, the meanings do become clearer. It won't make you feel any better now. Eventually, it will. What you must always do is remember the positive effect that they have played in your life & to keep their teachings in your heart. They'll come a time in your life when something will happen & you'll see their workings & positive influences in your life. Take heart & trust this one thing: As long as they're in your heart & memory, they're never far from you.

Most of all, they wouldn't want you to be sad. You're whole life is ahead of you. Take all of that love & lessons that they taught you & spread your wings & soar!!! That is what they would want for you. Make them proud sweetheart, that's the best way to honor their memory.

Guys, I might be off the forum a little longer than usual. My aunt's mother died last night. I know that time's been really hard this summer since I've been losing family members right and left, but it's even more tragic when two family pass away in the same month in the same week. Why is this happening?
