What a show, what a show, what a show. Sam Moore of Sam and Dave! Mary Wilson of the Supremes! Ashford and Simpson! The Temptations Review Featuring Dennis Edwards! The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin! One of the Greatest Sax players in the world, James Carter. Funk Bros. par excellence, Dennis Coffey! And one of the greatest groups of all time, THE FOUR TOPS! And when Levi came out and sang "I believe in Me and You" with Aretha, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. His voice was very very strong and powerful, and he was really enjoying himself. One of the most touching tributes I've ever seen!

Lee,
Wasn't it a surprise when that distinctive voice came out of Levi? As natural as anything, as if he'd never stopped singing.

One song at a time though ...they coaxed him to sing a bit on another, but they should have him do just one for now.

Sue and Lee that is such GOOD NEWS about Our LEVI and the Four Tops last night, I could not wait to wake up here in England to read reports, but the early News of LEVI'S Strong Vocal is better than I even expected and show Prayers are answered.

I was with YOU all in Spirit last night, now to wait for the DVD!

What where the Four Tops two new songs like?

Thanks John

Douglasm, if you go to the Detroit News article in the other Four Tops thread, I believe there is some information about the TV taping there.
I came late from work, and at the time, the Tops were singing "Ask the Lonely". Then Mary Wilson came out and did "River Deep-Mountain High" with the Tops, and performed "7 rooms of gloom". Then the Tops came out and sang a new song, which was very nice, written by Ronnie. Then Dennis Edwards and his Tempts with the Tops sang "Indestructable" with Dennis shouting "50 years, you're Indestructable" and Dennis and the Tempts sang "I'll turn to Stone". Robert Taylor (I think) of the Power Station and the Firm (two rock bands) came out and sang "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever"? Aretha came out and did a duet with Theo, and then they brought out Levi to a long, long, long standing ovation and he and Aretha and the Tops sang "I believe in You and Me", Levi was smiling and waving. It was truly one of the most touching moments I have witnessed, I'm not ashamed to say I cried, hankerchefs flew out, tears flowed, the crowd was practically roaring, you could just see the love with Aretha and the Tops. Then everyone came out and did "Baby I need your Loving". What a wonderful night!

Sue,
Yes, I think the first couple of words were very low, and then bam!, the full, rich, distinctive sound of his voice came out and the audience roared! Obie had to leave the stage for a minute, he was crying so hard. Ronnie was in tears, and Duke patted Levi on the shoulder, and when they surrounded him when the Tops come in with their harmonies on "I believe", the audience roared and clapped. Aretha sang as if she was in church, the Queen reigns!

That is the BEST TONIC or Medicine that Your Dear Father and OUR LEVI could have, it brings "lumps" to my throat and tears to the eyes, but it is such Good News and just what we all have Prayed for and will continue to do!

Lee,

The English guy who came out and sang was Paul Rodgers of Bad Company (and Free) ...his big songs were "All Right Now," (with Free), then "Bad Company" (with the group of the same name), later on "Rock Steady" -- soulful white boy vocals on top of hard rock, which was of course the big sound in the late '60s/early '70s.

He looks good, sounded good, but I know most of the audience hadn't a clue who he was ...

Wow, Sue, glad you pointed that out. I can't believe he was there, but it makes perfect sense. I've been reaquainting myself with Free since I picked up their Molten Gold anthology this past month. Paul Rodgers was the prototype of the Classic Rock singer circa--the 70s. Listening to that old Free material, which was much more downtempo than the Bad Company stuff, you really get a feel for just how soulful a vocalist he was and apparently still is.

Rodgers' big hits with Bad Company that people here might remember are Feel Like Makin' Love,Shooting Star, Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Rock and Roll Fantasy, and Good Lovin' Gone Bad.

Right-o, John!

I was explaining to friends who aren't as attuned to rock, to put him in context, that virtually every local rock band I know in the late '70s had a lead singer who modeled himself on Rodgers. He was extremely influential.

If his hits had been played for the audience, I know they'd remember him. Part of what was confusing I think, is he looks like he's in his 30s! Not a bad thing, in entertainment.

John and Sue,

If you had a radio in 1974, you heard "Feel Like Making Love". Most people still wouldn't recognize Paul because he was "low-keying" his role in Bad Company, whereas, I knew people who referred to his older band as Paul Rodgers and Free. He was one of my fave rock singer from that period.

I can't wait to see the special...it's becoming more and more rare that events like this live up to, or in this case, exceed all expectations.

Sue;
Thanks for the correction. I remember Bad Company being played on CKLW, but I was very young at the time and wondered why a group would name themselves that. JuiceFree! I sat at the computer and tried to describe the night, but how can you describe your heart filling up with joy? Man oh man, I stood up with my fist in the air saying "SING LEVI!!!" It was one of those times that you are witnessing the best moment in the world and the awesome power of God!
Yeah, I saw Spyder Turner, didn't get to say Hi, he was hugging and kissing everyone! One of those nights where you forget your own trials and tribulations, and the world seems a much better place.

Hey Spyder!
It was great seeing you and Clay Wednesday night...could you believe the vibe in the room that night? Amazing! By the way, one minute you two were trailing behind me, and next minute you're in the Tempts dressing room! It's a good thing I found my way back to Dennis or I could have spent the night in bowels of the building somewhere and nobody would have known where to find me! Thanks to you two...I think I'll start calling you guys Frick and Frack!!! What an evening...I can't wait to see the broadcast this Fall...does anyone know whether it'll be on cable, PBS, or network television??

Hi Spyder. I could see you and Clay from the stage. I got Millie a back stage pass so she enjoy the show in front or back stage. What a great show and showing of support for Levi and The Four Tops! I was glad to be a part of it. People in the music business do care about each other. The City of Detroit never looked and sounded better. The A team was on the stage that night.

Hey Dennis,
And enjoy the show I did!!! The catered dinner was incredible, the confusion/excitement back stage was a lot of fun, my guarding Aretha's dressing room was hysterical, and the choo-choo train with Clay and Spyder was the end of a fantastic night. It just goes to show you how Detroit supports their own, and how much love and respect we have for one another. Thanks to Sis for introducing me to Paul Williams, Jr., and for pointing our David Ruffin's daughter Cheryl (I think that was her name). Thanks, Juicefree and Spyder. For a TV taping, this went pretty smooth. A couple of mistakes, but these pros did the songs on the 2nd take, which was always better than the first!! It was my first time seeing Mary Wilson sing, and she tore into "7 rooms of gloom"; I believe she just might be an expert in how to sing Holland-Dozier-Holland. She walked and strutted around the stage as if she owned it. When Levi came out, he cried and cried, and the band had to start the into over and over, as Levi was overwelmed with the standing ovation. Aretha came out and tore the house down with Theo and Levi. I have only seen Aretha in Detroit, so in my opinion the Queen still rules, I have never seen her put on a bad show, as it seemed she turned back the clock 30 years! I am hopeful that this, like the tribute to Levi in February, will put his rehab on the fast lane!!
Hey Spyder, I met you in February, I was downstairs at the Tribute to Levi, I think you sang "Unforgettable" accapella, you were really enjoying yourself, and I could'nt believe I was shaking the LEGENDARY Spyder Turner's hand!!
Also saw Bobby Rodgers of the Miracles in the audience. If you were not moved by this concert, you were a stone!

Hi all,

I'm back from Detroit, having been blown away by THE BEST SHOW I've ever seen!!! I just skimmed through the responses, so forgive me if I repeat something already mentioned. After the intermission, there was a tribute to Lawrence Payton, when a giant poster of the Four Tops was just above them as they sang "The Four Of Us". That song ALWAYS brings tears to my eyes, because it is such a testament to them!!! And so I lost it - I was sobbing like a baby! Then when Aretha introduced Levi, asking the audience to remain standing, the audience lost it!!! He came smiling out, and as Theo started to sing "I Believe in You and Me" it's when I lost it again.

What a night!!! What a Show!!! And, Spyder will back me up - nobody wanted the night to end. I believe they did a couple of encores of Baby I Need Your Loving, because they didn't want to give up the moment, and neither did we. The opera house staff was very understanding, but at 11:30 you could tell they wanted us to get out of there!!!They dimmed the lights on us!! If it weren't for that, I think we'd still be there!!!

But the culmination was and is Levi's voice!!! So strong!!! And seeing him waving and smiling - what a night!!!

Margie

PS - Spyder, next tem I am coming back to Detroit with a real camera!!! And you can expect more hugs!!!

And Spyder, you are correct. Those who couldn't attend missed one whale of a show. But, it will be on TV and hopefully DVD shortly after the broadcast, so that those who couldn't be there will at least get some sense of how it was that night!!!

Since this was being filmed for TV and DVD, there weren't any camera's allowed, except I assume the Press and photographers associated with the filming. I totally understand the restriction. But as soon as the show is broadcast those who couldn't be there will be able to see it.

I WAS AT THE "TRIBUTE" TO LEVI WITH SPYDER AND FELT THAT HISTORIC MOMENT, BUT THIS SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF THE ANNALS OF "GREAT MOMENTS IN BLACK HISTORY". ..SPYDER, A LITTLE BIRDIE TOLD ME THAT THERE'S A REASON YOU AND CLAY ARE HANGIN' OUT SO TUFF...THEY SAY THAT YOU TWO GUY'S ARE ABOUT TO DROP A TREMENDOUS "FUNK BOMB" ON THE MOTOR CITY..QUESTION: IS YA'LL IS.. OR IS YA'LL AIN'T? INQUIRING MINDS WANTA KNOW.

What a great concert. We are so proud of Detroit and our musicians and artists involved in this production.

Sometimes I wonder if you Detroiters really know how blessed you are? The musical history & being able to share in such a beautiful moment like this occasion....MAN!!! Living history & you are there. Man, you guys are truly blessed.

Tell you what, I'll trade you Mayors Blumberg & Giuliani, Gov Pataki & Donald Trump for Levi & The Four Tops!! I'd be glad to claim them for New York as National Treasures!!

ANY TAKERS????

Juicefree;
It is for the love of Detroit that the Four Tops did the concert here. I believe they all stay (at least the 3 originals) in the CITY of Detroit and have always loved the city. I don't think the Tops would have played the suburbs, they are Detroit bred!!!
I will trade you ex-governor John Engler for all of the New York pols!!

Everyone,

I agree that the Detroiters are the really lucky ones. To have The Four Tops put on such a fantastic show for Detroit, and the response. I am glad that I could fly there to be a fly on the wall and participate just a little.

I don't think any Detroiter will take up any of the swapping offers (mayors, governors, etc). So maybe, Detroit, you'll adopt me???

Margie

Thank you Karyl for posting my review. I did not take any photos. Although, I could have taken some in the lobby where everyone was hanging. I chose to just enjoy the company of those who came out to celebrate with Levi and the Four Tops.

I would like to state that Levi's beautiful voice caused the audience to blow the roof off of the Opera House. I have never heard such a tremendous appause.

Aside from Lawrence Payton's two children singing background, I would like to mention a few children of great Hitsville artist who were also in attendance:

James Jr. - Son of James Jamerson
Michelle - Daughter of Florence Ballard
Cheryl Lynette - Daughter of David Ruffin
Paul Williams Jr. - Son of Paul Williams

I love you Levi Stubbs. Keep the faith. You looked and sounded great!
