Today I had the pleasure of being a guest on Dave Brown's Tuesday afternoon 12noon- 3 pm radio show broadcast out of WKDU at Drexel University. We had a blast reaching back into the very beginnings of my Phily music experience going all the way back to North Philly at the sw corner of 32nd and Diamond st which was essentialy MY personal college of musical knowledge. We played a lot of very rare records which I produced and /or wrote and talked a lot about the history of the Philly record buisness. A little later when I arrived in downtown Philly, who should I run into but none other than the lovely Ms. Gilda Woods, who ran the Dionn and Top and Bottom labels. She informed me that she is seriously considering getting back in the biz and would like for me to hear a few acts that she is considering getting involved with. Hey Bobby Gilda Woods...those great records by Brenda and the Tabs. The 45 pressings on some (US)releases were dire but the music still shone through. Wasn't she a dj or am I mistaken? Did she actually produce in the studio or leave that to the likes of Van McCoy? |

She left it to the pros. She was more of an exec producer and a very nice person, imo. She is the former wife of Philly radio legend, Georgie Woods |

Hello again! Pardon-me, amigo Bobby! I'm sometimes so impulsive that I make a comment without to be 100% sure. I'm checking the "Love Is The Message" album credits and Bitter Sweet is by Bruce Hawes and Jack Faith. The one by "R. Mellin / G. Woods" is "My One And Only Love" wich is a "old standard" of jazz and it's unprobably that this Woods is Gilda (??). Anyway it's a excelent notice those "hiperactive" life by you and other historical Philly family members as Ms. Gilda Woods. I have the impression that i've read his name in some of my singles by Brenda & Tabulations and Ecstasy Passion & Pain. (but i'm not 100% sure and i can't check my singles by now!). You are absolutely correct mi amigo,as it is a very old standard. ms Woods probably wasnt even born when that song was written. |

"My One And Only Love" was penned in 1952 by Robert Mellin and Guy Wood. The song was recorded by artists such as Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and even Sting. But perhaps the best known version is by Frank Sinatra in 1956. |

Bobby you are held in awe here in the uk soul collectors scene . When you worked on tracks such as Joneses Who Loves You and Major Harris Laid Back Love is it true tracks were left in the can. ?? If so, do you have any intention of releasing such works in the future, or do you feel they are best left ' in the can'. We have a quest for all 70s things that didnt materialise !! Staying philly, do you know the whereabouts of Bobby Bennett who had one phila 45 Days Go By and dissapeared without trace. Thanks, |

Hi Glen, Thanks so much mate. In respect to the Joneses, I did produce an ENTIRE album on them for Epic entitles "The Joneses". The cover has a spy glass searching the telephone directory for people named Jones. (Brilliant, eh?) In fact, Expansion are going to release Spirit of Philadelphia 2 which will have the cut In love again on it. There is also an lp and cd on Major Harris called Major, Then and Now(Unidisc) which have all of the rest of the material from those sessions on them. I do , in fact have a good amount of unreleased Philly 70's tracks including three unreleased Jimmy Ruffin which I also produced for Epic. |

I know Ralph Tee and Richard @ Expansion very well. Enjoyed first philly cd. With regards to unreleased Philly including Jimmy Ruffin do you not feel there is a sufficient market here in the uk for such works to see the light of day. Or are they unfinished / unfit for release Bobby. |

dvdmike; Jackie Wilson also recorded that tune, and did an excellent job. I meant to tell before on the other thread that Dinah's version of "Never Let Me Go" is a different song than the others but equally as good. One I'd like to see Jimmy record. S.S. |

Hello Submarine! Hey, Mr. "Electronic", Thanks for the visual pleasure with those nice and historical pics! I don't wanna be undiscret, but if the pick where appears you and Vince, Earl and Joe is from 1998, this signifies that you have lost your hair only in six years? I'm wondering because can happens the same with my hair also. By now I got "much forehead" (!!??) (No ofense you, please) Also, i'm wondering what opinion deserves to Michael McDonalds the "Philly" cover by Billy Paul of his "Takin' To The Streets". Hey, Wonder B, nice picks also. I remember Vince Montana posted in Soulful detroit Forum from Paris during his "french tour". Hope he post again! Peace & Soulful, friends! |

I always wondered what happened to Vince Montana, because I am so used to seeing his pics from back in the day (the good days, that is-circa '73-'76), but it looks like he grew older gracefully and good 2 hear he's still making music to this day. Hi Gene, Gene Faith never was a member of the Moods. Because the Moods were somewhat of a "mystery group" there was a lot of misinformation going around regarding them ie , people thinking that Executive Suite and them were one and the same. Obviously, that was false info. They should have been a big group but promotion was lacking. |

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Is there any link between the Moods and some of the Volcanos? |

Hey Bobby, Any info on Executive Suite? I loved When The Fuel Runs Out. I never thought of before today, but that sure had some Philly flavor to it. Any link there??? |

Dante, The only link is that they are all from Philly. JF. When the fuel runs out was produced by Norman Harris with all of the "usual suspects" at hand. Norm and company had a knack for coming up with very, timely topical and newsworthy ideas and put them into song. The lead singer, Vince Unto lives in L/A. now and I last spoke to him last year. |

Mr. Eli, since your memory is in fine form and you've rercieved the necessary clearence from your physician can you riddle me this : The group New York City were in my opinion the precursors to The Spinners trademark sound. While rummageing through the vaults of my record collection yesterday I came upon their album with "I'm Doing Fine Now" and Happiness is not so hard to find" and wondered if you played guitar on this cut, ( no musician credit info)it certainly sounds like you ! What were those sessions like and what happened to this group ? Second item : Found the album The Temptations which you played on and was produced by Thom Bell ! This album is out of print and rarely mentioned these days, but I found it to be very refreshing and one of my favorite Temptation albums. For the uninformed the hit from this album was the Richard Street led "Aiming at Your Heart", quite a classic unto itself. While listening to this album I wondered why the Spinners didn't recruit Richard Street to replace Philipe Wynne, I know he had the chops and would have fit nicely into thier trademark sound, whaddaya think ? By the way you were jamming on this one.....excellent... Lastly, after watching Mcfadden & Whitehead on PBS recently, which was obviously filmed before his tragic passing, I dug deep into the vault and found their signature album with the cut Aint No Stoppping us now, of cousre you were listed in the credits but according to the back cover the Futures sung background on this albumand it listed all of their names including former Temptation (and one of my personal favorites Harry M, what were those sessions like ? Man I've had that album since it came out and I did not remember any of that information. reading is fundemental.......... Kdubya |

New York City's album by Thom Bell, Soulful Road is a superb album with some tearjerking ballads beautifully sung and also typically arranged by TB. This had: Happiness Is, Got to get you back in my life, Only You. Their first lp was a bit flat with only 4 Bell tracks, including I'm Doing Fine and Quick Fast,in a Hurry. The rest were done by Wes Farrell. Thom started working with the Spinners about six-nine months before NYC so he had already put down the mold with the Spinners through their first album that of course included I'll be around and Could it be I'm falling in love before he came up with I'm Doing Fine Now. NYC vanished after their second album, I guess Chelsea lost interest when singles off the album didn't sell that well. Sad, though, as it's a fine piece of work. As Bobby E was on most TB sessions of the time, I guess he was there for this album too (?). Any memories of what is one of my alltime favorites? |
