You did say a SINGLE instrument?
That doesn't happen as often as you might think and certainly not for very long. Case in point: Shaft, along with the guitar there's that classic hihat part. The same is true for Love Child. My Girl actually has a bass drum in sync with the bass guitar on the eighth notes.

I did find a few hit songs that start with one instrument:
Brickhouse - Drums
Walk This Way - Drums
Minute by Minute - Rhodes E. piano
Watermelon Man ('72 remake) - Beer bottles

Hello again, soulful brothers & sisters!

Hi, friends Bobby "Electronic" and Medusa!

I got the "Here To Create Music" album by Leon Huff and in the last part of the track have a female chorus (I believe by The Jones Girls) that sings "Jiving, Jamming" in a reiterative and monotonous way. But this can't be considered as "lyrics" (perhaps "laconic" lyrics, ?)

My favorites intros with a single instrument (including instrumentals, if I have well understand):

-The guitar by Norman Harris in the start of "SEXY" (MFSB)
-The guitar (by Curtis mayfield?) in the start of "LOVER'S LANE" (Impressions)
-Trumpet in the start of "Music Is My Way Of Life" (Mighty Clouds Of Joy)
-Vibes (by Vincent Montana) starting "Sad Girl" (Intruders)
-Piano (by Leon Huff) starting "Somebody To Love Me" (O'Jays)
-Organ intro (by Leon Huff?) in People's Choice "Mellow Mood"

I'll back again with more intros, friends!
Peace & Soul Food

Don't have it in front of me, but didn't Tina Turner's "Nutbush City Limits" start with a fairly long wa-wa guitar open before the horns came in?
