Not so much a hit but Soul City by Pervis Herder
on Jamie and Soul City by Leon "Fingers" Huff, the flip side instrumental.

Also there was a vocal version of Keem-o- sabe by Len Barry.

I should do one called Keem-o-ther-a-pee.

Didn't Norman Harris do Stevie's "I Wish"...and I also recall an instrumental of Use Ta Be My Girl from MFSB and Shame Shame Shame from Seldon Powell.

What about King Curtis...I seem to recall dancing to I Was Made To Love Her?

That Stylistics track "You're As Right As Rain" is one of my all time favourites....in fact the whole album is truly amazing. Never knew about the instrumental version though.

Hi, Jester,

Bob James got a "trilogy" of correlative albums in the mid-to-late 70's called simply "One", "Two" and "Three". I believe this Stylistic's instrumental cover is in the "One". Is whort to heard, very very mellow.
In fact one of my all time instrumentals fusion faves is a spectacular live version of "People Make The World Go Round" by CTI All-Stars. Flugelhorn and trumpets are incredibles!

I think in two other MFSB's relativy hits of previouly vocal hits: "Touch me In The morning" (originally vocal by Diana Ross) and "Backstabbers" (originally vocal by O'Jays).
Also Salsoul Orchestra's "Getaway" instr. cover of originally vocal by Earth Wind & Fire.

Hello again to all!

What was the first version?

Let's Go Disco - Archie Bell & The Drells (v)
Let's Go Disco - MFSB (i)

I got the "Universal Love" MFSB album, from 1975 and the TSOP album "Dancin' Your Troubles Away" by A, Bell I have had ("fortunatelly", a ex-girlfriend requised-it) and don't remember the year. I believe the single I have "Soul City Walk" belongs to this album and I got also "Let's Groove" and the best track, IMHO, "I Could Have Dance All Night" in four or five compilations.
I'm sorry because I'm a true Philly Sound lover, but I HATE these two vocal-instrumental versions (pardon me Bobby!).

Some few others:

"Knock On Wood" - Eddie Floyd (v)
"Knock On Wood" - Bar-Kays (i)

"Inner City Blues" - Marvin Gaye (v)
"Inner City Blues" - Reuben Wilson (i)

"United" - Intruders (v)
"United" - Music Makers (i)

Hello there everyone ..

When I'm at home I love playing the instrumental and vocal versions of songs back to back, so I think this is a great thread.

How about :-

The "In" Crowd .. DOBIE GRAY (v)
The "In" Crowd .. RAMSEY LEWIS (i)

Or

"To Win Your Heart" .. LAURA LEE (v)
"Festival Time" .. SAN REMO STRINGS (i)
( "Festival Time" reached the Top 40 in the U.K. when finally released in late 1971!! )

Or

"The Bottle" .. JOE BATAAN (i)
"The Bottle" .. GIL SCOT-HERON/BRIAN JACKSON (v)

Vonnie .. I thought AL KENT preceded GLORIA TAYLOR with "You Got to Pay the Price"?

There is an older version of "Love is All Right" by JESSE JAMES on a Goldmine compilation C.D. ( one of the "Allnighter" compilations ) which I believe to be the original version of this song. No doubt Weldon McDougal knows more about this, maybe he will pop in to check this thread.

Manny .. For "Inner City Blues" I would have put

MARVIN GAYE (v)
GROVER WASHINGTON JNR (i)

I didn't know REUBEN WILSON did a version, it sounds worth a listen.

Just about anything that had to do with Norman Whitfield....especially his work with the temptations, "Papa was a rolling Stone" was great. The Masterpiece Album is some of his best work....then there was "War", by Edwin Starr, "Smiling Faces" by Undisputed Truth, just to name a few all music that would have sold without vocals.`

Hello again, Pazant Brothers & Clark Sisters!

Hi, friend Roger,
You have mentioned two ones that i don't know how I have forget, two all-time faves of mine (Joe Bataan and Gil Scott-Heron's "The Bottle"). Recently, I discovered that the sax in Joe Bataan version is by... David Sanborn!!

The one by Reuben Wilson I got in a UK Harmless Records compilation, the Vol. 1 of the "Pulp Fusion" serie (all jazz-funk). I can say is worth to heard.

Some others:
At peace Whith Woman - Jones Girls (v)
Old San Juan - MFSB (i)
(both are the same but with different title)

For The Love Of Money - O'Jays (v)
For The Love Of Money - Defunkt (i)

Would Marvin Gaye's SEXUAL HEALING come into play? The A-side was the vocal and the B-side was the instrumental. He won the Grammy for both.

Mr. Boone....

I couldn't place the Johnny Watson/Larry Williams credit on "Mercy Mercy Mercy". Were they connected in some way with Cannonball Adderly, or conversely, the Buckinghams?

I think the real test is whether the instrumental stands alongside the vocal as it's equal.
I prefer Joe Bataans' version of 'The Bottle' to Gil S H (hope I haven't commited heresy) There is just so much going on in Bataans.
I also prefer the Memphis Horns version of 'Wooly Bully' to the original by Sam the Sham (which I detest)
Others that come to mind, where I like the instrumental and vocal equally.
Soul at sunrise - Juggy Murray / Outcast - Eddie & Ernie.
All for you - Earl Van Dyke / Lucky lucky me - Marvin Gaye or Jimmy Ruffin.
Good time tonight - Bill Dogget / Soul Sisters

Do you remember BtB's jam "Phattenin'" ? That was THE club cut !!

Hello "The Bottle" lovers 1 Wicked and Handsome!! (smile!)

I got the Joe Bataan and the Gil-Scott Heron studio version of "The Bottle". The Brother To Brother one I don't got it but at the disco I worked when i studed, was played hundreds of times. All the three got his partcularitys. I like the sax in Joe's cover (by David Sanborn) and the Lou Rawl's similar voice by Gil and spanish intro "uno, dos, tres, cuatro,...". But have you heard the Gil-Scott - Brian Jackson live version in their "It's Your World" 2 x LP? I think this is the definitive version.

Hey Douglasm,
Larry Williams and Johnny Watson wrote the
lyrics to Cannonball Adderley's instrumental hit
Mercy Mercy Mercy in early 1967 and released their
version
on the Okeh label during the spring. Their names
are credited as writers along with Joe Zawinal
on the 45 single. A few months later, the
Buckinghams would released their version on
Columbia.

Lady M: I would say yes & no. On the one hand, both songs won The Grammy. On the other hand, only the Vocal version charted. I guess that your example is a better choice that most of ours, as most of our choices were either never nominated for a grammy or never charted at all.
