Sybil remade "Dont Make Me Over" and "Walk ON By" in the late 80's. They were both successful singles. They were both dance oriented versions of the original. That being said...they couldn't touch Dionne's versions with with a 10,000 foot pole!! Dionne's "Don't Make Me Over", to me, still stands as one of the greatest vocal performances ever! |

In no particular order: "Walk On By" "Are You There With Another Girl?" "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" "There's Always Something There to Remind Me" "In Between the Heartaches" (pretty certain this was at least a B-side) "The Beginning of Loneliness" (see above comments) "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" "Once You Hit the Road" "I'll Never Love This Way Again" "No Night So Long" and I'll throw in "Then Came You" for good measure. Best, Mark |

hello, soulful folks! I likes Walk On Be, Yesterday, Close To You, Then Came You, etc., but when I heard for the first time his live version of "Can't Hide Love" in the 2 x LP with Isaac Hayes "A Man And A Woman"... What a soul woman I discovered!!!! Some stupids who have the job as musical criticals and says that Dionne Warwick is a "Pop" black vocalist, of course, don't got ears, and of course don't have heard this song. Peace! |

Dionne, Dionne,Dionne!!!! Wow, what a catalogue. My Top 10 favorites by Dionne Warwick are: 1. I'll Never Fall In Love Again - it is not a very long song, but she is as smooth as butter on this one! 2. Don't Make Me Over- Sophisticated soul epitomized. 3. Walk On By- A true American Pop Music Classic 4. The Windows of The World- Very thought provoking song. 5. Theme From The Valley of the Dolls- Can listen to this one everyday. 6. Then Came You (with The Spinners) - Great Memories of Summer of '74 7. Anyone Who Had A Heart- 8. I Say A Little Prayer For You- Still the best version. 9. Message To Michael - What Can I say about this one. Simply the best. 10. No Night So Long / Heartbreaker - Had to list these two together. It was just so hard to cut off my list at 10! LOL Dionne is baddddd!!! LOL |

I might as well say right off the top that most of Dionne's Burt Bacharach produced material does nothing for me. I'm glad that my dislike for most of that stuff didn't stop me from finding some of the excellent R&B/Soul sides that she's recorded throughout her career. She could be just as soulful as anyone when she wanted to. Here are my Top 10 favs by Miss Warwick: 1) DEJA VU (1979) - Slow burning Isaac Hayes funk! A perfect record IMO. I gotta give Barry Manilow his props for producing this gem. This is my all-time favorite recording by her. 2) DON'T EVER TAKE YOUR LOVE AWAY (1978) - More slow burning Isaac Hayes funk. This one's from a year before 'Deja Vu'. It's a shame that Isaac and Dionne didn't work on more recordings together than they did. They were a perfect match. 3) SURE THING (1974) - A little known power ballad by Dionne and one of my favs. Miss Warwick and her backup singers ( I think I can hear Judy Clay and Dee Dee Warwick among them) give a great performance. 4) (I'M) JUST BEING MYSELF (1973) - Elaborate, early 70's H-D-H produced jam from the album of the same name. 5) YOU'RE GONNA NEED ME (1973) - Funky flip side to '(I'm) Just Being Myself'. This one's got a wicked groove. 6) WHAT CAN A MIRACLE DO (1983) - This was the flip to Dionne & Luther Vandross' extremely overblown duet 'How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye' from the album of the same name. This B side is much more enjoyable IMO. Great mellow groove. 7) HEARTBREAKER (1982) - I've always liked this one for some reason. I read an article where Dionne was saying that she's always hated it! LOL. 8) I'LL NEVER LOVE THIS WAY AGAIN (1979) - Dionne could really belt out a tune before the cigarettes got the best of her voice. I do like a few of the Bacharach produced sides. These are my Bacharach favs: 9) WINDOW WISHING (1969) - This one was released in 1969 as the flip to the hit 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling' but it sounds as if it was recorded in the early 60's. It's a cute, dreamy little Pop tune. 10) DON'T MAKE ME OVER (1962) - I have to admit that I prefer Lyn Collins' early 70's remake. LOL. This is good stuff by Dionne though. Honorable mention goes to the following non-single Dionne gems: 'Move Me No Mountain', 'So Amazing' and the whole live duet album that she did with Isaac Hayes. Jester, you hit the nail right on it's head, the lady is PURE CLASS! (Message edited by Rodmann on July 26, 2004) |

Here's one that nobody else has picked up on (unless I missed, sorry) which came out around the time of Make Me Over and Anyone -This Empty Place. Not a huge hit but I just loved that lurching feel to the track and the way her vocal just sits in there all the way.Great singing. |

Good one Mike! I forgot about that one. It would make my list at Nr. 7, knocking Alfie out. I also forgot "You'll Never Get To Heaven I(f You Break My Heart", and "I Smiled Yesterday"! Those were three of my favourites. I'm sure there are a few more I've forgotten, but I can't check my singles or Albums right now, and Dionne's not among the CDs I have here in, Munich. Hey Jimmy. Lyn Collins' version of 'Don't Make Me Over' was produced by James Brown in the early 70's. It's got that mellow early 70's vibe and of course James has Lyn screaming her head off on it. Actually the screaming might be way too much for the average listener but I just love the mellow vibe of the backing track. (Think B.J. Thomas' 'Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head' with more Soul). James recorded several Bacharach tunes. He recorded 'This Boy's/Girl's In Love With You' at least twice. Once on Marva Whitney and also as a duet with himself and Lyn Collins. The Marva Whitney version is fantastic! Dionne did record a version of 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself' in 1966 and even had a hit with it (#20 R&B, #26 Pop). Cissy Houston also recorded it sometime in the 70's. The only version of this song I've ever liked is the one by Isaac Hayes from the duet album he recorded with Dionne in 1977 "A Man And A Woman". |

Tommy Hunt's "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself"on Scepter was the hit version, but I believe Dionne's was recorded earlier (and used as the demo), just as many others of hers were used. She was the main female demo artist for Bachrach-David, as I believe Lou Johnson was for male versions. I'd be curious to know if there are a bunch of Lou Johnson Bachrach-David songs, "in the can". |

tricky, '(I'm) Just Being Myself' is excellent. I'm not sure why more people don't know about it? I love that long intro as well. Dionne did have a very small hit with it in 1973 (#62 R&B). Hopefully the whole H-D-H produced "Just Being Myself" album will be released on cd one day. Jester, all these years I've thought that I was the only one that liked 'Friends Can Be Lovers'! I remember hearing it on one of Dionne's Psychic Friends Network commercials when it first released back in the early 90's. It's such a great tune that it's stuck with me all of these years. The early 90's were all about New Jack Swing. If 'Friend's Can Be Lovers' had been released around the same time as 'That's What Friends Are For' (maybe as a follow-up single) it would've been another huge hit for Dionne! Robb, I'm not familiar with Tommy Hunt's version of 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself' but I do know that Dionne was the only one to ever have a hit with it here in The States (either Pop or R&B). Her version reached #20 R&B and #26 Pop in 1966. Robb, I totally agree with you about Dee Dee. As much as I like Dionne's recordings I LOVE Dee Dee's voice and most of her material. Dee Dee's voice is much bigger and richer IMO. She recorded a lot more straight ahead Soul music than Dionne but she also had a way of making even the most Pop oriented material sound soulful! Even Dionne has said that the real singer in that family is Dee Dee! I hope that Dee Dee will write a book one day or someone will take the time to do an in depth article all about her. I'd love to hear her side of the story and why she didn't make it to the top of the music biz like she should have. |

1. Walk on By--just call me Mr. Obvious, but this is still the definative Dionne performance and Bachrach/David composition for me. Possibly because it's the first one that I remember. 2. Are you There (With Another Girl)--inspirational lyric: "Oom Pa Pa Pity the Girl". Love the slightly psychedelic brass middle bit. 3. Looking With My Eyes--a minor hit fron '65. I guess it was too sophisticated to be a major hit. Sounds great today. 4. Reach Out For Me--something about the song itself. Every version I've ever heard of this is transcendant. 5. Anyone Who Had a Heart--Love the story of how the house band at the Apollo would groan when handed the sheet music for this when Dionne performed there. Possibly the most unusual time signatures for any major hit record. 6. Don't Say I Didn't Tell You So--a B-side that I discovered and fell in love with on Dionne's "From the Vaults" CD on Ichiban. 7. Alfie--one of the 60's great enduring pop melodies and a breathtaking vocal from Dionne. 8. In Between the Heartaches--another wondrous B-side. Revived and given new importance on the Ron Isley/B.B. set. 9. The Windows of the World--Vaguely topical at best but still manages to cause a little misting up. It's more about what you choose to invest into the words than the words themself. 10. Don't Go Breaking My Heart--yup, another B-side. Conclusion: Dionne released her fair share of double A-sided singles. |

Thanks Catdaddy. I'm not a big fan of the song 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself' but the best version I've heard so far is the one by Isaac Hayes on his duet album with Dionne. I didn't care for Dionne's or Cissy Houston's versions at all! If I see the Tommy Hunt version around I'll definitely give it a listen. |

Part of what I love about Dionne is the uniquenss of her voice even tho Dee Dee's is stronger so to speak. She conveys as much to me as others who have more powerful voices. Listening to Dee Dee recently I could hear traces of both Dionne and Whitney in her singing--it's in the genes there! |
