...one of America's cultural treasures, died of a massive coronary. Jacquet came to prominence in 1942 when he played a fabulous tenor sax solo on "Flying Home" with the Hampton band. Jacquet's solo, so melodic and flowing (EVERY tenor player active in the 40s and 50s knew that solo...) also contained elements of the wild, honking tenor style that predominated inR&B for twenty years. Actually, there were a couple of earlier solos on record that were 'rough and ready' but Jacquet's moved from swing to R&B in a seamless flow of choice notes.
His solo is one of the all time great outings, like Pres' "Lester Leaps In" and Hawk's "Body And Soul". His sound and phrasing combined elements of both Hawk and Pres.

There's also an amazing fact revealed in the obit on CNN:

"Jacquet, who defined the jazz style called screeching, was known as much for his trademark pork pie hat as the innovative playing style."

All the years I've listened to his recs, and I never knew he invented "screeching".

Jim he was a marvelous player and I loved his work live, one of my personal favorites was " I'm gonna Blow For You" we have lost another giant, for whatever reason he was one of those sax players that never got his due. I will tell you this much, Jr. Walker was obviously influenced by this mans style, not so much as in sound but approach to the music.

I offer my condolences to the Jacquet family & may God keep him in his rememberance eternally. I'm not a big Jazz guy & though I was very young, Illinois was one of my neighbors in St Albans, Queens. I vaguely remember him as a down to earth person, who acted just like a friendly neighbor. Most stars had that everyday people kind of attitude back in the 60s.

RIP!

Thanks Melodee;
Funny story to that photo. I don't want to impose on this respectful thread but just for you Mel, since you made mention of it. The story goes like this, Jacquet was playing with Tony Bennett at the 'Blue Note' in Greenwich Village and Jimmy was in the audience just as a spectator when Jacquet called him up on stage to do a number. Jimmy tried to decline but Jacquet and the audience insisted. To cut to the chase Jimmy tore the house up and unintentionally stole the show! Tony came over awards and gave Jimmy a big bearhug & kiss!!!LOL!!! Thats when a news reporter shot that pic. of Jimmy & Jacquet!!
It was in the N.Y. newspaper the next day...and the rest as they say is history.
