great story, well done.

I was lucky enough to meet Maurice King a couple of times, he was highly professional and as the story said he was very witty.

I had the pleasure to meet the man, a great musician, and all around fun, warm, deep and suave debonair individual, a cool cat and I'll never forget him. Though I was fortunate. I was too fortunate to listen to all the work the work he's done. Since I logged on to SD.COM, alot of recordings made in Detroit and at Motown that SD'ers post threads about I heard every last one of em already.
RIP Mister King, my god keep you in his grace or revelence.

Hmmmm....good question, dvdmike. He played alto on a 4 Tops LP. He arranged stuff for the Spinners and Gladys Knight, and God knows how much music he arranged for various Motown 'road bands', but how much of the material was recorded I don't know. Maurice didn't keep track of things like that, his favorite thing was the music itself...as his son noted, it was difficult to play and a lot of guys couldn't cut it. He wasn't overly fond of singers, only a few earned his respect...I'd assume Gladys Knight was one of the few.
And thanks to everyone for the positive comments about the article, and to David and Lowell for adding our website to their links section. There is a longer version of this article on detroitmusichistory.com

I know he did the stage arrangment of 'Somewhere' for the Supremes. He was a mightily important man.
